[[OffTheRails until the Sixth Angel, Ramiel, shows up]]. Now it's this morphing, singing monstrosity that ''screams'' inhumanly as it tries to melt EVA-01's face off. Okay, feeling the impact again. Not to mention that, while the officers are discussing a change of tactics, Shinji is continuously screaming in pain because Ramiel's laser is still ''boiling him alive''.
** And the fact that he begs Gendou to rescue him while said 'father' continues giving orders coldly, completely ignores him and is actually the one responsible for this -- almost as if he were torturing him to death. Pretty much the whole Gendou-Shinji relationship ranges between [[NightmareFuel common childhood anxieties about separation and abandonment]] and [[HighOctaneNightmareFuel primal fears coupled with horrifying, twisted child abuse and traumas]], but that scene can put any seasoned Eva fan significantly ill at ease for ''days''.
** Ramiel itself is a very weird combination of Awesome and Nightmare Fuel. Out of all the Angels, you'd probably be most forgiven for thinking Ramiel a machine of some kind. Nothing about it looks organic, and the efficient, methodical approach it takes in dealing with threats just reinforces the idea. Then it gets hit with the Positron Cannon and ''screams'', shifts into a starburst pattern as though flinching from the pain, and pours hundreds of gallons of blood all over the landscape. That's when you realize: this utterly inhuman and otherworldly ''thing'' is actually alive. This makes Ramiel a lot scarier than if it were simply a machine.
* Despite the rest of the movie being LighterAndSofter with a heavy emphasis on CharacterDevelopment, the second Rebuild of Evangelion culminates in a confrontation with Zeruel that results in Rei and Unit 00 [[spoiler: being eaten whole by the angel.]] To top it off, the Angel morphs into something resembling an UncannyValleyGirl and proceeds to tear shit up stark naked. If it weren't for the subsequent CrowningMomentOfAwesome and CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming, the audience would've most likely been driven mad.
** Not to mention that when Shinji [[spoiler:goes to rescue Rei from the core, the angel gunk inside it is basically burning him alive to the point that his skin peels off.]] If it weren't for the [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome mo]][[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming od]] of the scene, that would have been ''a lot'' more disturbing.
* Unit 02's berserker state, seen earlier in the battle, is pretty crazed as well. Watching a HumongousMecha turn into something that resembles Carnage from ''SpiderMan'' (complete with gaping mouth, needle-thin teeth, and lolling tongue) and going medieval on Zeruel much have been quite a startling sight to see on the big screen.
* Unit 03's destruction. The original scene was already fairly gory and many kinds of disturbing, but ''Rebuild'' adds in [[spoiler:Unit 01 ''eviscerating'' it, in all its gorny detail]]. And--rather than being crushed--the entry plug is bitten in half.
** Not to mention that the instant the plug's wall gives in, we hear Asuka's agonized scream (it comes a fraction of a second before Shinji's BigNo and is too high-pitched to be him). I love graphic violence but still... that scream was TearJerker for him. The overall tone of the scene was... there are no words to describe the horror... let's just leave it at that, please...
** It certainly doesn't help that [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-i-1EzKYAI this song]] is playing through the whole scene.
** Adding to that it helps even less when [[spoiler:Asuka just realized that how she has been treating others and herself is ''wrong''.]]
* Remember the robotic sounds as the Dummy System starts up? [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sqEzIHyYPk Well, listen to it playing backwards]], and you'll hear words. ''English words.'' [[spoiler: "Freedom is an illusion. All you lose is the emotion of pride. To be dominated by me is not as bad for humankind as to be dominated by others of your species."]]
** Wow, that really makes the Dummy Plug scene that much creepier. Holy s***.
** This is a quote from ''[[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064177/quotes Colossus: The Forbin Project]]''.
*** Of note: The Dummy Plug System activating now resembles nothing so much within the entry plug as an Angel itself, rising from behind to just bend over and ''stare'' directly into the Pilot's face...
