* What Hastur does to a room full of hapless telemarketers when they inadvertently release him from the electronic prison of Crowley's ansaphone. He basically oozes through all the little holes in the earpiece as a stream of maggots, which assemble themselves into a single huge, angry maggot that starts to feast upon the telemarketers in the most disgustingly horrific way. He basically eats them alive, burrowing into their internal organs and stripping the flesh from their bones in a heaving, writhing mass of screaming, dying flesh and maggots. You could almost feel sorry for them [[AcceptableTargets if they weren't telemarketers]].

* The scope of Adam's power. Sure, he's mostly benevolent, but he was unconsciously controlling his entire hometown for ''years.'' Additionally, while his rapid absorption of the New Age and environmentalist literature leads to nice things like rapid reforestation, and funny things like confused aliens popping up, it also leads to a whaling ship being eaten by the kraken (then again, as with the telemarketers mentioned above, it is a [[AcceptableTargets whaling ship]] , so...) .

* Dr. Sable/Famine is quite chilling, and some of his actions wouldn't be out of place in a much darker novel. Selling people weight loss cures that are killing them, marketing artificial food that will make you die of malnutrition (or become obese and then die of malnutrition). If someone had told him there were children starving in Africa, he would have been flattered. Also notable in that unlike War and Pollution, he's apparently not using his supernatural powers to promote his specific social ill; he's simply selling what people are willing to pay for. Made ''even worse'' by the fact that most of what he does is scarily accurate: 'food deserts' in urban areas (places where there aren't any grocery stores, so food is bought mostly at convenience stores) mean that there are whole reams of people getting obese but malnourished from heavily processed, sugary, fatty, non-nutritious food.

* When the baby switcheroo is taking place, we are gently reminded there is a third baby made redundant, the one the Satanic nuns take (originally of the American diplomat). The footnote tells us not to even imagine what fate may await the poor thing. (Fortunately averted by the end - the boy is all right, and even gets the happy life we were proposed to imagine for him.)
