Doi is also one due to his CasanovaWannabe tendencies.

[[spoiler: It is later revealed that the equivalent figure for Akira is ''Zangief'', who ends up convincing her that Haruo isn't the bad boy he makes himself out to be.]]

* MagicalRealism: The story has elements of this. Things such as fictional fighting game characters appearing in dire situations to encourage or warn the protagonists may be explained away as merely whimsical imagination on their part [[spoiler: but the haunted arcade with the creepy old owner who turned out to have been an actual ghost was most certainly not imagined, and no explanation is ever given for the incident.]]
* MementoMacguffin: Haruo manages to win a toy ring from an old prize catcher machine inside the Cracked Skull arcade and give it as a parting gift to Akira before she went to the States. [[spoiler: After her subsequent return and defeat at his hands during a [=SSF2=] tournament, they get into a fistfight sparked by a misunderstanding--and it is only stopped when Haruo sees that she had been keeping the same toy ring on her necklace all along.]]
* NightmareFetishist: Perhaps not intentionally on her part, but after Hidaka begins expressing an interest in video games she mentions wanting to play horror titles like ''VideoGame/SweetHome'' or ''Otogirisou''.
* NotSoDifferent: Several examples.
** While Haruo and Akira appear to be worlds apart in terms of prowess and family background, they both tend to gravitate towards video games as a means of escapism.
** Both Haruo and Hidaka are described as being quite unmotivated and lacking ambition, despite the latter initially deriding the former for "being an idiot who only loves video games". [[spoiler: Later on Hidaka herself becomes infatuated with gaming due to her attraction towards Haruo.]]
** In a hilarious example, Haruo's junior high homeroom teacher Reiko tends to warn her students from getting addicted to video games and even confiscates the PC Engine Haruo snuck into his bag for their Kyoto field trip. An Omake reveals that she actually used it to play VideoGame/{{Bomberman}} with the other teachers--and shows just how poor of a sport she is after losing, just like Haruo.

* RescueRomance: Played with. Akira overhears Haruo talking to another gamer about a legendary 10-Yen arcade somewhere in the city, and when the latter gets on his bike she immediately hops on the back. Despite Haruo's protests, he agrees to take her with him out of kindness. It's then shown that she's actually trying to run away from Gouda-sensei's overly strict mentoring, and it's this act of Haruo's that truly begins cement their relationship.

-> ''"The world wavered in 1991...and a bond with that girl began."''

1991: the renaissance of [[UsefulNotes/ArcadeGame arcade gaming]]. 6th grader Haruo Yaguchi, an unpopular boy at school, would rather spend time playing ''VideoGame/StreetFighterII'' at the local arcade than take his daily life seriously, earning him the (self-appointed) moniker "Beastly Fingers Haruo". However, things would take a turn one day when he encounters honor student and [[TheOjou rich girl]] Akira Oono dominating everyone else at his favorite game with Zangief. Having lost to her 7 times in a row and eager to break her 29-win streak, he resorts to underhanded tactics with his own favorite character Guile, an act which earns him a solid right hook from the otherwise quiet and aloof girl--[[LoveAtFirstPunch and ultimately sparks their rocky relationship]] as she brazenly follows him from arcade to arcade after school.

Written and illustrated by Rensuke Oshikiri, ''High Score Girl'' is a ''Main/{{Seinen}}'' slice of life manga that chronicles the OddFriendship between the under-performing delinquent Haruo and LonelyRichKid Akira as they slowly bond through their shared enthusiasm for video games. It was first published in Creator/SquareEnix's ''Big Gangan Monthly'' magazine in 2010 and is still ongoing. It was rumored to have an anime adaptation in 2013, but so far nothing has appeared.

In 2014, Creator/SNKPlaymore attempted to file a lawsuit against the publishers for alleged copyright violation, citing the illegal usage of their trademarked properties in the manga. As a result Square-Enix was forced to temporarily pull out all printed volumes of the manga until a settlement was reached in August of 2015, allowing the manga to be republished under the new title of ''High Score Girl: Continue''.

Not to be confused with ''Manga/HighSchoolGirls''.

