** Then there's Candace. OncePerEpisode she'll have solid proof of her brothers' schemes (which actually shares fun and joy to the neighborhood more than it harms), only to find that it's vanished or ruined when she shows her mother. Other times, any special moment with Jeremy will be interrupted by something (possibly just by Candace herself), and any attempt to impress him will backfire in a humiliating fashion.
*** Then again, Jeremy seems to be as mellow and kind to Candace when she's disheveled with branches in her hair as any other time. Candace ''fears'' being humiliated in front of him, but he's so much of a legitimately NiceGuy that it may be impossible. You could say Jeremy is the personification of ThrowTheDogABone.

* Paraguay. When they thought that it would be a South American powerhouse, their president decided to make a suicide attack against Brazil, and estimulated civil wars in Argentina and Uruguay at the same time. The Alliance totally destroyed the potential of Paraguay becoming a powerful country.
* After four, terrible years and thirteen millions of people dead, they called UsefulNotes/WorldWarI the "War to End All Wars," meaning that after this kind of war humanity would finally throw away their warlike nature and world peace now would come and expand. [[FromBadToWorse If they only knew]]...
** They also wanted to see the end of death and misery. Well, the Spanish flu and the Great Depression got in the way of that...
** Speaking of WWI--Mustard gas. It might splash undetected as a liquid onto a soldier's skin or clothes and then when they went down into the trenches where it was warmer the liquid would heat up into a corrosive gas. So just when you think you're safe, you've escaped the fighting with your life you discover you and all your buddies are gonna die...
* UsefulNotes/{{Ireland}}. After [[UsefulNotes/TheIrishQuestion centuries of being oppressed]] and having its language destroyed, they fought a successful [[UsefulNotes/TheIrishRevolution war of independence]] and it looked like all of Ireland was at last going to be free, only for it to be partitioned into two with [[UsefulNotes/NorthernIreland part of Ireland]] remaining under British rule, which lead to [[UsefulNotes/TheTroubles another war]]. While Ireland was not officially involved, it was forced afterwards to renounce its claims on the six counties. Later Ireland experienced a massive economic boom, leading to them become one of the most developed countries in the world. Then when the recession hit, they became the most indebted country per capita in the world.

