!!!Set-Up

[[caption-width-right:350:'''The Fateful Meeting''']]

Index, a member of the Church of Necessary Evil is a girl who is capable of perfectly memorizing anything, and along with her ability to resist the corrupting powers of grimoires was used, or rather, allowed herself to be used as the container of 103,000 volumes of magical texts that were banned by Christendom, by the Anglican Church whose purpose was to neutralize all magic using the books. However, with such power in Index's disposal, the church was wary of her betraying the church and using the grimoires against them. Because of this, the church implanted a magical symbol inside of her mouth, as a shackle for her to restrict her use of the grimoires. The magic instilled in the symbol would kill her if her memories were not erased every year.

The Archbishop of Necessarius – Laura Stuart – lied to her subordinates of the true state of Index, which includes Stiyl Magnus and Kanzaki Kaori who were friends of Index. This forced both Stiyl and Kaori to look like enemies to Index from a Magic Cabal, as so she would not form memories with them as so to not hurt her feelings when they eventually have to erase her memories. This continued on for quite some time, until Index somehow managed to end up in Japan, and easily make her way into Academy City.

!!!The Keeper of Prohibited Books

Kamijou Touma - a level 0 student in Academy City is being chased around by thugs around the city, after provoking them as so he can save them from Misaka Mikoto, a Level 5 esper. However, much to her disappointment, his plan fails as Mikoto has somehow caught up to them and has knocked the thugs out.

[[caption-width-right:350:Touma clashes with #3 Misaka Mikoto]]

Finally wanting to settle their score, Mikoto tests Touma's mettle, despite his protests of being a lowly Level 0, and demonstrates her special attack to Touma – the Railgun. She later attacks him with an electrical attack, however, he is unharmed as he is able to use his ability – Imagine Breaker. Surprised that a Level 0 like him can stop an attack from a Level 5 like her without injury, she continues to attack him using a powerful electric attack that renders 80% of the city without electricity. Touma, however, was able to escape, and returns to his dorm.

At the same time, Index somehow slips through Academy City security to escape the magicians that are chasing her (Stiyl and Kaori). Moving from rooftop-to-rooftop she later slips and lands on the balcony of Kamijou Touma.

Kamiijou Touma wakes up the morning after, in a heat haze after the events of last night with Misaka Mikoto temporarily crippled Academy City's power. After lamenting his misfortune, Touma tries to air out his futon in his balcony. Here, much to his surprise, he meets Index hanging on his balcony rails. She later wakes up and begs him to feed her, he complies and offers her the now-spoiled food (due to the power outage) from his refrigerator, which she accepts readily.

Touma later allows Index into his abode and offers her a small snack as well. Here, she tells him her name is Index, of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum and a member of the Anglican Church. Touma however is completely skeptical about Index, but at least humors her a bit more.

[[caption-width-right:350: Index Librorum Prohibitorum, the keeper of 103,000 grimoires]]

Index later states that she was being chased by magicians, because she holds the 103,000 books or grimoires prohibited by Christiandom. Of couse, Touma is completely disbelieving and confused by this, and explains to Index that supernatural powers such as esper abilities wrought by science, and his power, the Imagine Breaker the power that is inherent is right hand, may exist – a power that Touma claims that his power to deny God's miracles – but certainly not magic. Index belittles Touma because of this, to which Touma demands Index show proof that magic, so that he can destroy it with his right hand, and hence prove that his power is real as well. Not having any mana to use magic, Index suggests that Touma prove his power by destroying her magic robe – the Walking Church. Seeing this as a challenge, Touma obliges and destroys Index's Walking Church. This is much to her irritation, causing Index to bite Touma in response, before repairing the now powerless robe afterwards. After fixing her robe (which has lost its magical powers of defense) Index opts to leave, not wanting Touma to get involved, and with Touma having to go to his remedial lessons, it seems he has to leave Index as well. However, Touma is concerned for Index's safety and allows her to stay in his apartment, now believing that magic actually exists. However, Index insists on leaving.

Before leaving however, Index gives an explanation regarding his Imagine Breaker, that not only does it negate powers, but it also negates God's blessings – his luck and destiny – as well. Which means as long as Touma has his right hand, misfortune will always be before him. Touma continues to persuade Index into saying in his room for her own safety, however, Index states that the magicians can still track her. Hearing all this, Touma asks Index if she thinks he would simply let her go after hearing her story. To which Index replies by asking: "Will you accompany me to the depths of hell?". With that, Index leaves smiling, deciding to go a Anglican Church for sanctuary.

However, Index has apparently left her headdress back in Touma's room.

Touma is later forced to stay in his remedial class with Tsukuyomi Komoe for much longer as punishment, because of this, Touma arrives home much later in the evening.

While going home, Touma once again encounters Misaka Mikoto, who challenges him once again to do battle, which Touma promptly ignores. Out of anger Mikoto discharges electricity and cripples several electronic devices. They later try to run away from the security bots alerted by Mikoto's callous use of her powers.

Touma later returns to his dormitory after dealing with Mikoto. He, however, discovers Index lying in her own pool of blood. Immediately after his discovery, a magician named Stiyl Magnus comes along and explains to him that Index may have returned to Touma's dormitory to retrieve her missing headdress. Touma then realizes that the headdress may have still exuded magical energy and that Index returned to retrieve it since it would put Touma in danger, which makes Touma feel guilty. Looking at an enraged Touma, Stiyl states that he was not the one who hurt Index but Kaori, although she did not intend to injure Index at all since she was wearing her Walking Church, which was somehow destroyed.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/033.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Touma negates Stiyl's magic]]

Touma asks how the magicians act like they were just and still be able to run around and attack a little girl like Index. After allowing Touma to finish his talking Stiyl states that he needs to reclaim Index, the holder of the 103,000 grimoires banned by Christendom. Stiyl explains to Touma that the grimoires are inside Index's head making her like a magic librabry, as she has photographic memory and is able to perfectly memorize anything. However, she has been rendered harmless because she can't use magic especially that from the grimoires. Stiyl says that it his job to protect her because she is defenseless against magicians coming after her. Angered by his words Touma attacks Stiyl, however, he replies by introducing his name and magic name to him – Fortis931. Immediately afterwards Stiyl demonstrates the power of magic to Touma, and then uses fire to attack him.

Presuming that his attack destroyed Touma, Stiyl returns to try and collect Index. However, he soon realizes that Touma survived, which Touma comments that his right hand actually works on magic. Flabbergasted by the strange phenomenon of Touma somehow appearing from the flames unscathed, Stiyl tried to attack Touma again but the result remained the same, as Touma simply slaps away his magic. Seeing that Touma was the one who destroyed Index's Walking Church, Stiyl begins his incantation and summons Innocentius.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0416.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Touma vs. Innocentius]]

Innocentius attacks Touma and predictably it gets dispelled, however, much to Touma's surprise, Innocentius reforms anew and initiates another attack on Touma. Here, Touma realizes that Innocentius is indeed negated by his right hand but it reforms instantaneously as well. However, Index suddenly regains consciousness, and explains to Touma on how runes have allowed Innocentius to reform even after Touma negates it. Touma however, realizes that it isn't Index the little girl he met before, but that of her John's Pen Mode which activated. Regardless, Touma is forced to escape as Stiyl attacks while Touma is preoccupied with Innocentius.

Touma later sees that Stiyl has stuck several runic markings on paper all over a section of the apartment building, however, his discovery is cut short as Innocentius pursues him once again. While escaping, Touma falls from a considerable height, though he manages to land without much harm, and learns that Innocentius' movements are limited by the runes Stiyl placed. Kamijou uses the time to try and find some help, however, he realizes that he is simply making excuses to himself, and that he is actually hesitant to save Index and get dragged into the 'hell' she mentioned previously. Realizing this, Touma decides he does not want to follow her into hell, but to drag her out of it. Now determined to see through his path until the end, Touma formulates a plan to defeat Stiyl and his Innocentius.