!! The manga contains examples of the following tropes:

* TheAce: Oono Akira, full stop. Not only is she an honor student, she's also classically trained in music, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, calligraphy and ''[[TheLastOfTheseIsNotLikeTheOthers mixed martial arts]]'', on top of being ''incredibly'' good at most arcade games.
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: Oono is better than Haruo at almost ''everything''. Later [[spoiler: Hidaka]] also becomes his better at fighting games, much to his chagrin.
* AmbiguouslyGay: Miyao. While it's never explicitly mentioned, he notes at one point that if he were a girl he would have fallen for Haruo himself.
* BerserkButton: Several.
** Don't try to "invade" Haruo's "personal sanctuary" and show him up at fighting games.
** Don't try to cheat Oono at video games. [[spoiler: And for that matter, don't try to steal Haruo away from her, as Hidaka found out.]]
** Never threaten Haruo within earshot of his mother.
** Never mention video games or arcades around Gouda-sensei.
* BestFriend: Miyao is Haruo's closest confidante. He's also perceptive enough to notice that Haruo was in love with Oono and that Hidaka was similarly head over heels in love with Haruo.
* BestHerToBedHer: Done in reverse. [[spoiler: Hidaka feels this way towards Haruo, to the point of training herself to become better at fighting games than he is. She eventually makes a bet with him on the condition that if he wins, he can go after Oono; but if he loses, then he has to date Hidaka instead.]]
* BettyAndVeronica: Hidaka is the Betty, while Oono is Veronica.
* ButtMonkey: Haruo. In the first chapter alone he gets an ''arcade cabinet'' kicked into his midsection and a right hook to the face due to using a cheap playstyle against Oono, and it gets worse from there; even his mother gets in on the act later on by ''suplexing him''. Doi is also one due to his CasanovaWannabe tendencies.
* CasanovaWannabe: Doi, Haruo and Miyao's classmate. He keeps playing up his {{Bishounen}} image in a vain attempt to attract the ladies, but mostly to woo Akira. It doesn't work, naturally.
* ChickMagnet: ''Haruo'', surprisingly enough. Both his mother and Miyao note that his kindhearted nature would be sure to make him a lady-killer in the future; they're both right.
* CovertPervert: Doi really, ''really'' wants to get to fourth base with Akira. Thankfully for her, his plans often get foiled. Haruo's ''mother'' is also shown to be one after she discovers how popular her boy has gotten with the ladies.
* CuteMute: Akira. A possible subversion in that she may not actually be mute, but simply shy; still, she does not have a speaking role in the entire manga. Much of her attempts at communication are done through nodding or shaking her head, her game playing and with [[BreadEggsMilkSquick acts of violence towards Haruo]].
* DefrostingIceQueen: Akira starts off a completely aloof young girl who hardly communicates with others, but meeting Haruo begins to open her up to the outside world little by little.
* DeadAllAlong: [[spoiler: The owner of the Cracked Skull arcade, which is why Haruo got "creepy vibes" from him.]]
* DifficultButAwesome: To cement her skill level, Akira is shown to pick the most difficult characters to play fighting games and beat 'em ups with, particularly grappler characters. She is able to execute Zangief's 360 degree Atomic Buster / Spinning Pile Driver consistently and with little effort, and can 1-coin clear VideoGame/FinalFight with Haggar. She later translates these skills to VideoGame/Darkstalkers when playing as Victor. [[spoiler: It's later shown that she picked these characters because she felt they were unwanted and unloved due to how difficult they were to play as.]]
* DisappearedDad: Haruo's dad is nowhere to be seen in the story.
* ElegantGothicLolita: Futako, an underground pro gamer whom Hidaka meets later in the story.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: A non-villainous example. [[spoiler: After being ignored by Haruo in part due to her ignorance of video games, Hidaka spends a whole TimeSkip practicing games on their family's Neo-Geo [=MVS=] machine and her personal [=PlayStation=] console until she's able to tangle with even high-level professional gamers.[[note]]It's implied that Oono is still leagues above her, though.[[/note]]]]
* HeroicBSOD: When Haruo realizes just how much better [[spoiler: Hidaka]] has become at fighting games than he is, he shuts himself in his house and ponders over merely playing console games from then on.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Haruo may have very little redeeming qualities on top of having a JerkassFacade, but one thing everybody consistently notices about him is his kindness.