** The Chicago Cubs have gone through this for a while. They went through a championship drought for ''[[OneHundredAndEight 108 years]]'', until [[ThrowTheDogABone they finally won in 2016 against the Cleveland Indians]]. Most infamously, a fan named Steve Bartman's accidental deflection of a ball he was trying to catch was blamed for the team's playoff loss in 2003, sending the beleaguered fanbase into paroxysms of rage.
*** In 1969, they went into September with a five-game lead in their division, only to fall into a losing streak at the very moment the rival New York Mets got hot. By the time the season ended a month later, the Mets had clinched the division and finished eight games ahead of Chicago.
*** In 1984, they won 96 games and clinched the division, then won the first two games of the NLCS at home... only to drop the next three games in San Diego and send the Padres to the World Series instead.
*** In 2008 (the 100th anniversary of their last World Series championship), they won 97 games and were heavily favored to beat the Dodgers in the NLDS, especially with the first two games of the best-of-five series being played in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field. The Dodgers wound up sweeping them.
*** As of 2015, it is the longest pro sports championship drought in all of North America and the third longest in the entire world. And they're in the playoffs again. [[TemptingFate This time it's gonna happen...]] To add further insult to injury, they got eliminated on October 21, 2015, the very date ''Film/BackToTheFuturePartII'' humorously predicted that they'd sweep the World Series.
** The Boston Red Sox were one out (and then one ''strike'') away from winning Game 6 of the 1986 World Series and capturing their first championship since 1918. But several at-bats and [[NeverLiveItDown/{{Sports}} one Bill Buckner error later]], they'd lost the game...and the following night they lost Game 7, ensuring their drought would continue for another 18 years.
** In 2011, it looked like the Pittsburgh Pirates were finally ready to snap an 18-year streak of losing seasons. But a bad call caused them to lose in extra innings in a crucial July game against the Braves and the wheels fell off from there. The following season, they were 16 games over .500 at one point but a stretch of games against the rival Milwaukee Brewers caused them to have another losing season. In 2013, they finally broke their then-20-season-long streak of seasons with a losing record, made the NLDS, and even took a 2-games-to-1 lead in the best-of-five series with the Cardinals, with game 4 at home...only to lose the next 2 games and get knocked out of the playoffs. In 2014 they lost to the Giants in the NL Wild Card game, again at home.
** In the 2011 Season, the Texas Rangers were so close to winning their first World Series. They'd made the Series the previous year, but they lost in 5 games. This time, they led the series 3-2 going into game 6 against the Cardinals. The Rangers were one strike away from winning it all...only for David Freese to tie the game with a two-run double, which would lead to extra innings. In the top of the 10th inning, the Rangers took another two run lead, off a Josh Hamiliton home run, making it 9-7. In the bottom of the 10th, the score was 9-8, but the Rangers had the Cardinals down to their last strike AGAIN...only for Lance Berkman to single to center field to tie the game again. And then, to end it all, David Freese hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 11th, for a 10-9 Cardinals win, which would eventually lead to the Cardinals winning the World Series in the next game.
** Until 2014, the Kansas City Royals had not made it to the postseason since their World Series victory in 1985. When they finally broke the drought, they proceeded to advance all the way to the World Series (winning all their postseason games along the way), and taking the Giants all the way to the seventh game... which they proceeded to lose, at ''home''.
*** Even more telling when you look at the details of Game 7. The Royals got an early 2 run lead over the Giants and looked like they were going to score a lot more, until a shocking clutch double play by Joe Panik completely knocked the wind out of the Royals' sails. The Giants slowly take a 3 to 2 lead, before bringing in their postseason ace Madison Bumgarner to shut the door. And Bumgarner only had a couple days rest from pitching Game 5 as a starter...[[YouFightLikeACow a COMPLETE Game, at that]].
** The Kansas City Royals found out what it's like to be on the positive end of chain. They made it back to the World Series in 2015 - this time against the New York Mets. In 3 of the 5 games played, the Mets had the lead going into the late innings, only for the Royals to comeback and win the game, two of them won in extra innings.
* In the NHL, the Toronto Maple Leafs are notorious for once being a formidable team unable to win the cup since ''1967'', and the last two (yes, only two) times they've made the playoffs ('04 and '13), ''they get locked out in the '''first round'''''. And like their loss in 2004, they lose in overtime, but in the case of 2013 it was during Game 7 that they nearly won... had their opponents not deliberately exploited their [[FatalFlaw weakness]]: panicking when under a state of duress near the end of the game.
** The Maple Leafs held a 3-2 series lead over the Los Angeles Kings in the 1993 Conference Finals, and were one [[SuddenDeath overtime goal]] away from facing their rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, for the Stanley Cup. During the overtime, after taking a shot on goal, Wayne Gretzky's stick caught Doug Gilmour in the face. Referee Kerry Fraser did not call a high-sticking penalty on Gretzky, drawing the ire of the Leafs and their fans, and Gretzky would not only go on to score the game-winner, but score three goals to clinch the series for the Kings in the deciding game in Toronto. Defenders of Gretzky will note that Gilmour skated into the stick with the blade at ice level, forcing Gretzky to raise it to avoid tripping Gilmour, and the blade clipped his face by accident. Toronto made it back to the Conference Finals in 1994, 1999, and 2002, but never got close to winning those series.
* Both the 2007 and 2011 Super Bowls wound up being this for the New England Patriots. Just when it seemed like the Patriots finally broke through the Giants' defense to take the lead late in the game, Eli Manning threw a wild pass down field that was completed for major yardage and the Giants ultimately won both games. 2007 being the strongest example, since the Patriots had an undefeated regular season and playoffs before the Super Bowl game.
* The Cincinnati Bengals got bit hard by this trope. In the 2015 Wild Card Playoff game against their hated rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, The Bengals rally from a 15-0 deficit to take a 16-15 lead. Then intercept the ball on the Steelers next possession, it looked like the Bengals were well on their way to their first postseason win since 1990...only for Bengals halfback Jeremy Hill to ''fumble the ball'' deep within their own territory. The Steelers get the ball back, the Bengals defense commit ''over thirty yards of personal foul penalties'', sending the Steelers Offense into Field Goal Range, where they won ''18-16'', extending the Bengals [[EveryYearTheyFizzleOut long playoff losing streak]]. Beforehand, the Bengals previously started the season 8-0.
* Anderson Varejão, a professional basketball player for the UsefulNotes/NationalBasketballAssociation, spent most of his career playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He experienced all the heartbreak and frustration year in and year out during the 2000s - when Lebron James failed to deliver them a title in the 2006-07 season by getting swept in the finals, the huge season losing records during the years James left to play for the Miami Heat, to another heartbreaking finals loss in the 2014-15 season after James came back. In the 2015-16 season, he was traded to the Golden State Warriors, the team that beat the Cavaliers for the championship last season. He helped the team make it to the finals for a chance to repeat, and a chance for him to finally win a championship ring. During the championship series, Golden State was ahead 3 games to 1, only for the Cavaliers to pull a shocking comeback, winning 3 straight games to take the title in Game 7. Varejao came very close to finally winning a ring, only for his former team to do what many believed was the impossible.
* Actor Javier Cámara was nominated for best actor in the inaugural Feroz Awards (often regarded as Spain's take on the Golden Globes) in 2014, losing to Antonio de la Torre. In 2015 he was nominated again, and lost to Javier Gutiérrez. He got a third nomination in 2016... only for his ''Truman'' co-star Ricardo Darín to snatch the award from under him.
* Stock investors were unaware that Nintendo merely has a roughly ''one-third'' ownership of the Pokemon Company and is otherwise not really involved in the development of ''VideoGame/PokemonGo'' which is handled by Niantic, causing a huge spike in their market cap, a good chunk of which dropped away [[https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2016/160722e.pdf after Nintendo clarified the situation.]]