Touma purposely sets-off the fire alarm to activate the dormitory's sprinkler system. He shows himself before an amused Stiyl who states that Innocentius cannot be killed with a mere 20th century fire prevention system, and calls out to Innocentius. Touma states that he did not turn on the sprinklers on to douse Innocentius but to make useless the paper of the runes Stiyl pasted all over the building. Stiyl is rather amused by this as well and says that the paper he used will not be torn by mere water. Touma however, corrects Stiyl regarding this and states he wasn't targetting the paper directly, but the ink that Stiyl used to write his runes down. After hearing this, Stiyl begins to cower but is soon relieved as Innocentius returns to attack Touma. However, Innocentius is immediately dispelled by Touma and this time does not reform.

With Innocentius destroyed, Touma begins his charge towards Stiyl to defeat him. Meanwhile, Stiyl tries to conjure up another spell to counter Touma. Stiyl however is too late, as Touma knocks him out with a single punch to the face.

Touma escapes with Index whilst the authorities deal with the fire that has emerged from Touma's apartment building. At the same time, Touma finally destroys the magic in Index's headdress preventing them from being tracked by magicians. However, Index is still critically injured and he cannot use the city's medical coveniences because Index is an outsider. Touma, in desperation asks Index if there are any spells in her grimoires that can heal wounds. However, Index points out the flaw in Touma's plan, stating that espers such as him, cannot use magic.

Hearing this, Touma goes to the only person he trusts that is not an esper, Tsukuyomi Komoe. Here, Komoe is forced to accomadate the queer arrival of Touma and Index. Index's John's Pen Mode awakens once again to prepare for the magical healing ritual, and asks Komoe to help her. Index however, states that Touma should leave as his right hand will interfere with the ritual location and cause the ritual to fail. With this Touma, reluctantly complies with Index's orders and leaves the premises, leaving Index's life in the hands of Komoe.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0510.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Komoe performs a healing ritual for Touma]]

8:30 PM. As soon as Touma leaves, John's Pen Mode Index begins to ask Komoe questions and instructs her on what to do in order to make the healing ritual successful, much to her reluctance and disbelief. Index teaches Komoe a rather complex spell that requires a model to be an exact replica of Komoe's room, as well as to summon an image of angel. Although Komoe fumbles a bit during their performance, they're successful in healing Index of her cut without harm on Komoe and with this, Index announces that she will leave John's Pen Mode and will now enter sleep mode. A tired yet lucid Index says to Komoe on how she is relieved that she is alive, as Touma would not need to shoulder the burden of her death, before falling asleep.

The day after, Touma somehow manages to weasel his way out of explaining his relationship with Index and the unusual situation they were in to Komoe. However, she willingly lets the matter slide herself and does not report Index to the higher-ups, despite her responsibility as a teacher and an adult in the city. After Komoe goes out for a while, Touma takes care of a still-recovering Index. Here, they discuss the secret world of Index, and basic information about the magical organization that Index is in, the Church of Necessary Evil – Necessarius. They continue on about how the 103,000 grimoires came to be inside Index's mind, which is for the sake of analyzing magic as so to defeat the magic that Necessarius is against. Index continues by explaining the dangers that grimoires can wrought, and with Index being a convenient storage for all the grimoires for the world, notes the danger on how a single person could acquire them and distort the world. Touma becomes enraged after hearing this, to which Index apologizes, as she didn't want to be hated by him, however, Touma states that he would not look down on her just because she held the 103,000 grimoires and states that she should have faith in him.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/069.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Stiyl returns with Kaori]]

All the while, Stiyl Magnus and his partner Kanzaki Kaori have found Komoe's apartment and are observing Index vigilantly. Here, they discovered that Touma is neither a magician nor an esper, and conclude that information regarding Touma has been intentionally hidden. Stiyl later notes on how Index is living happily and laments on how they have to tear it apart again, with Kaori referencing how Stiyl was in the same position as Touma is now, in the past.

Stiyl Magnus later takes 3 days (exactly sixty hours) to cover a two kilometer radius with 164,000 rune cards to set up a trap for Touma.

Stiyl and Kaori initiate a trap against Touma, during the night of July the 24th.

Meanwhile, Touma and Index decide to go to a bathhouse together. While going there, Index (who now knows and calls Touma by name) divulges to him on how she believes she arrived in Japan a year ago, and that she has no memories before that, though she retained knowledge regarding magic and the 103,000 grimoires. Hearing this though, shocks and irritates Touma. Seeing Touma angry, makes Index misunderstand and they get into an argument, with Index running away.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0712.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Kaori confronts Touma]]

While on his own, Touma comes upon an area with an oppressive atmosphere, and discovers that he is in a trap – a barrier spell powered by a rune that isolates chosen individuals within a vicinity, by diverting other people's attention elsewhere. Here, a magician named Kanzaki Kaori appears before him. She states she would rather just take Index than fight and potentially kill him, and demonstrates her power to a helpless Touma.

Foolishly, Touma does not yield to her request which forces Kaori to attack him – Nanasen – an attack that uses thin, sharp steel wires that is able to kill someone seven times in an instant. Terribly outclassed, Touma tries to find a way to go around Kaori's attack and discovers that it is not actually magic, but an attack that only seems like an illusion, making his Imagine Breaker utterly useless. With this however, Touma is once again hurt by another attack by Kaori.

Still unyielding with Kaori's request, Touma desperately tries to attack Kaori, however, is constantly struck down by Kaori's attacks. After dealing another blow to Touma, Kaori states that Touma shouldn't have a reason to continue fighting this much for Index, seeing that he is still alive. However, Touma asks Kaori why she hasn't killed him yet. He targets the fact that they are human, and asks them why they're allowing themselves to do something as intolerable as trying to catch Index, who has already lost her memories (due to trauma) because of them, with a power that she could use as a way to protect her.

Touma asks Kaori why they are taking this course of action, to which she replies that she had no choice as Index would die, and states that Index is a precious friend.

Touma discovers that Kanzaki Kaori is a member of Necessarius; a fact that surprises Touma as he never thought that Index's own faction would attack her. During their confrontation, Touma learns that both Stiyl and Kaori are members of Necessarius, and are out to retrieve Index so as to erase her memories again. Kaori explains that Index requires that her memories be erased every year, so she can live because she can perectly memorize anything, preventing her mind from getting rid of the unnecessary memories. She also explains why they presented themselves as enemies to Index; so she would not be hurt again by the knowledge that they are friends when the time comes for her memories to be erased,.

During the entire battle, Touma is unable land a single blow on Kaori, as she is not using magic in her attacks that are injuring him severely. Despite this he perseveres, and delivers a rebuttal towards her actions. He states, that they are just being selfish towards Index, as they did not take into account on what Index would feel if her friends carry on the burden of trying to erase her memories as so that she can live. He goes on to state that regardless of Index losing her memories and forgetting the friendship between them, there is no stopping them in trying to become friends with her again regardless of what they had to do. Touma manages to strike Kaori in the face with a pitifully weak blow, hurting himself more than her, yet Kaori reacts as if she has taken a large blow.

He collapses due to his injuries, and is later carried back by Komoe to her apartment.

Touma wakes up three days later, with a worried Index beside him. Here, he is surprised that he is somehow still alive, though it worries him that his business with magicians is not over. He however, is unable to do anything because of his current condition. Because of this condition however, Index begins taking care of Touma, though poorly.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/086.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Stiyl and Kaori arrive for Index]]

Touma however, realizes that July 27 was the day that the magicians were planning on erasing her memories, and it became obvious that Index's health was deteriorating as well. Predictably, the magicians came to take Index away, and Touma is unable to defend her from them. However, Index steps into the front and tries to protect the powerless Touma on her own, and begs them that she'll do whatever they want in exchange for them not to hurt Touma anymore. Although reluctant, Stiyl and Kaori concede and leave them for a while before the appointed time.