* LoserProtagonist: Haruo. He's BookDumb, [[TheSlacker incredibly lazy]] when it comes to schoolwork, isn't physically attractive whatsoever and has no ambitions in life apart from video games. [[CharacterDevelopment Meeting Oono slowly breaks him out of this mold]].
* LoveTriangle: Haruo and Oono clearly like each other, while Hidaka has eyes only for Haruo, which he realizes late in the story.
* MadeOfIron: Haruo lampshades it concerning himself:
-->''"I'm not smart, I'm not the best at gaming and I can't win fights, but I do have one thing going for me: I can take a hit."''
* MamaBear: She may be goofy at times, but don't ever dare call Haruo a burden in front of Mrs. Yaguchi.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Haruo's mom may be strict when it comes to his grades, but at least she encourages her son to love his video game hobbies, noting that it would be hard for him to excel in anything else if he can't even do one thing right. [[spoiler: Also, Oono's chauffeur and personal butler, who recognizes her need to cut loose after witnessing just how harsh Moemi-sensei can be.]]
* TheRival: Haruo to Akira over video games, [[LoveTriangle Akira and Hidaka over Haruo]].
* SadistTeacher: Gouda Moemi, towards Akira. [[spoiler: It is later revealed that she became this after Oono's elder sister chose to be a delinquent]].
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: [[spoiler: Oono's elder sister decides to [[AbdicateTheThrone opt out of becoming the Oono Zaibatsu's next heir]] when she realizes just how much of a burden it would be, which in turn causes Moemi-sensei to become harsher towards Akira.]]
* ShoutOut: Too many to count; [[JustifiedTrope justified]] due to how they are used as {{Framing Device}}s.
%%Will edit this later because there really is too many to count!
* ShownTheirWork: Rensuke Oshikiri is very passionate about video games, and it ''shows''. * SoreLoser: ''Haruo''. The kid can't take defeat in fighting games so easily.
* SpareToTheThrone: It turns out that [[spoiler: Akira]] is this.
* TimeSkip: Several are used throughout the story. [[spoiler: the first one happens after Akira leaves for the States and is used to introduce [[TheRival Hidaka]]; the second happens after Haruo fails to enter the same school Akira was going to study in after returning to Japan.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: [[spoiler: Hidaka]] became much, ''much'' better at fighting games after the TimeSkip, to the point where [[spoiler: she]] could consistently beat Haruo in both ''Darkstalkers'' and ''Samurai Shodown II''. On a different scale, Haruo begins to take both his studies and gaming more seriously [[spoiler: after Akira's butler implores him to rescue her from her fate as a zaibatsu heir.]]
* TrainingFromHell: Gouda Moemi, the Oono family's private tutor, submitted Akira to this at a young age in order to prepare her as the future heir of the Oono Zaibatsu.
* TryingToCatchMeFightingDirty: Haruo isn't above doing this when his immediate loss in a fighting game becomes apparent. His tricks range from using turtling methods and tick throwing with Guile to distracting [[spoiler: Hidaka]] with a dirty joke while playing ''Samurai Shodown II''.
* UnskilledButStrong: A variation. Hidaka had never bothered to play fighting games before in her entire life, but when she picked up the joystick she could execute difficult super moves and even [[VideoGame/MortalKombat fatalities]] despite never having played the games in question before. [[spoiler: She takes advantage of this fact and trains hard to try and win Haruo's affection, and the results show after the timeskip.]]
* VideoArcade: The whole premise (and main setting) of the story!
* WellExcuseMePrincess: Haruo and Akira's friendship isn't exactly smooth sailing, made more complicated by the fact that Akira finds it hard to communicate apart from video games or physical violence.
* WhyDidItHaveToBeSnakes: ''Akira'', of all people, is ''afraid of ghosts''. She doesn't like horror games like ''VideoGame/{{Splatterhouse}}'', and when they saw just how creepy the Cracked Skull arcade really was, she pinched Haruo so tightly by accident while trying to cling to his sleeve. [[spoiler: When they discovered that the arcade in question had actually been shut down a long time ago and that the owner whom they had been talking to was DeadAllAlong, she started beating Haruo with her fists out of sheer terror!]]
* YouAreGrounded: Haruo's mom locks up his [=PC=] Engine console after seeing his report card. [[spoiler: Even more seriously, Gouda-sensei forbids Akira from being around arcades later in the story and replaces her old butler with a more strict bodyguard to make sure she never tries anything funny.]]
