Open to the river, to dissonant music, as a body floats down it. It’s Boris, the Trotskyist train driver.

Gereon uncomfortably rides the U-Bahn surrounded by communists chanting May Day slogans. Cut to a large communist demonstration at the ''Hermannplatz''. Gereon stands among the communist crowd, which confronts a mass of police chanting about worker’s rights. The police ready their weapons as the communists prepare a human chain – Gereon is caught up in the chain, questioned by a communist as to his dedication when he attempts to escape. Gereon sees Bruno looking on. At the last moment, Gereon breaks free, escaping the brutal melee between police and communists just as it begins. Bruno makes fun of him, drawing him off to search the surrounding residences for weapons. They find practically nothing, to Bruno’s annoyance.

Gereon suggests that the communists and their sympathizers prepared for the raids. Meanwhile, fleeing civilians rush past them, claiming they are pursued by police shooting indiscriminately amidst a neighborhood covered in red flags. Gereon and Bruno dodge a Molotov Cocktail and an armored car firing its machine gun indiscriminately, ducking into a doorway. Bruno protects Gereon while Gereon attempts to control [[ShellShockedVeteran his convulsions]]. Two women emerge onto a balcony above them as the armored car continues to fire, calling for a man in an opposite alley. Two men on a balcony above them unveil a red flag – both women are shot by policemen in a truck following the armored car. Gereon, Bruno, and some other men break into the apartment building. [[BloodKnight Bruno relishes the bloodlust]], even as the men above call for help. Gereon holds one of the women as she dies, barely able to control his convulsions.

Gereon rushes down the street for a doctor – Dr. [[MeaningfulName Voelcker]] – while downing a bottle of his medicine. [[PetTheDog Bruno attempts to comfort the dying woman]]. She dies before Voelcker and Gereon arrive. Bruno disparages Gereon for unknowingly bringing the “red doctor” – a communist Reichstag representative from Kreuzburg. [[DirtyCop Bruno covers up the circumstances of the woman’s death]] as Voelcker questions him about them and [[IResembleThatRemark accuses him of a cover-up]].

Charlotte arrives at the police headquarters, and speaks to Doris regarding their shared transcription work. A police bureaucrat happens to bring work to the flock of female work-seekers at the same time, asking for a transcriber for an autopsy. When everyone else fails to volunteer, Charlotte does so.

Alfred Nyssen visits the train yard. The Soviets want to check the freight – evidently searching for the gold. So long as it is held up in customs, the Soviets have a claim to the train. Nyssen confronts the Soviet ambassador – the latter seeks a [[MacGuffin specific car (AB 3221)]]. Neither know which it is.

Meanwhile, [[TheMole Sorokina]] is released from her cell.

Both Nyssen and the Soviets are stymied by the “mysterious” disappearance of the [[ChekhovsGun freight documents]] (courtesy of Boris, which are now in Gereon’s bedroom). When the Soviet ambassador suggests they physically search the wagons, he is scoffed at as the wagons are [[ChekhovsGun filled with dangerous pesticides]]. The Soviet ambassador has the train yard officials bring the train into a shed for closer inspection, as Sorokina looks on. Sorokina [[ChekhovsGun switches the nameplates for AB 3221 and TY 2305]].

Bruno, Gereon, Charlotte, and Voelcker are among those who attend the autopsy of the women killed by the police on May Day. Bruno and Voelcker nearly come to blows, broken up by Gereon. The coroner deliberately pushes out Voelcker before the autopsy takes place. [[PoliticallyIncorrectVillain Bruno expresses casual sexism against Charlotte]] as she enters. The bureaucrat unveils Boris’s corpse, which is noticed by Gereon – the coroner deduces he is Russian due to his [[ValuesDissonance skull shape]]. Gereon [[CallBack recognizes him as the man taken by the Soviet agents from his residence]]. Gereon comments on the state of his hands – the coroner says that they were likely [[FridgeHorror run over by a car]]. Charlotte comments that it was likely not an accident, which gives all of the men great pause. Gereon, in particular, asks her if she thinks the injuries were induced, which she agrees with. The other men [[ValuesDissonance dismiss her, and pressure Charlotte to leave]]. Gereon confirms that the man is Russian, and the bureaucrat in turn has the case closed as an internal dispute between communists. Meanwhile, Charlotte has been listening in briefly. Gereon deduces that Boris was a Trotskyist via his “4” tattoo, for the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_International Fourth International]].