Index is later overcome by sleep and is resting in Komoe's room, Touma however is awake and anxious of the time limit the magicians setup with Index. He is later reminded by Kaori that they are still going through with the plan to erase Index's memories and that she has called beforehand to tell Touma to say farewell to her.It was basically an order for Touma to give up. Touma demands to know why the magicians can't deal with their dilemma with magic, to which Touma discovers there is no magic that can be done with what Index is experiencing, as the Church who is afraid of Index rebelling against them has but up measures against her such as a Collar that shackles her so that a maintenance only the Church can perform must be carried out once a year by erasing her memories.

Irritated with the incompetence and still unyielding, Touma in desperation, asks them if they can use the facilities of the Science side - Academy City, but is denied by them as there is no time, and that they would not allow science to tamper with her. Hearing this, Touma decides to give up on attempting Kaori to change her side in the manner, and brazenly declared that he will save Index on his own. Kaori later states that they'll live him be until midnight when they will begin preparations to erase Index's memories.

With that, Touma is forced to find a way a solution to help Index on his own, however, he is too late with Kaori and Stiyl arriving in Komoe's door, prepared to do their jobs.

With time of the essence, they prepare the ritual in erasing Index's memories again. However, Touma tries to plead to them to give him another chance to use the Science side to save Index. However, Touma's pleading is condemned by Stiyl for recommending them to do a gamble that he though that would help Index.Touma is then challenged by Stiyl to destroy the magic on his cross that would help in brainwashing Index, if he is confident enough with keeping Index alive; although hesitant, Touma decided not to do it, and with helplessness to help Index he falls into despair.

Seeing Touma's despair, Kaori however decided to give Touma 10 minutes alone with Index, much to Stiyl's protests, who is reminded by Kaori on how they were in the same position as Touma now. With this, Touma is left alone with Index again.

With Touma and Index alone, Index temporarily awakens to find a incredibly distraught Touma. She notices the magic formation that they were preparing and quickly tells Touma to depart, however, he calms her down and tells her that it will be all over now as he will definitely save her this time. Buying his lie, Index becomes relieved and falls asleep once again. However, Touma remains vexed that he cannot do anything for Index and even lying to her.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0919.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Komoe provides a crash-course to Touma on human memory]]

While feeling helpless, Touma later becomes suspicious of the explanation and mathematical data of the church on why Index needed her memories erased. Realizing this, he tries to call Komoe again and finally connects, here he calls Komoe and human's memory. She reveals that even if someone was capable of perfectly memorizing anything, it does not imply that the brain would not be able to handle it, as it has several parts that govern certain functions, one of which is memory, she continues on that the human brain can store hundreds of years of memory without problems. Touma, knowing that the church lied tries to find some magical apparatus that is making Index sick, fortifying to himself that he is the hero that will save Index.

After much pondering and searching of using his right hand on Index's body, Touma opts to use his right hand inside Index wherein discovers that there is a magical symbol stuck within the roof of her mouth and decides to dispel it. It works, however, it injures Touma's hand and activates Index's John's Pen's defense mode, and makes Touma the target.

With the destruction of the Collar that shackled Index to the Church, John's Pen's defense mode activate and makes Touma its target. Unable to find the Imagine Breaker in her inside the 103,000 grimoires, John's Pen Mode Index uses St. George's Sanctuary to distort the fabric of spacetime within Komoe's room as a defensive measure against him. Index attacks Touma with a powerful laser-like beam attack called Dragon's Breath, forcing Touma to use his right hand to counter it, however, it could not be negated immediately, as it was similar to Innocentius, continuously regenerating. A perfect a attack against his right hand, which completely preoccupies Touma and began to wear him down.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1017.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Pen Mode Index deems Touma a threat]]

Stiyl and Kaori, discovers the ruckus as well, whereupon they are shocked to find that Index could display let alone perform such a powerful magic. Touma tells the unbelieving magicians while fending off Dragon's Breath that their church was lying to them all the time about Index. All the while, Index switches to another spell to destroy Touma.

Although, hesitatant, Stiyl calls out his magic name to aid Touma against the onslaught of Index's attack. Stiyl states that he needs does not need any ambiguous possibilities as long as he could save her life, then erasing her memories would be a better choice. Touma tells that choosing the still awful alternative to Index having her memories erased is pathetic, Touma demands to know from the magicians if they want to save Index. He continues by saying that the moment where they need no longer to have her memories erased to save her life is now present before them. An ending were everyone is happy, Touma gives them a challenge to save Index. While telling them this, Touma's right hand began to rip apart due to the pressure of Index's attacks, but sill tries to resist.

Before Touma's hand becomes overwhelmed by Index's attack, Kaori calls out her magic name and saves him by using her Nanasen manages to make Index lose her balance, making her fire Dragon's Breath towards the sky, destroying Komoe's roof and destroying an Academy City satellite orbiting space.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/115.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:350:Touma vs. Pen Mode Index]]

This however, creates Feathers of Light fall from above which, Kaori warns them not to touch it or they'll be doomed. Immediately afterwards, Index recovers to start her attack again, which catches Touma completely offguard. However, he is saved by Stiyl who has finally summoned Innocentius to take on the attack by Index's beam. With this, Stiyl gives Touma an opening to strike Index, trusting Touma to save Index. Seeing, Innocentius however, John's Pen Mode Index tries to change its target to Touma again as he is of the highest priority. However, Innocentius continues to protect Touma and absorbs its blows.

Touma charges towards Index, whilst St. George's Sanctuary is still in place, forcing him to take some time to get to Index. While Touma charges towards Index, she once again changes her strategy and successfully reversed-engineered Innocentius and manages to strike a killing blow at it. However, Touma is already within range of Index, and states that if the world is a system created by God and move according to his will, then he'll destroy that illusion first. With that Touma reaches Index, and destroys the illusion placed upon Komoe's room, returning Index back to normal. However, as consequence a Feather of Light touches Touma's head and falls with the girl he has saved and still continuing to protect her body from the feathers. Kamijou Touma symbolically died on that night.

!!!Aftermath

Touma is sent by Kaori and Stiyl to a certain hospital where the Frog-faced doctor works in, where he successfully revives Touma but is unable to restore his memories.

Index is present in the facility as well, where he says that Index perfectly healthy. Here, Heaven Canceller tells her the truth of Touma's condition. Index also reads Stiyl's poorly constructed letter to Touma. The letter states that they were technically ordered to take back Index since the Collar has been removed, however, they are forced to acquiesce to keep the status quo with Index living with Touma, as the truth has been revealed regarding their lying to Stiyl and Kaori, though Stiyl states that they probably just want to monitor her. Stiyl notes that they'll retrieve once they obtain the necessary materials. The letter later harmlessly explodes, a final rude gesture by Stiyl to Touma, though Index gets instead.

[[caption-width-right:350:Index confesses her love for Touma]]

Before visiting Touma's ward, Heaven Canceller warns Index that Touma will not recognize her. Saying that Touma did not have memory loss, but had memory destruction, which in layman terms mean that his memory can never be recovered ever. Even then she steels herself and enter Touma's room. Predictably, Index realizes that Touma has no recollection of various events that occured, as well as his name, in the end, Index is in the verge of crying where she outright confesses to Touma that she loves him.

However, before she could cry in earnest, Touma laughs and tells her that he was joking and that his memories have been restored after using his right hand on his head. This made Index angry, punishing him by biting him several times and leaves. However, the Heaven Canceller, after seeing their shenanigans, asks him if he judged correctly on not telling Index the truth. It is revealed that Touma actually did lose his memories and that the only thing that he seem to deem as fact, is what the doctor told Touma regarding what the magicians told him on what happened to Touma.

Touma tells him that he lied because he did not want Index to cry. He further states that even if his memories are lost from his mind, they will always remain in his heart.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/0217.jpg]]

[[caption-width-right:300:'''The fateful meeting that started it all''']]

Academy City is an independent city located inside Japan, where advanced technology and esper powers are developed. By going through the Power Curriculum, a person has a chance of developing an esper power. Powers are ranked from Level 0 to Level 5; a Level 0 either has no powers or a relatively useless power, while a Level 5 could potentially take on the world's armies and win.

