The film features content from the first games all the way up to the most recent, including...
* Toad wears a backpack akin to the one worn by VideoGame/{{Captain Toad|TreasureTracker}}.
* One official poster shows Luigi holding what appears to be a version of the [[VideoGame/LuigisMansion Poltergust]].
* On the poster and in the teaser, Toad has patches on his backpack resembling various locations from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioOdyssey'' such as Tostarena. Also, like in ''Odyssey'', Princess Peach's castle is depicted on a hill high above the Mushroom Kingdom. Another ''Odyssey'' reference is a Crazy Cap store shown briefly in the Kingdom, as seen in a clip from The Game Awards.
* On the poster, an antiques shop is shown peddling some 8-bit relics from the NES games, as well as a Yoshi egg in a case behind the store.
* The penguins Bowser conquers in the teaser have a similar design to the penguins in ''VideoGame/SuperMario64''.
* Much like in the ''VideoGame/PaperMario'' games and ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiSuperstarSaga'', Bowser's Castle is a floating structure that prominently features Bowser's head in the architecture. And like ''VideoGame/PaperMario64'' specifically, the underside of the castle has spiked balls hanging from chains (here they serve as anchors, in contrast to their ambiguous purpose in ''Paper Mario'').
* The scene where Mario enters the Mushroom Kingdom via a warp pipe brings to mind of how Mario and Luigi came to said kingdom in ''WesternAnimation/TheSuperMarioBrosSuperShow''. The trailer's take on the scene seemingly samples the version of the ''Mario'' theme riff heard at the start of the "Plumber's Rap" song instead of directly lifting the music from the original game. Also, [[https://preview.redd.it/aj6e0ugs8s2a1.jpg?width=1567&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=768d3aef2238c17f67d9cc370376a85887163d3b a character poster of Mario]] has the phrase "Plumbing's Our Game" which is lifted directly from the same song.
* Mario's line of "Mushroom Kingdom, here we come!" is pulled straight from the ''ComicBook/SuperMarioAdventures'' comic.
* The structure that Luigi enters at the end of the teaser looks a lot like the end-of-level fortresses in the original ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1'' and the ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros'' games.
* Bowser's design features a simpler color palette bringing him closer to his appearance in the original ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1''.
* At the beginning of the official trailer, Mario and Donkey Kong have a CurbStompBattle, in Donkey Kong's favor, on some scaffolding hugely reminiscent of ''VideoGame/DonkeyKong'', with the Kongs watching finding it hilarious.
** The setup is also reminiscent of ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBros'', especially with the crowd cheering Mario's name, and Mario's failed strike being based on his forward air attack.
* Peach's jumpsuit is her bike-riding suit from the later ''VideoGame/MarioKart'' installments, with the Rainbow Road ''itself'', and several of the more iconic modern karts and bikes, appearing at the end of the official trailer, in a rally hosted and being run by ''the Kong family''.
* A scene from the official trailer has Mario crossing a bridge with Peach and Toad, with Cheep Cheeps jumping over it, much like they did in certain levels in the original ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1''.
* In the Fire Flower field, Peach says "it's a huge universe out there, with a lot of galaxies", bringing to mind ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy''.
* Peach's Fire Flower form was first seen in ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DWorld'' (albeit without the ponytail). If you want to get technical, though, the color palette of that form was borrowed from the original ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1''.
* Mario trains in an obstacle course based on the levels from the 2-D games.
* The shades on the lights in Peach's Castle are based on the sprite for the Fire Flower in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld''
* The warp pipe space looks like it did in the intro cutscene in ''VideoGame/SuperMario3DWorld''. Mario and Luigi are shown tumbling through transparent tubes resembling the clear pipes also from that game. Traditional clear warp pipes also show up in the Mushroom Kingdom.
* Some of the castle decorations resemble the Super Crowns from ''[[VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosU New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe]]''.
* The ''Franchise/DonkeyKong'' franchise gets a surprising amount of representation in the movie, too. Aside from Donkey Kong himself and Cranky Kong, both of whom were confirmed as part of the initial cast announcement, the trailers and posters confirm the presence of Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Funky Kong, Kiddy Kong, Swanky Kong, and even Donkey Kong Junior in the background of several shots.
** The Kong Island, as seen on Peach's map, has a giant statue of an ape head, similar to the DK-head-shaped mountain of [[VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry DK Isles]]. The head as well as the architecture of the Kong arena resembles the temples from ''VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountryReturns''.
* One of the shots of the official trailer shows Mario, Peach, and Toad overlooking tall, conical mountains resembling those from the DeathMountain worlds of the ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBros'' games (the small circular holes especially resemble the mountains from Rock Candy Mines in ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosU'').
* One of Luigi's movie posters has him lighting his face up with a flashlight, similar to how he does so in the cover for ''VideoGame/LuigisMansion3''.
* The strategic map shown, besides bearing a strong resemblance to a World Map from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'', has a pair of islands in the lower right that together resemble a UsefulNotes/Nintendo64 controller.
** One of the islands shown on the map is a desert island, with Egyptian-looking ruins popping out of the landscape. While this could be any of the ShiftingSandLand levels from the games, a likely candidate could be [[VideoGame/SuperMarioLand Sarasaland]].
** The island to the right of the Mushroom Kingdom (likely the Island of the Yoshi), has a lot of colorful rounded hills, resembling Yoshi's Island's depiction in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld2YoshisIsland''.
* In one of the TV commercials, Toad refers to Bowser's domain as "The Darklands". Dark Land is the NES name of the final world where Bowser is located in ''Super Mario Bros. 3''.
* In another TV commerical, Mario asks Toad if this is a dream. It may not be intentional, but it does bring to mind how the events of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros2'' were revealed to be AllJustADream.
* As stated in the teaser trailer Nintendo Direct, Music/BrianTyler's score for the film incorporates Creator/KojiKondo's music from the games.
