* KnightAndSamurai: Harlock and Tochiro Ooyama, particularly their Arcadia of My Youth versions. Harlock is descended from European (specifically, German) nobility, while his Best Friend Tochiro is a descendant of the Japanese samurai -- their respective progenitors actually meet by chance in a World War II flashback in Arcadia, fighting for the Third Reich and the Imperial Japan, respectively. While Harlock is a pretty straightforward Knight Errant archetype, albeit forced to live as a piratical Outlaw by circumstances, Tochiro is commonly interpreted as Leiji Matsumoto's attempt to reimagine the samurai without the jingoistic militarism that ultimately destroyed their class: instead of wielding weapons himself, Tochiro is The Engineer who wields technology to solve problems and to empower those he deems worthy.

* VagueAge: Harlock clearly has a reputation that was many years in the making. But how old was he when he started his career? Presumably he would have spent many years learning the ropes before he got to be TheCaptain. In ''Endless Odyssey'', his old adventures are spoken of as if they were many years ago, yet he looks no different. And one character muses that "He must be dead by now". In most of his appearances, Harlock does not act particularly young. Some quasi-cannonical promotional materials have given Harlock's age as about 28 which makes little sense for a man who speaks so much about "finding a place to die". Though in the movie version of ''Galaxy Express 999'' his wanted poster stages that he's 40.

[[VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsT Super Robot Wars T]] states Maya was his wife, but given the alternative universe nature of the series, this may not apply to the movie proper.

** Late in ''Cosmo Warrior Zero'', Captain Zero is forced to navigate his ship, the Karyu, across the "Iron Ridge" nebula [[spoiler:in order to battle the BigBad alongside Harlock]]. Not only does the Iron Ridge prevent warping across itself, the magnetic storms force the Machine People in the crew to be shut down -- including the ship's doctor.

** Mayu may count if Emeraldas is a La Maetelian in the '78 series instead of human - which would make her half-alien. She has very noticeable purple hair when all other human characters are depicted with natural hair colors.