* The Philippines in the 1970s. It was one of the fastest growing economies in Asia second only to Japan, then when the Marcos administration took over it all spiraled downward.
* In 1917, the working class of Russia overthrew the corrupt government of the tsar and the nobles and replaced their rule with that of a working class government, with UsefulNotes/VladimirLenin chosen as the leader. Unfortunately, Lenin's rise to power triggered the Russian Civil War between Communist Red and White armed forces. Come 1924 and the war was over, but Lenin died by illness and the new leader who took over was named UsefulNotes/JosefStalin...

* Whenever you're on the verge of winning and you lose.
* Any multiplayer game with some obscure means of assassination; you can be inches from your goal, constantly twitching your head on a gyro to look for enemies, yet suddenly BAM! Were you shot in the head? Backstabbed? Sticky mines right under that step? Well, all your hard work is now undone, and you might not even know how it happened.

Not only are you a Social Link character for a cute girl, but if she maxes out your link, [[spoiler:you survive TakingTheBullet! Sure, you fall into a coma for the rest of the game, but you wake up for the ending... just in time for said girl to die either right before you get there or in your arms. But hey, you're still probably gonna die from those drugs you were taking, so at least you get to meet up in the afterlife, right? Ehh, sorry! She's become the Great Seal for Eternity, so meeting up with her in the afterlife is... unlikely]].
* Apparently, [[VideoGame/YggdraUnion Nessiah]] is just not allowed to be happy - he has ''one'' chance at it in VideoGame/BlazeUnion, and it's an extremely slim one. He's a main character in one of the three paths that story can take, but in it he gets the VillainBall ''hard''.
