The main story is told in two parts; the first half tells of the rape and torture of the main character, sixteen-year-old Jeremy Butler, by his stepfather Greg Roland, after the remarriage of his mother in the first few chapters of the first book. Jeremy and his mother are swept off to England from Boston when the story begins. The second half of the story is the aftermath after Jeremy finally snaps and kills Greg by tampering with his car, inadvertently also killing his mother in the process. In addition to following Jeremy's healing process, the story also takes a turn to follow the relationship between Jeremy and his step-brother Ian Roland, who is caught in between falling in love with Jeremy and trying to make sense of what happened to his step-brother at the hands of his father.
