* This short, sweet and to-the-point exchange during the hot tub scene subtly, yet chillingly, reveals that Pete genuinely believes that being a good parents means commanding obedience from your child through scare tactics. It's the one time his abuse isn't comically exaggerated in the slightest, and it's far more disturbing than any of his overt bullying (especially since [[RealismInducedHorror it's a value held by many real abusive fathers]]).

* Goofy almost plummeting to his doom over the waterfall. The fact that Goofy doesn't even do his iconic yell, rather he genuinely screams in terror for his own life, tells you right away that this isn't going to be some {{slapstick}} bit from a classic Goofy short where he [[AmusingInjuries falls to the bottom and gets up a little soaked by otherwise unscathed]] - has Max not saved him just in the nick of time, Goofy would have ''died!''
** Before that, Goofy almost sees his only son, with whom he'd ''just reconciled'', nearly go over the same waterfall to ''his'' doom. His own near-death was nearly a HeroicSacrifice.
* When Goofy performs his SecretTestOfCharacter, Max feels guilty enough that he puts off his decision until the ''very'' last minute. Goofy is not only panicked that his son may be about to prove he's betrayed him, but the fact that he's seriously cutting it close and they may very well crash on the junction. The panicked screams from both of them as they get closer and closer to potentially hitting the center divider and crashing is terrifying.
* Goofy's angry face when at the junction Max chooses the route that goes to LA instead of Idaho; to see ''Goofy'' of all people mad to the point where he doesn't speak and stop the car out of anger as a real parent might in this situation is actually quite unsettling. Indeed, BewareTheNiceOnes.
** The Scholastic Junior Novelization portrays Goofy's thoughts in this mood. His new motivation on how to raise Max is especially dark:
---> Pete was right. Love didn't mean a thing. You had to be tough. Mean. Kids had to be afraid of you.
* Fittingly enough, Max's NightmareSequence of turning into Goofy in mid-love scene with Roxanne is/was terrifying to a lot of young children in the audience. Even though it's {{Played for Laughs}}, it can still give off a genuinely creepy vibe, whether it's the abrupt change in atmosphere or the transformation itself. It also brings MichaelJacksonsThrillerParody to mind.
* Max's creepy principal, Mazur, and his disturbing allusions to the electric chair. And on a deeper level, the notion that this animated world -- the world of ''Mickey, Donald, and Goofy'' -- has capital punishment.
* The movie relies very much on dark humor. During the beginning of the road trip and the musical number the viewer can see among others singing: a prisoner which reminds Goofy of the whole chair thing, a man in a car trunk obviously implied to get the "cement shoes" execution method and a rotting, green Goofy-like corpse in a hearse who turns out to be the soul of the party and does a Prospector dance at the end. Seeing the face of a known cartoon character decaying is more disturbing for many people than adult zombie stuff.
* There's a [[http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/double5zz/f.jpg creepy little girl]] frequently seen at Lester's Possum Park with big intense eyes, stringy pigtails and an unsettling grin with missing baby teeth. Even ''Max'' is freaked out.

** The Scholastic Junior Novelization portrays Goofy's thoughts in this mood. His new motivation on how to raise Max is especially dark:
---> Pete was right. Love didn't mean a thing. You had to be tough. Mean. Kids had to be afraid of you.
* Fittingly enough,
Max's NightmareSequence of turning into Goofy in mid-love [[Film/TheWolfman wolfman]]-style [[PainfulTransformation transformation]] during his openly NightmareSequence, ''especially'' the way the scene abruptly shifts from a tranquil, romantic scene with Roxanne is/was terrifying to a lot something out of young children in a monster movie. While the audience. Even though it's {{Played for Laughs}}, it can still give off a genuinely creepy vibe, whether it's fact that the abrupt change in atmosphere or "creature" he's transforming into is... well, [[NightmareRetardant Goofy]] makes it LightmareFuel, the transformation itself. It also brings MichaelJacksonsThrillerParody gruesomeness of it is a disturbing illustration of how much Max fears the possibility of (figuratively) turning into his father.
* Mazur calling Goofy
to mind.
*
tell him about Max's creepy principal, Mazur, and his disturbing allusions stunt has AdultFear written all over it. At first, Goofy sounds gravely concerned when Mazur says Max is in trouble, most likely assuming he means Max got hurt. Then as Mazur is reading him Max's obviously trumped-up charges, Goofy starts ''hyperventilating'' at the mere thought that the son he loves could or would do such things before getting what can only be called [[ScareEmStraight a scare tactic]] to keep Max in line dropped on him. It perfectly captures the dread that all GoodParents have at the though of being unable to protect their children from even ''themselves.''
-->'''Mazur''': If I were you, Mr. Goof, I'd seriously reevaluate the way you're raising your child ''before he ends up'' '''''in
the electric chair. And on a deeper level, the notion chair!'''''\\

** The implication
that this animated world -- the world of ''Mickey, Donald, and Goofy'' -- WesternAnimation/ClassicDisneyShorts characters has capital punishment.
* The movie relies very much on dark humor.For such a light, feel-good film, it has a surprising amount of BlackComedy. Seeing the face of a known cartoon character decaying is more disturbing for many people than adult For some people, zombie stuff.
Goofy is a ''lot'' scarier than a normal human zombie.
* There's a [[http://i673.photobucket.com/albums/vv94/double5zz/f.jpg creepy little girl]] frequently seen at Lester's Possum Park with big intense eyes, stringy pigtails and an unsettling grin with missing baby teeth. Even ''Max'' is freaked out.out.
* While at a junction, Goofy gives Max a SecretTestOfCharacter by having him read the map and tell him which exit to take, one of which goes to Idaho and the other to LA. Max is so overcome from guilt, not to mention is distracted by Goofy telling him to make a decision the whole time, that he panics and stammers until ''the very last second before the two of them are about to crash into the divider.'' The two of them talking over each other with panic in their voices, their terrified screams when they nearly crash and the way the scene is cut make it ''viscerally'' terrifying.
* Goofy's now-{{memetic|Mutation}} angry face when Max tells him to take the exit to LA. While it's a little funny to see ''that'' character get angry, the tension is uncomfortably real. He doesn't speak for the next mile or so, then pulls over and angrily steps out of the car over to the side of the road like anyone in that situation might. Seeing [[BewareTheNiceOnes Goofy be genuinely upset]] perfectly captures the OhCrap feeling one gets when they've managed to anger the one person they never expected to get angry: it's terrifying because ''you don't know what they're going to do.''
* Goofy almost plummeting to his doom over the waterfall. The fact that Goofy doesn't even do his iconic yell, rather he genuinely screams in terror for his own life, tells you right away that this isn't going to be some {{slapstick}} bit from a classic Goofy short where he [[AmusingInjuries falls to the bottom and gets up a little soaked but otherwise unscathed]] - has Max not saved him just in the nick of time, Goofy would have ''died!''
** Before that, Goofy almost sees his only son, with whom he'd ''just reconciled'', nearly go over the same waterfall to ''his'' doom. His own near-death was nearly a HeroicSacrifice.
