This album is home to some major events in The Beach Boys' career. One of its singles, "I Get Around", was their first song to top the US charts and put them up as the American answer to Music/TheBeatles. It, as well as other songs such as "Little Honda", the title track, and "Wendy", would go on to be a staple of the band's concerts. It was also during this album's recording that manager/father figure Murry Wilson would be fired, leaving more artistic freedom for the band. This freedom includes a step back from the surf rock genre which defined their early sound (only one song on the album references surfing) while still keeping a summer vibe for this album.