* As in the series, 01 refuses the Dummy Plug, for one brief, fleeting instant, you can hear an almost human, agonized ''scream'' as it's rejected.
* For me, it comes down to this. To quote MotiveRant 'When Shinji almost trashes NERV HQ for an otherwise completely justified reason, Gendo explains why he's such a bastard: he believes that he can [[ItsTheOnlyWay only]] achieve his desires if he's willing to sacrifice everything and use his own strength.' What does Shinji do not much later? He gets Rei back, at any cost, including Third Impact, the only way he could have done this is the way he did. ''This means that Gendo was right.'' For someone who considers that to be the essental meaning behind the single most epic scene in 2.0, that paints a very, very, scary picture of the authors opinion on the matter.
** If one thinks long enough this stops being NightmareFuel and becomes a CrowningMomentOfHeartWarming because at that moment Gendo taught Shinji that if he really wants something he shouldn't rely on other and use his own strength to accomplish his goals. Who defeated Zeruel in the original series- A berserk 01. And who defeated it this time- [[StealthMentor Shinji and only Shinji.]]
* [[spoiler:Zeruel ''eats'' Rei and integrates her Eva and her ''consciousness'' into it. And then its lower half ends up like Giant Naked Rei, ''with a Zeruel top''. '''Augh.''']]
* There are two separate incidents where an Eva pilot's synchro rate goes too high, followed by Ritsuko proclaiming that they need to remove the pilot immediately, because if they remain in that state, they ''"won't be human anymore".''
* The very fact that as of the end of 2.0, everything is still going according to [[MagnificentBastard Gendo's]] [[XanatosRoulette plan]].
* Okay. So [[spoiler:the awakened Unit 01]] at the end of 2.22 might have been [[CrowningMomentOfAwesome the single most epic thing to have ever come out of this franchise]], but at the same time, it was also creepy beyond all comprehension. Like, between that and [[spoiler:Giant Naked Zeruel-Rei]], I was way more scared by the former.
* Kaworu's words at the end of 2.0. Think they sound nice? Look at the expression on his face. Brrr....
* When the 8th Angel (that new eyeball one) was about to fall onto Unit 01, these human-looking things on it's arm sprung up and ''danced''. ** I always thought they were celebrating the imminent destruction of the human race.
*** And that isn't creepy?
** New Angel? Oh, silly. That's Sahaquiel. ''[[EldritchAbomination That]]'' is ''[[TookALevelInBadass Sahaquiel]]''. It speaks volumes for both the Angel redesigns and Rebuild as a whole that an Angel previously thought of as one of the ''weaker'' foes was made genuinely terrifying.
*** To this troper, Sahaquiel's design in itself wasn't that scary... the small things that were shaped like Israfel, however, were a thousand times more horrifying. Especially when they all got that glyph on their stomachs... Oh, the horror.
* How come the Evangelion Simulator in Rebuild isn't mentioned? It's practically a trashed EVA-prototype with only a spine and head, and even then its head is cracked open. The very thing is a monstrosity.
* Shinji's GlowingEyesOfDoom in the second movie, towards the end. They're blood red, and it is truly, unconditionally terrifying.

* The new [[http://wiki.evageeks.org/Bardiel 9th angel]]. Since Toji isn't a pilot in this version, it takes over [[spoiler:Unit-03 and ''Asuka'' instead]]. Add in some horrifying SoundtrackDissonance, {{gorn}}, a lot of strangling, and an even ''more'' AxCrazy Dummy System and you get Unit-01's fight with it.
* The scene featuring Zeruel, and people fleeing into the Geofront Shelter. Not too bad, but for a brief second you hear a child crying. A small but brilliantly effective moment.
* A ''possibly'' fan-specific example. There are [[http://smashmybox.co.uk/index.php?_a=category&cat_id=14 two new versions]] of ''Komm Susser Tod'' out, both of which begin with a OneWomanWail. The Dubstep version is also freaky as hell...and they said that dubstep would never give anyone the heeby-jeebies.