One night, Touma Kamijou sees some bullies trying to sexually harass Mikoto Misaka. Touma provokes the bullies and then runs, leading them on a chase through the city. He stops to catch his breath on a bridge, but Mikoto shows up and says she took care of the bullies already. It turns out that Mikoto is The Ace of Tokiwadai Middle School, the third most powerful Level 5 with control over electromagnetism. Touma knew this and was actually trying to save the bullies' lives, and he complains that he failed. Mikoto clarifies that she's not a killer, so she just fried them with lightning to put them in severe pain. She challenges him to a fight. He refuses, saying he's just a Level 0. She refuses to believe that, citing what she's seen him do in the past. She demonstrates her Railgun attack, where she uses electromagnetism to launch an arcade coin at Mach 3. Depending on the adaptation, Touma either sidesteps the attack or catches it. Mikoto then releases enough electricity to trigger a blackout, but Touma is still unharmed. He quips that she was unlucky.

The next morning, Touma wakes up in his apartment slightly miserable. The blackout meant that his air conditioner didn't work, and the food in his refrigerator spoiled. He also stepped on his ATM card and broke it. He then finds a girl with knee-length, silvery hair wearing a nun's habit hanging from his balcony. She incessantly says she's hungry, so Touma offers her some slightly spoiled food, and to his shock, she gobbles it all up. She thanks him and introduces herself as a nun in training, Index Librorum Prohibitorum. He thinks that name is fake, but she protests and also says her magic name is Dedicatus545 - The Dedicated Lamb Protects The Knowledge Of The Strong.

Touma is baffled by this, so Index explains that she is a magician on the run. Due to her PhotographicMemory, she has memorized 103,000 [[TomeOfEldritchLore grimoires]], and now several magical cabals want to capture her to use the knowledge for their own desires. She entered Academy City during the blackout seeking sanctuary, RoofHopping until she landed on his balcony. Touma scoffs at this, saying that he knows that advanced technology and esper powers are real because they have a scientific basis and structured laws, but magic is just fiction. He asks her to prove that magic exists by performing a spell, but she says she does not have any mana and can't perform magic on her own. Normally, reading a grimoire would cause catastrophic damage to the reader, but since she doesn't have any mana, the texts she read didn't do anything to her.

Index is annoyed that he won't take her word that magic is real, and asks what kind of esper power he has. He explains that ever since he was born, his right hand negates any kind of supernatural activity on contact, including esper powers and acts of {{God}}. However, since Academy City's System Scan could not detect anything from him, he was branded a Level 0, and he decided not to correct them. It is Index's turn to scoff, because of his BlasphemousBoast that he could negate acts of God. She explains that the nun's habit she's wearing is a sacred garment called The Walking Church, which is enchanted to be completely indestructible, except against something sufficiently powerful like the Dragon of St. George, and challenges him to use his right hand on it. Annoyed, Touma touches her on the shoulder. At first, nothing happens and Index mocks him, but then her clothes fall to pieces, leaving her naked. He's shocked and tries to apologize, but she angrily jumps on him and bites him several times.

Index wraps herself in a blanket and tries to repair her outfit, and settles for using several safety pins to hold it together. She thanks Touma for his hospitality and food and says she must be going, for until she reaches an Anglican church, her pursuers will never stop chasing her. He says she's welcome to come back and stay as long as she likes. She asks if he would follow her all the way to Hell, hinting that he would be in danger if she stayed with him. He's disturbed by the question and she leaves. She turns back to say she now believes his claim that his right hand can cancel acts of God, and says that the reason he is so unlucky is because his right hand negates luck itself. As she's walking away, she gets surprised by Academy City's cleaning robots, calling them Agathions ({{Familiar}} spirits). Touma notices she left her hood behind, but when he turns back, she's gone.

Touma goes to remedial class. His best friends Pierce Aogami (this is a nickname that literally means "blue-haired guy with piercings", his real name is never revealed) and Motoharu Tsuchimikado tease him about how their teacher Komoe Tsukuyomi (who looks like a little girl even though she is most likely in her thirties or forties) has a crush on Touma and thus goes easy on him despite his poor grades, and they wish they were in his shoes. Touma is disgusted that they think a girl who looks like a child is hot. During Komoe's lecture, Touma stares out the window and thinks about Index, wondering if she is okay and if he made the right choice in letting her leave. Aogami accuses him of staring at a girl's tennis game happening outside instead of listening to their teacher. Incredibly hurt, Komoe starts to cry. Everybody in class gets pissed at Touma.

After class, Touma grumbles as he walks home. Mikoto runs into him and says she wants to finish their fight from last night. He walks right past her, and she angrily orders him not to ignore her. He comments that she's challenged him to fights so many times in the past and she's never managed to harm him. She counters that he always runs away instead of attacking her, so they need to decide the real winner. She's also offended that despite the many times they've met, he can never remember her name (he nicknames her "Biri Biri", the Japanese onomatopoeia for electricity; "Sparky" in the manga version; "Bug Zapper" in the English dub). She gets so angry that she releases some electricity that damages the surrounding area. Some of Academy City's security robots attempt to apprehend them, so they run.

After losing Mikoto, Touma heads home to find three cleaning robots in front of his door surrounding something. He shoos them away, and is horrified to find Index lying face down with a massive slash wound on her back. A man wearing a black longcoat with a barcode tattoo on his cheek walks up and says he is a magician.

The man says he and his partner were assigned to capture Index. His partner attacked her with a sword, believing that The Walking Church would protect her and intending to knock her out. To their shock, the sword went right through her habit and horribly injured her. Index managed to escape and staggered to Touma's dorm before passing out. Touma realizes that it was his fault that she was injured, because his right hand destroyed The Walking Church. He then becomes enraged and says he won't forgive the man and his partner for hurting her.

[[caption-width-right:270:Touma vs Innocentius.]]

The man introduces himself as Stiyl Magnus, then declares his magic name: Fortis931 - I Prove Why My Name Is The Strongest Here. A magician traditionally only gives his magic name when the situation is serious. In this case, since Touma has seen too much, he can't allow him to live. Stiyl launches a fireball at Touma, but he catches it with his right hand and it instantly goes out. Shocked, Stiyl conjures up a FlamingSword and swings at him, but Touma grabs it with his right hand and it disappears as well. Touma concludes that his right hand works on magic as well as esper powers. Stiyl says he has no idea how Touma did that; Touma has no magic and Stiyl can't think of any esper powers that could do something like that. However, he is far from defeated and summons his trump card, the fire demon Innocentius, a giant made of 3,000 degree flames. The demon lunges at Touma, but he punches it and it disappears... only to reappear after a few seconds. It forms a massive crucifix of flames and swings it down. Touma catches it, but is nearly brought to his knees by Innocentius' massive strength. Innocentius is so hot that the hallway is catching fire and the door handles are melting. Touma is able to tolerate the heat because of his right hand, but the monster and his weapon are not disappearing. Index suddenly starts talking in a machine-like monotone. She is now in John's Pen Mode, where her mind goes on automatic to retrieve her magical knowledge from the grimoires she read. She explains that to summon Innocentius, special runes must be applied to the surroundings, and as long as the runes remain, it can regenerate indefinitely. Stiyl tries to blast Touma in the back with his flames, but he swings Innocentius in the way and uses it as a shield, then jumps over the railing.

Innocentius gives chase, and Touma notices for the first time that the walls are covered with photocopied runes, attached with tape. Touma makes it outside, and the demon can't follow him because the runes are only inside the building. Touma tries his phone, but it doesn't work. He considers running to get help, but realizes it would take too long. He remembers when Index asked him if he would follow her to Hell, and he says he doesn't want to go to Hell for her, so he'll pull her out instead.

