The name is inspired by the French Third Republic and French State (two different entities, note) during UsefulNotes/WorldWarII. In 1940 French National Assembly voted extraordinary power to Marshall Philippe Pétain, the hero of Verdun, who agreed to armistices with UsefulNotes/NaziGermany and FascistItaly and became chief of the newly formed 'French State' which succeeded the Third Republic. Initially northern France was occupied by Germany, some parts along the Alps (and later Corsica as well) were occupied by Italy, and southern France remained under direct French control, an area known as 'la Zone libre', "the Free Zone". Pétain made the spa town of Vichy the seat of government and de facto capital and presided over a two-year (1940-42) era of close co-operation with and aid to Germany until Germany assumed direct control over the 'la Zone libre' so it could fortify southern France against an allied invasion. Though it called itself the French State, the allies dubbed it "Vichy France" or "The Vichy Régime" and the very name 'Vichy' became something of a byword for pragmatic, if somewhat shamefaced, collaboration with the enemy. French military and political elements that wished to continue the fight against the Axis and resist its new French client took the form of LaResistance, "Free France/Fighting France".

* ''[[VideoGame/XCom UFO: Enemy Unknown]]'' develops into this. As the game progresses, more and more nations will be taken over by alien infiltrators and stop funding X-Com. Should X-Com be disbanded, all of the Earth's governments will become LesCollaborateurs for a brief period, [[spoiler: then the aliens will invade openly and enslave humanity]].
** There's also [[TheQuisling EXALT]] in ''Enemy Within''. While not openly allied with the aliens, they hold a number of transhumanist ideals and agree with the alien's plan to conquer and guide humanity. While XCOM and the national militaries are resisting and fighting against the aliens, EXALT will actively undermine their ability to do so through covert ops.

Whatever the reason, Terra Firma has become a Vichy planet. Best case scenario, the aliens are [[WellIntentionedExtremist just doing it for our own good]] and intend to make sure [[LesCollaborateurs the new government]] works out for us. Worst case scenario, [[ToServeMan we all go into the meatgrinder]].

The name is inspired by the Third Republic and State of France (two different countries, note) during WorldWarTwo. In 1940 the government of the French Third Republic voted to replace the Republic with 'The State/Country of France' and give absolute power to Marshall Petain, the hero of Verdun, who he negotiated a peace treaty with Germany. Northern France was occupied by Germany, and southern France remained under French control. Petain made the spa-town of Vichy the new capital and presided over a two-year (1940-42) era of close co-operation with and aid to Germany until Germany invaded again so it could fortify southern France against an allied amphibious invasion. Though it called itself 'The French State', the allies dubbed it "Vichy France" or "The Vichy Regime" and the very name 'Vichy' became something of a byword for pragmatic, if somewhat shamefaced, collaboration with the enemy.

** ''[[VideoGame/{{XCOM2}} XCOM 2]]'' begins with this trope, taking place in an AlternateTimeline which assumes that XCOM was unsuccessful in repelling the alien assault, and the world governments surrendered, with the Earth now being ruled by the alien led Advent Administration. The Advent claims to be helping Earth by building shining futuristic cities and providing a number of alien technologies that improve human lives, but they also maintain a police state and make dissidents disappear. What's left of XCOM has gone underground, operating out of a flying MobileBase, and trying to undermine the Advent's control over Earth. LesCollaborateurs are now legitimate (and well-armed) enemies alongside the aliens, although XCOM soldiers are frequently forced to operate stealthily, since the organization now lacks global funding.

Somewhere between the [[WeComeInPeaceShootToKill friendly aliens and the aliens who want to wipe us out completely]], there's a group whose intentions are definitely hostile, but not genocidal. They land on Earth, knock down our pathetic defenses, and decide [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans things would be better]] if they ran our lives for us. Maybe they need slaves, maybe they think we don't know how to govern ourselves, maybe they're setting the stage for a [[KillAllHumans far more worrisome]] [[ToServeMan and sometimes tasty (tasty for them, that is) plan]].
