* The opening cutscene of the game is pretty horrific - the Normandy-1 being attacked by a mysterious enemy ship several times its size, being pretty much ''torn apart'' by the attacker, and then you get to control Shepard as he staggers through the ship, alarms screaming and fires & explosions everywhere, along with exterior shots of the once-proud vessel limping through space while under fire with huge burning holes and missing chunks all over, and ending with one last shot from the enemy dreadnought's cannon ''obliterating'' the ship that we had come to know & love from the first game, blowing it in half and then shattering it into a thousand pieces, leaving Shepard to plummet down to the planet below.

Meanwhile, Kaidan's self-control is probably the only reason Shepard didn't have to delay the ''Normandy's'' departure to fix an EDI shaped hole in the hull.]]

** [[FromBadToWorse It gets even worse]]. Consider the post-mission summary of the Reaper IFF mission. [[spoiler:Cerberus wasn't just planning Sanctuary during the second game. They used Shepard to make it possible.]]
-->Reaper IFF successfully retrieved. Loss of Cerberus team on the Reaper vessel unfortunate but unsurprising. Will use team's health records for comparisons against husks encountered on Reaper for '''possible insight into indoctrination and husk conversion process'''.

* The [[spoiler:VI on Luna instantly putting up barriers in all doorways after trashing the second processor cluster.]] Even more creepy: The binary code it sends just before it dies? It means "HELP!". ''VideoGame/MassEffect2'' reveals that [[spoiler: the VI was actually a sentient Artificial Intelligence. So, you basically killed a sapient being that was just trying to defend itself once the Alliance realised it had become self-aware.]] [[TheTerminator This should sound familiar.]] What's more, in-game information you discover makes you realize that [[spoiler: Cerberus, those goons you're working for, were responsible for hacking the VI and giving it sentience]]. * The encounter with [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKgaYZZ3g5c the most polite krogan in the universe]] can be ''really unsetting and even creepy. It's a [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy krogan]], in a suit that doesn't look like armor, is extremely polite and even refuse your help and hope a confrontation won't be necessary. What makes it creepy beside all of that ? ''"Mr.Thax will make a series of light calls."'' and, when asked what will happend to the person who cheated Thax ''"That will depend on who sincere her apology is and who willing she is to correct her mistake."'', All of this imply that she probably won't get out of this well.

* TwoWords: ''MSV Worthington''. [[spoiler:A drifting, abandoned ship in space housing a brain-dead man by the name of Jacob, on life support systems. Turns out the crew planned on pulling the plug - the only problem being that it did not go that well with Jacob's [[TheForce biotic]], PTSD girlfriend.]] The part where [[spoiler:upon hearing the last entry in the Captain's log, which ended in his bloodcurdling scream, Julia suddenly appears and rabidly attacks you]] made it even more disturbing. And you can search every corner of the entire ship prior to hearing the logs and find nothing, not even a trace of where Julia might be. This means that she must've been hiding very well, [[ParanoiaFuel watching your every move the moment you entered the ship]], and trying to anticipate how much of a threat you were to Jacob before madly rushing in and attempting to kill you.

** Because MostGamersAreMale, the concept of an attractive alien women having her way with people might lose some of its initial impact. But from the genderless Asari perspective, Morinth is a super-powered serial killer/rapist.

* The final battle on the Citadel takes you up the outside of the tower along the elevator shaft that leads to the Council's chambers. No big deal, nothing too staggering, you're fighting enemies you've been dealing with for most of the game...but then you look up. And you see Sovereign. And you realize up close just how ''huge'' this thing really is, as previous cutscenes never really got that point across. And you realize that if it knew where you were on the tower, it could crush you in an instant simply by moving a leg. It all makes you feel very small and very weak despite how much damage you've been doing up to that point.

* The vorcha. Their whole ''kill'em all, KILL'EM ALL,'' '''''KILL'EM ALL!!!!!''''' ChaoticEvil schitck (seriously, they want to kill as many innocents on Omega as possible to help the Collectors). However given that they're perceived as being little more than vermin who barely live to see the age of 20 (hard to kill, immune to mass causes of death...yep, space cockroaches), its not surprising. Besides, the AlwaysChaoticEvil [[PlanetOfHats Hat]] they seem to wear is possibly subverted, as there are references to the existence of vorcha miners and engineers. On top of it all, many of those living on Omega are probably poorly educated and extremely distrustful of other races considering the [[ViceCity cutthroat nature of the world]] which they inhabit.

*** Krogan Battlemaster Vanguard: As soon as you deploy and secure the area, an angry krogan screaming murderous oaths and pumping a shotgun comes into view. You've faced these before, what could they do to a disciplined, experienced squad like yours? Then he melts into blue lightning and flattens your first squadmate, explodes the head of your second with his shotgun, then swings the shotgun with enough force for the omniblade attached to it to bisect your third squadmate, armor and all. Reinforcements show up and pelt him with enough rounds to put down TEN krogan, but he takes most of it with a ridiculously thick biotic barrier and shrugs off the rest on his massive armored form. As he caves in your skull, you realize that he'll never die, and no amount of training, skill and armor can halt the metric ton of enraged berzerker battering his way through Cerberus' best.