Stiyl prepares to grab Index and leave, but the fire sprinklers activate. He gets annoyed and comments that his magical flames are designed to not trigger the heat sensors, so Touma must have pulled the fire alarm. He calls out that it's pointless as Innocentius cannot be harmed with such a measly amount of water. Touma appears and says that's not the point. The runes were on paper, and now they are getting wet. Stiyl protests that copy paper doesn't crumple that quickly when wet, but Touma points out the ink would still run. Innocentius appears and attacks, but Touma backhands it in the face and it disappears. Since the runes are gone, it doesn't come back. Stiyl panics and tries to conjure another fireball, but Touma charges up and knocks him out with a punch to the face.

After retrieving Index's hood from his room, Touma carries the still bleeding Index away before the firefighters and Anti-Skill (Academy City's main police force) arrive (in the anime version, Mikoto and her roommate Kuroko Shirai are among the bystanders wondering what happened). Touma realizes he can't go to the authorities because nobody would believe a story involving magic. Plus, Index is not an Academy City citizen, and they would wonder how she entered the city undetected. He notes that surely her 103,000 grimoires had some healing spells. Index, still in John's Pen Mode, confirms this, but reminds him that she can't perform magic herself. He can't perform the healing spell because his right hand would just negate it. Furthermore, they can't ask an esper for help. She explains that long ago, espers were naturally occurring. Some normal people got jealous and discovered magic to counter them. Over time, this historical knowledge was all but lost and magic was regarded as fiction by most of the world. Because of differences in how esper powers and magic work, if an esper attempts to use magic or vice versa, he will suffer great damage to his body. Touma thinks and asks if a normal person would be able to perform the healing spell if given the proper instructions. When she confirms this, he says that's good because he knows one person who hasn't gone through the Power Curriculum, his teacher Komoe.

[[caption-width-right:270:The angel of healing arrives.]]

Touma carries Index to Komoe's apartment and knocks. The inside is littered with beer cans and cigarette butts, betraying her real age. Komoe is shocked that he's visiting her and briefly tries to hit on him, but he barges in, clears part of the floor, and lays Index down on her stomach. The teacher is horrified by her injuries and asks why he brought her here instead of the hospital. He says there's no time and asks her to follow Index's instructions exactly. Still in John's Pen Mode, Index asks him to leave the room, or else his right hand would interfere with the spell, so he sadly walks out. Index asks what time and date it is, saying it is important. Komoe, still confused but desperate to save her, says it is July 20, 8:30 PM. Index is surprised because she didn't look at a clock, so the teacher explains that her internal clock is accurate to the second. Nonetheless, Index gets up and checks the position of the stars, only to confirm Komoe is correct. She then draws a pentagram on a table with her own blood. Komoe says this whole thing is crazy and she's going to call an ambulance, but Index says she would bleed out before it can arrive. Index asks her to help place items on the table until it becomes a mini replica of the room they are in. Next, she has Komoe join her in chanting. Eventually, when Komoe accidentally nudges the table, the whole room shakes. Index says the spiritual link was successful. Now, Komoe must imagine an angel, which will arrive and heal Index. Index clarifies that it won't be an actual angel, but a replica molded from mana and shaped by Komoe's thoughts. Komoe has trouble at first, but eventually, the angel comes, heals Index, and dissipates.

Index's injuries are healed, but she's still exhausted. She finally gets out of John's Pen Mode and passes out muttering that she's glad she didn't die, or else Touma would have been devastated. Komoe sighs that Touma has attracted yet another girl. She questions Touma about his relationship with Index, and eventually agrees not to report her to the authorities.

The next day, Komoe leaves to go shopping, while Touma tends to Index. Index explains that she was from Necessarius, aka The Church of Necessary Evil, an ancient English organization that strove to use magic as a weapon against itself, referencing how historically, the Church condemned witchcraft. When they learned of her ability, they forced her to read the grimoires in the hopes of using her a weapon, but she eventually escaped. Touma gets angry at their cruelty and misuse of human lives and vows to protect her. He then questions why hardly anybody has heard of magic, given that any normal person can learn it. She explains that the Magic Side is very secretive, hording its knowledge and power.

Meanwhile, Stiyl and his partner Kaori Kanzaki, a Japanese swordswoman, spy on them. Stiyl asks if she found anything on Touma. She replies that according to Academy City's records, Touma is a Level 0, a loser with no future, but that doesn't make any sense given what he can do. Since Index is fully healed, they must have gotten someone to do a healing spell for them. Kaori comments on Stiyl's defeat, and he replies that he's learned from it. He's mass produced his runes on cards now, and laminated them so they can't be destroyed by water. Stiyl sadly comments on how Touma and Index look happy together, and now they will have to take that away. Kaori comments that he used to be in Touma's shoes.

Since Touma's apartment was burned, Komoe allows him and Index to stay in hers for the time being. When he asks Index to tell him a little about herself, she says she has no memories from before one year ago. One year ago, she woke up on the run, knowing only about the 103,000 grimoires and of Necessarius. He gets angry, thinking they must have hurt her and given her amnesia. However, Index misinterprets his attitude and thinks he's angry at her. He tries to explain himself, but she bites him and then leaves to join Komoe at the public bathhouse. He tries to follow her to apologize, but is shocked when he notices there is nobody out in the street, making the area look like a ghost town. Kaori appears and introduces herself.

[[quoteright:270:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/270px-toaru_majutsu_no_index_e04_09m_09s_2057.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:270:Touma vs Kaori.]]

She explains that Stiyl set up some runes in the area that created a people-clearing field, which causes bystanders to subconsciously turn away from the area and be unable to see or hear what happens inside, so nobody can interfere. Touma is slightly struck by her beauty and her outfit: cowboy boots, jeans with the left leg cut off, and a tied off t-shirt that makes it clear she's not wearing any undergarments. The fact that she's Stiyl's partner and she's carrying a two-meter long nodachi gives him pause. In the light novel version, she briefly comments on how the kanji for Touma's name can translate to "The One Who Purifies God And Exorcises The Devil". Kaori says if he will hand Index over to her peacefully, she will spare him. He refuses, so she demonstrates her prowess by swinging her sword and slicing apart a wind turbine in the distance. She says if he doesn't give up, she will reveal her magic name and kill him. He charges, but she halts his advance by swinging her sword once, creating ''seven'' slashes in the asphalt. She calls this attack "Nanasen", and repeats that she does not enjoy killing, but she will if forced to. There is nothing he can do, because she's too fast for him. Touma steels himself and in his head, says he still has a chance if he can catch her sword with his right hand. He charges, and she swings her sword. He screams as his right hand and arm get really bloody, and he realizes he made a mistake. He squints and sees that Kaori has seven razor sharp metal strings around, controlling them like a puppeteer. Kaori confirms that this is how Nanasen actually works. Neither the wires nor the sword are magical, so Touma's right hand could not negate them. He has no chance of winning, so he has no choice but to give up. He refuses, so she kicks him down and rams her sword's scabbard into his gut.

She explains that she and Stiyl are from Necessarius, and that Index was once their best friend. Touma calls bullshit on this, given how she must have been the one who slashed her back open earlier. She retorts that she had no idea The Walking Church no longer functioned, and she deeply regretted it. She says they need to retrieve Index now, or else she will die soon. He asks what she means, so she explains that 85% of her brain is filled up with the 103,000 grimoires, leaving 15% for memories. When her brain is filled to capacity after about a year, a sure thing because of her photographic memory, she must have her memories wiped before she dies from the strain. This has happened year after year, and it breaks Stiyl and Kaori's hearts every time. Her year limit will be up in three days.

Touma asks why they didn't just confront Index and reintroduce themselves, instead of presenting themselves as enemies after her knowledge. Kaori goes berserk and proceeds to beat the shit out of him. She screams that he has no idea what it was like. They did try that a few times, even using pictures, but the fact that she didn't remember them was too much. They had to stay separate from her because they now can't even bear to see her smile. He says that's no excuse and that they didn't even consider Index's feelings. If he was in their shoes, he would have never given up and would have tried to find a way to make her memory erasure unneeded. She swings her scabbard, but he catches it and punches her in the face. However, it has no effect and he passes out from his injuries. She is shaken up by his words. In the anime version, after Stiyl removes the people-clearing field, Mikoto and Kuroko look at the damage to the windmill and road and wonder what happened.

