* FirstNameBasis: Kafka and Ashiro, which gets the former into immediate trouble when he fails to use honorifics when speaking to her in front of the other recruits. Ashiro noticeably catches herself when she was about to address him by first name as well.

* TheUnsmile: Kafka tries twice to appear friendly to people in his monster form. Unfortunately it's a monster form so his "smiles" are just horrific fanged grins.

Things become even ''more'' complicated when a tiny Kaiju-like parasite shows up in the hospital where the two are recuperating. It announces "I found you!" and promptly climbs down Kafka's throat. Kafka is then turned into a monstrous human-sized Kaiju.

* ChildProdigy: Justified. Kikoru Shinomiya, daughter of a high ranking member of the Japanese military had access to the anti Kaiju gear despite technically being a civilian and so she was able to train at a capacity most civilians could not.

* PowerIncontinence: After his first transformation he destroyed the hospital room he's in because he doesn't know his own strength. When he opens a door he crushes it.
* ShoutOut: The protagonist is named [[Creator/FranzKafka Kafka]], and his transformation is brought about by an [[Literature/TheMetamorphosis insect-like creature while he was still in bed]].
* SuperStrength: Kafka has a particularly terrifying variant that can only be surpassed by the likes of [[Manga/OnePunchMan Saitama.]]

* WeUsedToBeFriends: Kafka and Ashiro were ChildhoodFriends who promised each other to join the Kaiju Corps to avenge their destroyed hometown. However, they drifted apart as Ashiro rose through the ranks while Kafka got stuck on the cleanup crew and repeatedly failed his applications. By the start of the series, they're barely on speaking terms and Ashiro appears dismissive of him.
