Finn is led to a friendly civilization and a mysterious crash site by a vision.

* BlatantLies: Zig-zagged. Martin was established very early on as being a self-centered jerk who will manipulate and lie to get his way. In this episode those traits are still evident. Yet when Finn asks Martin about where Finn came from, it's not quite clear what part of the story Martin was fabricating and which parts were true. Martin sounds much more sobering and not as overly cheerful when discussing this topic, and instead of answering Finn's question about his mom, deflects the question entirely instead of lying. It should also be noted that he sounds uncertain about the story he's telling, implying that he can't remember and is therefore unreliable to begin with. The only parts that ''could'' be seen as true would be the part about the boat, which would explain Finn's issues with the ocean, and Martin being called away on a quest, which would explain his being in the Citadel.
** {{Foreshadowing}}: The being that attacked the boat turns up to be real much later in the island miniseries. [[spoiler: Even the bit with the tiger is this since the people chasing him and Finn had a tiger-like creature with them.]]
* TheBusCameBack: Martin's back.
* GodGuise: Martin pretends to be a tree spirit to fool the villagers. Later it turns out the villagers don't really believe it, they just like helping people out.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Martin, whose negligence caused Finn to lose an arm, [[InvokedTrope pretends to have lost his own arm in an accident]] since then so Finn would be less likely to attack him over it. Once he finds out Finn isn't upset about it and got a new arm, Martin thoughtlessly abandons his lie, ignorant of how much of a jackass this makes him look.
* ManipulativeBastard: Martin still's a selfish as ever, using a little village to rebuild his escape pod.
* MeaningfulEcho: In the dream, Finn promises to his baby self that he won't let him go and hesitantly add "That's...true". Later Martin says this after he claims that he always planned to come back for Finn.
* PetTheDog: Martin gets two. First is when he tells Finn how to stop the ship from blowing up, which he was completely apathetic to beforehand, and second is when he offers to bring Finn with him to space, which would be genuine considering the last time he didn't give him so much as a second glance.
* ShoutOut: Martin's story about the boat with animals in a storm sounds like ''Literature/LifeOfPi'', which is also told by an unreliable narrator.
* SlaveRace: The villagers are eager to help anyone out regardless of their own safety, which Martin uses to his advantage.
* UnreliableNarrator: Martin outright admits his recollection about his past and Finn is hazy, to put it generously. He actually says he is guessing about certain parts of the story he is telling Finn.