Touma wakes up in Komoe's apartment, heavily bandaged. Index tells him Komoe found him lying in the middle of the road and carried him back, and the two of them had been tending to him. He's been asleep for three days, causing him to panic when he remembers Kaori's warning. Index is miserable because he got hurt for her sake. Suddenly, Stiyl and Kaori appear at the door. Since Komoe doesn't know who they are, everybody plays along that they are all friends until she leaves. Index tells the two that she will go with them if they promise not to hurt Touma, but they say they are not there for that. They tell Touma that the memory-erasure spell can only be performed around midnight, so they will leave them alone until then. They trust that Index won't leave because she won't abandon him. Touma says he will find a way to save Index so she won't have to have her memories erased, and they say he's welcome to try, but if he can't, they will perform the spell, end of discussion.

[[quoteright:270:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/270px-toaru_majutsu_no_index_e05_10m_36s_7001.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:270:Stiyl and Kaori check on Index.]]

Index falls unconscious with a horrible headache. Throughout the day, Touma looks through Komoe's various textbooks for anything involving memory. He also calls several research facilities, but most of them are closed and the others hang up on him, thinking he's a prank caller. He tries to call Komoe, but she's relaxing at the bathhouse. Midnight rolls, and the two magicians return. Touma begs them not to do it, but Stiyl calls him out and points at how much pain Index is in. They have to erase her memories or else she will die. Kaori takes pity on Touma and tells Stiyl that they can wait until 12:15 to do the spell without endangering Index. Touma deserves the chance to say goodbye. Stiyl grudgingly agrees and they step outside. Index briefly wakes up, still worried about the magicians hurting Touma. He promises that they will all make it through this and he will never fail her again. She passes out again.

Touma laments not being able to do anything, but realizes something: if 15% of the brain holds one year of memories, then a person with photographic memory would only live to be about 6 or 7, and that is clearly not the case. Furthermore, where did Stiyl and Kaori get 85% and 15% from? He concludes that Necessarius tricked them, relying on their ignorance on how the brain works. He calls Komoe again and finally reaches her, then asks about photographic memory. She confirms that the human brain has infinite capacity, and a person with a perfect memory will never "overload". In addition, personal memories and knowledge are stored in different areas of the brain, so those numbers have no basis in fact. He thanks her and hangs up. He guesses that Necessarius put a curse on Index that causes her to suffer unless her memories are erased each year, in an effort to stop her from leaving or turning against them.

He touches her on the head with his right hand, but nothing happens. Determined, he starts touching her all over, then worries if he might have to touch her some place inappropriate. He opens her mouth and finds a rune on the back of her throat. He reaches in and touches it... and is blown back by an explosion of power as the rune is destroyed. Index goes into John's Pen Mode and floats in the air, glowing. Stiyl and Kaori enter the room and are shocked to see Index using magic. In her monotone, she says the "collar" has been destroyed and cannot be repaired, so the first order of business is to eliminate the threat that destroyed it. She says Touma's right hand cannot be analyzed, so she will go for sheer power. She fires a magical laser called St. George's Sanctuary. Touma blocks the attack with his right hand, but is nearly blown away, and like Innocentius, the beam is continuous and doesn't instantly disappear. While holding back the beam, Touma tells the other two that obviously, their superiors lied to them: Index can use magic and she was not in any danger of her brain overloading. Touma's strength is almost spent, but Kaori uses her wires to trip Index and knock her on her back, causing the beam to destroy the roof and take out the Academy City satellite Tree Diagram in orbit.

[[quoteright:270:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/270px-toaru_majutsu_no_index_e06_06m_42s_869.jpg]]
[[caption-width-right:270:Touma rushes at John's Pen Mode Index.]]

White feathers start floating down from the hole in the roof. Horrified, Kaori tells the other two that this is the spell Dragon's Breath. If a feather comes in contact, it could be lethal. Index gets up and fires the laser again, but Stiyl quickly throws his rune cards around, summons Innocentius, and uses it as a shield. However, Index analyzes Innocentius and adjusts the laser so it will be vulnerable to it. As the fire demon slowly dissolves, Stiyl yells at Touma that this is their last chance. Touma charges up and touches her on the forehead. She instantly drops out of John's Pen Mode and passes out. Touma cradles her in his arms, relieved. Stiyl and Kaori shout a warning and try to get to him, but it's too late. One of the feathers lands on his head and he falls over, as if he were dead.

Stiyl, Kaori, and Index take Touma to the hospital, where a doctor named Heaven Canceler (who is implied to know about the Magic Side) treats him. Stiyl and Kaori hand the doctor a letter to be passed to Touma when he wakes up, then leave. Index impatiently snatches the letter and reads it. The letter is Stiyl grudgingly thanking Touma for saving Index, and thanking him for letting them know that they were being lied to by their superiors. They are going back to England to confront them, and will leave Index in his care for the time being. The final part says the letter self-destructs shortly after being read. She throws it away and it bursts into pieces.

Heaven Canceler tells her she is free to visit Touma, but warns that based on the brain damage he took, he may have suffered memory loss. She enters his room and is elated to find he is awake, but he asks her who she is. She frantically introduces herself and describes some of their experiences from the past few days, but nothing rings a bell. In tears, she declares her love for him and begs him to remember her. Suddenly, Touma laughs and says she fell for it. As she's stunned, he explains that he did lose his memories, but since it was caused by magic, all he had to do was touch his head with his right hand and they were restored. He also names his strange ability Imagine Breaker. Enraged that he made fun of her, she bites him several times and storms out.

Heaven Canceler walks in and says he could tell Touma was lying. He sadly admits it, but he had to lie because he didn't want her to cry anymore. The doctor apologizes, because brain damage is one of the only things he can't fix, so Touma's memories may be lost forever. Touma says that doesn't matter, and they are still in his heart.

Index, a member of the Church of Necessary Evil is a girl who is capable of perfectly memorizing anything, and along with her ability to resist the corrupting powers of grimoires was used, or rather, allowed herself to be used as the container of 103,000 volumes of magical texts

were banned by Christendom, by the Anglican Church whose purpose was to neutralize all magic using the books.

Academy City is an independent city located inside Japan, where advanced technology and esper powers are developed. By going through being chased around by thugs around the Power Curriculum, a person has a chance of developing an esper power. Powers are ranked city, after provoking them as so he can save them from Level 0 to Level 5; a Level 0 either has no powers or a relatively useless power, while Misaka Mikoto, a Level 5 could potentially take on the world's armies and win.

He explains that ever since he was born, his right hand negates any kind of supernatural activity on contact, including esper powers and acts of {{God}}.
esper. However, since Academy City's System Scan could not detect anything from him, he was branded a Level 0, and he decided not much to correct them. It is Index's turn to scoff, because of her disappointment, his BlasphemousBoast that he could negate acts of God.

He says she's welcome to come back and stay
plan fails as long as she likes.

Mikoto runs into him and says she wants has somehow caught up to finish their fight from last night.

He shoos
them away, and is horrified to find Index lying face down with a massive slash wound on her back. A man wearing a black longcoat with a barcode tattoo on his cheek walks up and says he is a magician.

The man says he and his partner were assigned to capture Index. His partner attacked her with a sword, believing that The Walking Church would protect her and intending to knock her out. To their shock,
has knocked the sword went right through her habit and horribly injured her. Index managed to escape and staggered to Touma's dorm before passing out. Touma realizes that it was his fault that she was injured, because his right hand destroyed The Walking Church. He then becomes enraged and says he won't forgive the man and his partner for hurting her.