Outside the headquarters, Gereon buys a pack of cigarettes, and meets Charlotte, who is definitely just happening to be there buying cigarettes for “her boss”. Gereon confides in Charlotte, regarding Kardakov. Bruno looks on. They resolve to remain in touch – [[SecretKeeper Charlotte restates her promise to keep]] [[ShellShockedVeteran Gereon’s]] [[FunctionalAddict secret]].

Sorokina returns home, finding [[RebelLeader Kardakov]] completely unexpectedly. Kardakov attempts to kill her, suspecting her as the mole, but Sorokina successfully fends off his suspicions, [[DeceasedFallGuyGambit shoving suspicion off onto the dead Boris]] and proving her “innocence” with her arrest documents. In one shot, the blood around her mouth noticeably resembles [[CrossDresser the mustache she wears as Nikoros]]. Kardakov believes and forgives her – [[TraitorShot Sorokina’s expression as he embraces her is cold and unfeeling]], as she knows what she must now do.

Charlotte attempts to pass the panhandlers on her way to work. She is confronted by one of them who knows her from childhood – Greta Overbeck. They go to lunch. Greta, notably, [[EstablishingCharacterMoment cleans her plate, literally]]. Charlotte [[ChekhovsGun brags]] to Greta [[BlatantLies that she is an official investigator with the police]]. She flees as Bruno enters the restaurant, promising Greta [[TheOldestProfession a job]] at the Moka Efti. Greta desperately grabs up the change Charlotte leaves behind.

Charlotte goes to inquire about actually becoming an official homicide investigator. The woman shrugs her off, claiming that [[ValuesDissonance homicide is a male domain]].

Kardakov and Sorokina wake up the morning after. She “reassures” him.

Gereon and Katelbach are served dinner by Behnke. Katelbach sarcastically sings the praises of the Trotskyists, [[MrExposition explaining the communist infighting to Gereon]] and [[ChekhovsGun revealing that he understands Russian]].

Charlotte and Greta go to the Moka Efti, again with the communists shouting slogans – this time they are broken up by police. Charlotte and Greta try on fancy clothing, and return to the club floor. Charlotte is solicited by a client – who is revealed to be [[OhCrap Bruno Wolter]]. Greta is left helpless on the dance floor, and rejects all solicitors, utterly mortified. [[SexualExtortion Bruno pressures Charlotte into having sex with him via blackmail]], promising her that he can give her a clean official conduct certificate so she can continue working for the police and even advance. Hit turn, he also pressures her into spying on Gereon.

Gereon gives a letter – from Sorokina to Kardakov – to Katelbach for translation, which he does after some reservation. Gereon gets a call from Charlotte, [[TheMole inquiring “completely honestly” after Kardakov]]. Gereon informs her about Sorokina, and arranges a meeting. Charlotte informs Bruno in turn, and very reluctantly, out of desperation, takes Bruno’s money for having sex with him, to a notable musical cue.

A [[MontageOut Montage Out]] ensues. Katelbach informs Behnke of the 200 dead in the May Day crackdown – Behnke expresses doubt as to Gereon’s involvement. Charlotte returns to the dance floor and bar, smoking ashamedly. Greta goes to a Catholic homeless shelter, but is rejected due to a lack of children. Gereon looks at the photograph that is the only thing in the letter addressed to Kardakov.

Sorokina calls the Soviet embassy regarding Kardakov, [[LoveInterestTraitor asleep in her bed]].

Two civilian women standing on a balcony are hit by bullets and seriously injured. Gereon is able to find a female doctor who treats poor people (including Charlotte's mother) and is a member of the KPD.

Later, Gereon and Charlotte, who now writes his reports, go to the morgue to examine the dead body of the Russian engine driver. Charlotte points out that the victim's bruises are uneven and he therefore probably didn't die from natural circumstances. Gereon is furious about her remark and sends her away. He wants to close the case, saying that the man had an argument with other Russians who resolve conflicts this way.