Finally wanting to settle their score, Mikoto tests Touma's mettle, despite
his magic name: Fortis931 - I Prove Why My Name Is The Strongest Here. A magician traditionally only gives his magic name when the situation is serious. In this case, since protests of being a lowly Level 0, and demonstrates her special attack to Touma has seen too much, he can't allow – the Railgun. She later attacks him to live. However, an electrical attack, however, he is far from defeated and summons his trump card, the fire demon Innocentius, a giant made of 3,000 degree flames. The demon lunges at Touma, but unharmed as he punches it and it disappears... only to reappear after a few seconds. It forms a massive crucifix of flames and swings it down. Touma catches it, but is nearly brought to his knees by Innocentius' massive strength. Innocentius is so hot that the hallway is catching fire and the door handles are melting. Touma is able to tolerate use his ability – Imagine Breaker. Surprised that a Level 0 like him can stop an attack from a Level 5 like her without injury, she continues to attack him using a powerful electric attack that renders 80% of the heat because of city without electricity. Touma, however, was able to escape, and returns to his right hand, but dorm.

At
the monster and his weapon are not disappearing. same time, Index suddenly starts talking in a machine-like monotone.

Plus, Index is not an

Here, she tells him her name is
Index, still in John's Pen Mode, confirms this, but reminds him that she can't perform magic herself. Because of differences in how esper powers Index Librorum Prohibitorum and magic work, if an esper attempts to use magic or vice versa, he will suffer great damage to his body. a member of the Anglican Church. Touma thinks and asks if however is completely skeptical about Index, but at least humors her a normal person would be able to perform the healing spell if given the proper instructions. When she confirms this, he says that's good because he knows one person who hasn't gone through the Power Curriculum, his teacher Komoe.

Index later states that she was being chased by magicians, because she holds the 103,000 books or grimoires prohibited by Christiandom. Of couse,
Touma carries is completely disbelieving and confused by this, and explains to Index to Komoe's apartment and knocks. The inside is littered with beer cans and cigarette butts, betraying her real age. Komoe is shocked that he's visiting her supernatural powers such as esper abilities wrought by science, and briefly tries his power, the Imagine Breaker the power that is inherent is right hand, may exist – a power that Touma claims that his power to hit on him, deny God's miracles – but he barges in, clears part of the floor, and lays certainly not magic. Index down on belittles Touma because of this, to which Touma demands Index show proof that magic, so that he can destroy it with his right hand, and hence prove that his power is real as well. Not having any mana to use magic, Index suggests that Touma prove his power by destroying her stomach. The teacher is horrified by her injuries magic robe – the Walking Church. Seeing this as a challenge, Touma obliges and asks why he brought her here instead of the hospital. He says there's no time and asks her to follow destroys Index's instructions exactly. Still in John's Pen Mode, Walking Church. This is much to her irritation, causing Index asks him to bite Touma in response, before repairing the now powerless robe afterwards. After fixing her robe (which has lost its magical powers of defense) Index opts to leave, not wanting Touma to get involved, and with Touma having to go to his remedial lessons, it seems he has to leave the room, or else his right hand would interfere with the spell, so he sadly walks out. Index asks what time and date it is, saying it as well. However, Touma is important. Komoe has trouble at first, but eventually, the angel comes, heals Index, and dissipates.

concerned for Index's injuries are healed, but she's still exhausted. She finally gets out of John's Pen Mode safety and passes out muttering allows her to stay in his apartment, now believing that she's glad she didn't die, or else Touma would have been devastated. Komoe sighs magic actually exists. However, Index insists on leaving.

Before leaving however, Index gives an explanation regarding his Imagine Breaker,
that not only does it negate powers, but it also negates God's blessings – his luck and destiny – as well. Which means as long as Touma has attracted yet another girl. She questions his right hand, misfortune will always be before him. Touma about his relationship with Index, and eventually agrees not continues to report her to the authorities.

The next day, Komoe leaves to go shopping, while Touma tends to Index.
persuade Index explains that she was from Necessarius, aka The Church of Necessary Evil, an ancient English organization that strove to use magic as a weapon against itself, referencing how historically, the Church condemned witchcraft. When they learned of into saying in his room for her ability, they forced her to read the grimoires in the hopes of using her a weapon, but she eventually escaped. Touma gets angry at their cruelty and misuse of human lives and vows to protect her. He then questions why hardly anybody has heard of magic, given that any normal person can learn it. She explains own safety, however, Index states that the Magic Side is very secretive, hording its knowledge and power.

Meanwhile, Stiyl and his partner Kaori Kanzaki, a Japanese swordswoman, spy on them. Stiyl
magicians can still track her. Hearing all this, Touma asks Index if she found anything on Touma. She thinks he would simply let her go after hearing her story. To which Index replies that according by asking: "Will you accompany me to Academy City's records, Touma is a Level 0, a loser with no future, but that doesn't make any sense given what he can do. Since the depths of hell?". With that, Index is fully healed, they must have gotten someone leaves smiling, deciding to do go a healing spell Anglican Church for them. Kaori comments on Stiyl's defeat, and he replies that he's learned from it. He's mass produced his runes on cards now, and laminated them so they can't be destroyed by water. Stiyl sadly comments on how Touma and sanctuary.

However,
Index look happy together, and now they will have to take that away. Kaori comments that he used to be has apparently left her headdress back in Touma's shoes.

Immediately after his discovery, a magician named Stiyl Magnus comes along and explains to him that Index may have returned to
Touma's apartment was burned, Komoe allows him dormitory to retrieve her missing headdress. Touma then realizes that the headdress may have still exuded magical energy and that Index returned to stay retrieve it since it would put Touma in hers for danger, which makes Touma feel guilty. Looking at an enraged Touma, Stiyl states that he was not the time being. One year ago, she woke up on the run, knowing only about the 103,000 grimoires and of Necessarius. He gets angry, thinking they must have hurt her and given her amnesia. However, did not intend to injure Index misinterprets his attitude and thinks he's angry at her. He tries to explain himself, but all since she bites him and then leaves to join Komoe at the public bathhouse. He tries to follow was wearing her to apologize, but is shocked when he notices there is nobody out in the street, making the area look like a ghost town. Kaori appears and introduces herself.

She explains that Stiyl set up some runes in the area that created a people-clearing field, which causes bystanders to subconsciously turn away from the area and be unable to see or hear what happens inside, so nobody can interfere. Touma asks
how the kanji for Touma's magicians act like they were just and still be able to run around and attack a little girl like Index. Angered by his words Touma attacks Stiyl, however, he replies by introducing his name can translate and magic name to "The One Who Purifies God And Exorcises The Devil". Kaori says if he will hand Index over to her peacefully, she will spare him. He refuses, so she him – Fortis931. Immediately afterwards Stiyl demonstrates her prowess by swinging her sword and slicing apart a wind turbine in the distance. She says if he doesn't give up, she will reveal her power of magic name to Touma, and kill him. He charges, but she halts his advance by swinging her sword once, creating ''seven'' slashes in the asphalt. She calls this then uses fire to attack "Nanasen", and repeats him.

Presuming
that she does not enjoy killing, but she will if forced to. There is nothing his attack destroyed Touma, Stiyl returns to try and collect Index. However, he can do, because she's too fast for him. soon realizes that Touma steels himself and in his head, says he still has a chance if he can catch her sword with his right hand. He charges, and she swings her sword. He screams as survived, which Touma comments that his right hand and arm get really bloody, and he realizes he made a mistake. He squints and sees that Kaori has seven razor sharp metal strings around, controlling them like a puppeteer. Kaori confirms that this is how Nanasen actually works. Neither works on magic. Flabbergasted by the wires nor strange phenomenon of Touma somehow appearing from the sword are magical, so Touma's right hand could not negate them. He has no chance of winning, so he has no choice but to give up. He refuses, so she kicks him down and rams her sword's scabbard into his gut.

She explains that she and
flames unscathed, Stiyl are from Necessarius, and that Index was once their best friend. tried to attack Touma calls bullshit on this, given how she must have been again but the result remained the same, as Touma simply slaps away his magic. Seeing that Touma was the one who slashed her back open earlier.

He says that's no excuse and that they didn't even consider
destroyed Index's feelings. If he was in their shoes, he would have never given up and would have tried to find a way to make her memory erasure unneeded. She swings her scabbard, but he catches it and punches her in the face. However, it has no effect and he passes out from his injuries. She is shaken up by his words. In the anime version, after Walking Church, Stiyl removes the people-clearing field, Mikoto begins his incantation and Kuroko look at the damage to the windmill and road and wonder what happened.

[[caption-width-right:350:Touma vs. Innocentius]]

Innocentius attacks
Touma and tells Stiyl that they can wait until 12:15 predictably it gets dispelled, however, much to do the spell without endangering Index. Touma deserves the chance to say goodbye. Stiyl grudgingly agrees Touma's surprise, Innocentius reforms anew and they step outside. Index briefly wakes up, still worried about the magicians hurting initiates another attack on Touma. He promises that they will all make it through this and he will never fail her again. She passes out again.

Here, Touma laments not being able to do anything, but realizes something: if 15% of the brain holds one year of memories, then a person with photographic memory would only live to be about 6 or 7, and that Innocentius is clearly not the case.

He touches her on the head with
indeed negated by his right hand, hand but nothing happens. Determined, he starts touching her all over, then worries if he might it reforms instantaneously as well. However, Index suddenly regains consciousness, and explains to Touma on how runes have allowed Innocentius to touch her some place inappropriate. He opens her mouth and finds a rune on reform even after Touma negates it. Touma however, realizes that it isn't Index the back little girl he met before, but that of her throat. He reaches in and touches it... and is blown back by an explosion of power as the rune is destroyed. Index goes into John's Pen Mode which activated.

While escaping, Touma falls from a considerable height, though he manages to land without much harm,
and floats in learns that Innocentius' movements are limited by the air, glowing. runes Stiyl placed. Now determined to see through his path until the end, Touma formulates a plan to defeat Stiyl and Kaori enter his Innocentius.

Touma purposely sets-off
the room and are shocked fire alarm to see Index using magic. In her monotone, she says activate the "collar" has been destroyed and dormitory's sprinkler system. He shows himself before an amused Stiyl who states that Innocentius cannot be repaired, so the first order of business is killed with a mere 20th century fire prevention system, and calls out to eliminate the threat Innocentius. Touma states that destroyed it. She he did not turn on the sprinklers on to douse Innocentius but to make useless the paper of the runes Stiyl pasted all over the building.

Touma escapes with Index whilst the authorities deal with the fire that has emerged from
Touma's right hand apartment building. At the same time, Touma finally destroys the magic in Index's headdress preventing them from being tracked by magicians. However, Index is still critically injured and he cannot be analyzed, so she will go for sheer power. She fires a magical laser called St. George's Sanctuary. Touma blocks use the attack with his right hand, but is nearly blown away, and like Innocentius, the beam is continuous and doesn't instantly disappear. While holding back the beam, Touma tells the other two that obviously, their superiors lied to them: city's medical coveniences because Index is an outsider. Touma, in desperation asks Index if there are any spells in her grimoires that can use magic and she was not heal wounds. However, Index points out the flaw in any danger of her brain overloading. Touma's strength plan, stating that espers such as him, cannot use magic.

Hearing this, Touma goes to the only person he trusts that
is almost spent, but Kaori uses her wires not an esper, Tsukuyomi Komoe. Here, Komoe is forced to trip accomadate the queer arrival of Touma and Index. Index's John's Pen Mode awakens once again to prepare for the magical healing ritual, and asks Komoe to help her. Index however, states that Touma should leave as his right hand will interfere with the ritual location and knock her on her back, causing cause the beam ritual to destroy fail. With this Touma, reluctantly complies with Index's orders and leaves the roof and take out premises, leaving Index's life in the Academy City satellite Tree Diagram in orbit.

[[caption-width-right:270:Touma rushes at [[caption-width-right:350:Stiyl returns with Kaori]]

[[caption-width:350:Kaori confronts Touma]]

[[quoteright:350:http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/086.jpg]]

[[caption-width:350:Komoe provides a crash-course to Touma on human memory]]

Unable to find the Imagine Breaker in her inside the 103,000 grimoires,

White feathers start floating down from
Index uses St. George's Sanctuary to distort the hole in the roof. Horrified, Kaori tells the other two that this is the spell fabric of spacetime within Komoe's room as a defensive measure against him. Index attacks Touma with a powerful laser-like beam attack called Dragon's Breath. If a feather comes in contact, Breath, forcing Touma to use his right hand to counter it, however, it could not be lethal. Index gets up and fires the laser again, but Stiyl quickly throws his rune cards around, summons negated immediately, as it was similar to Innocentius, continuously regenerating. A perfect a attack against his right hand, which completely preoccupies Touma and uses began to wear him down.

This however, creates Feathers of Light fall from above which, Kaori warns them not to touch
it as a shield. or they'll be doomed. Immediately afterwards, Index recovers to start her attack again, which catches Touma completely offguard. However, Index analyzes he is saved by Stiyl who has finally summoned Innocentius and adjusts the laser so it will be vulnerable to it. As the fire demon slowly dissolves, Stiyl yells at Touma that this is their last chance. Touma charges up and touches her take on the forehead. She instantly drops out of attack by Index's beam. With this, Stiyl gives Touma an opening to strike Index, trusting Touma to save Index. Seeing, Innocentius however, John's Pen Mode and passes out. Index tries to change its target to Touma cradles her in his arms, relieved. Stiyl again as he is of the highest priority. However, Innocentius continues to protect Touma and Kaori shout a warning and try absorbs its blows.

Touma charges towards Index, whilst St. George's Sanctuary is still in place, forcing him to take some time
to get to him, but it's too late. One Index. While Touma charges towards Index, she once again changes her strategy and successfully reversed-engineered Innocentius and manages to strike a killing blow at it. However, Touma is already within range of Index, and states that if the feathers lands on world is a system created by God and move according to his will, then he'll destroy that illusion first. With that Touma reaches Index, and destroys the illusion placed upon Komoe's room, returning Index back to normal. However, as consequence a Feather of Light touches Touma's head and he falls over, as if with the girl he were dead.

Stiyl, Kaori,
has saved and Index take still continuing to protect her body from the feathers. Kamijou Touma symbolically died on that night.

!!!Aftermath

Touma is sent by Kaori and Stiyl
to the hospital, a certain hospital where a the Frog-faced doctor named works in, where he successfully revives Touma but is unable to restore his memories.

Index is present in the facility as well, where he says that Index perfectly healthy. Here,
Heaven Canceler (who is implied to know about Canceller tells her the Magic Side) treats him. Stiyl and Kaori hand the doctor a truth of Touma's condition. Index also reads Stiyl's poorly constructed letter to be passed to Touma when he wakes up, then leave. Index impatiently snatches the letter and reads it. Touma. The letter is Stiyl grudgingly thanking Touma for saving Index, and thanking him for letting them know states that they were being lied technically ordered to by take back Index since the Collar has been removed, however, they are forced to acquiesce to keep the status quo with Index living with Touma, as the truth has been revealed regarding their superiors. They are going back lying to England to confront them, Stiyl and will leave Index in his care for Kaori, though Stiyl states that they probably just want to monitor her. Stiyl notes that they'll retrieve once they obtain the time being. necessary materials. The final part says the letter self-destructs shortly after being read. She throws it away and it bursts into pieces.

later harmlessly explodes, a final rude gesture by Stiyl to Touma, though Index gets instead.

Before visiting Touma's ward,
Heaven Canceler tells her she is free to visit Touma, but Canceller warns Index that based on the brain damage he took, he may Touma will not recognize her. Saying that Touma did not have suffered memory loss. She enters loss, but had memory destruction, which in layman terms mean that his room and is elated to find he is awake, but he asks her who memory can never be recovered ever. Even then she is. She frantically introduces steels herself and describes some enter Touma's room. Predictably, Index realizes that Touma has no recollection of their experiences from various events that occured, as well as his name, in the past few days, but nothing rings a bell. In tears, end, Index is in the verge of crying where she declares outright confesses to Touma that she loves him.
