[[caption-width:240:Which is better? [[ContestedSequel You decide!]]]]

The ''Sonic Adventure Series'' is a sub-series of games in [[{{Sega}} Sega's]] ''SonicTheHedgehog'' series, notable for introducing the blue hedgehog to the realm of 3D platforming; this sub-series consists of two games: ''Sonic Adventure'' and ''Sonic Adventure 2''. ''SonicShuffle'' was released as a PartyGame spinoff.

Both games were released for the SegaDreamcast, and then re-released for the {{Nintendo}} {{GameCube}} when Sega decided to go third-party.

Much like ''VideoGame/SuperMario64'' did for {{Mario}}, the ''Adventure'' titles introduced the concepts and ideas that would be used for future 3D games in the Sonic series.

The Dreamcast versions were both major critical successes, for in addition to fun gameplay (UnexpectedGameplayChange be damned), they really showed off the power of the console. Their [=GameCube=] re-releases [[ItsTheSameNowItSucks were not as praised]], however, since they did not address most of the glitches present in their original versions, and partly because they did not make much use of the [=GameCube=]'s superior hardware.

In some Latin American places, however, due to the fact that [[NoExportForYou not even one of Sega's consoles got exported]], ''Sonic Adventure 2: Battle'' was praised as one of the best games that the [=GameCube=] could offer, and it's by many regarded as the best ''Sonic'' game ever, being also the first one there. ''Sonic Adventure DX'', for some reason, was obscure.

''Not'' to be confused with the [[WesternAnimation western]] {{animated adaptation}} ''AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog''.

In Japan, ''SonicUnleashed'' is considered part of this series under the name ''Sonic World Adventure''.
----
!!''Sonic Adventure'' (1999)
A launch title for the Dreamcast.

The game involves Sonic the Hedgehog trying to prevent the latest [[TakeOverTheWorld world domination scheme]] of [[BigBad Dr. Robotnik/Eggman]], which involves using all seven Chaos Emeralds to unleash the full power of a creature named Chaos. Sonic's story is tied into other characters' stories as well, although their goals differ. Introduced Big the Cat and E-102 Gamma.

Re-released for the [=GameCube=] in 2003 as ''Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut'', which added special missions and unlockable Game Gear games. As of September 15, 2010, it is now available for purchase on the XboxLiveArcade and PlayStationNetwork, with the DX missions [[{{DLC}} sold seperately.]]

!!!'''Playable Characters and their gameplay types:'''
* '''Sonic the Hedgehog''' - Sonic's gameplay style is the most reminiscent of the side-scrolling games. Just get to the goal (which is sometimes an animal capsule reminiscent of the Genesis games, sometimes a Chaos Emerald, occasionally just an end area)! Has 10 stages.
* '''Miles "Tails" Prower''' - Sonic's two-tailed fox buddy. All of Tails's stages pit you against Sonic [[spoiler:(and later Robotnik)]] in a race to the end of the stage. The stages are just a single section of Sonic's stages, with some fly-rings scattered throughout the sky to give you a boost. Has 5 stages.
** Note that the first ''Sonic Adventure'' is the only 3D ''Sonic'' game where Tails can fly (even in Chao World in ''Sonic Adventure 2'' he can't gain any altitude from flying), that isn't ''SonicHeroes'' or ''SonicTheHedgehog2006''. (for reasons that should be obvious if you visit their pages)
* '''Knuckles the Echidna''' - Current Guardian of the Master Emerald. When Chaos is released from the Emerald, it is naturally broken into pieces. Thus, the goal of each of the echidna's stages is to find three shards. Has 5 stages.
* '''Amy Rose''' - In her stages, Amy must outrun a robot in pursuit of her, Zero, and get to the giant balloon that will carry her away. Zero is actually ''not'' after Amy, but instead the little bird she is protecting, who unknown to her, [[spoiler:has a Chaos Emerald in its locket]]. Has 3 stages.
* '''Big the Cat''' - After his pal Froggy swallows a strange looking jewel and runs away from home, Big chases after the frog. The goal of each of his stages is to fish Froggy out of a body of water. Intended, along with the Chao Garden, as a way to help those new to Sonic games ease into the experience. Arguably, the Chao Garden did a much better job. Has 4 stages.
* '''E-102 "γ" (Gamma)''' - Shoot things up and get to the end of the stage before time runs out, which can be increased by killing multiple enemies at once. Has 5 stages, two of which are simply get to point B, and the other three of which are get to point B and beat the boss waiting for you.
* [[spoiler:'''Super Sonic''' - Defeat Perfect Chaos!]]

!!!'''[=SA1=] provides examples of:'''
* AbridgedSeries: See the first episode [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFG5dhOXt7I here.]]
* AbsurdlySpaciousSewer: Averted with Station Square's sewers, played straight with those of Casinopolis (you get dumped in there if you lose a game of pinball and come away with less than 100 rings)
* AirborneAircraftCarrier: The Egg Carrier [[spoiler:and the Egg Carrier II]].
* AnAesop: [[spoiler: Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The tragic story of the Echidna race and Chaos prove this.]]
* AndYourRewardIsClothes: [[spoiler: Getting all medals unlocks Metal Sonic, who is essentially a reskinned Sonic with slightly altered animations. You can only use him in Trial mode.]]
* AnotherSideAnotherStory: Play through the main story from 6 different perspectives. Each character also gets a piece of the backstory of Chaos and the echidna race, only by playing through all stories do you get the complete sequence.
* ArtEvolution: [=SA1=] introduced the art style for Sonic and friends that would be used in future games. Amy was the one affected most by this, as she no longer looks like [[DistaffCounterpart a pink Sonic in drag]]. However, the Sonic-themed pinball table in Sonic's version of Casinopolis ''does'' feature stock artwork from the earlier games.
* AscendedExtra: Amy, originally a minor semi-recurrer beforehand, gained a prominant playable role in this and many titles following it.
* BareYourMidriff: Tikal.
* BattleInTheRain: Sonic's first encounter with Chaos.
* BookEnds: Knuckles's story begins and ends with him narrating how he was fated to stay forever on Angel Island guarding the Master Emerald. In the beginning, he mentions that he doesn't know why he was given this role in life, but in the end, he believes he is better off for that.
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:Both Tikal and Chaos.]]
* CallBack: Icecap first appeared as "Ice Cap Zone" in ''Sonic the Hedgehog 3''. Both are set on Angel Island.
* TheCameo: [[SonicTheHedgehogCD Metal Sonic]] and [[SonicTheHedgehog3 Mecha Sonic]] in the Final Egg.
** [[SonicR Tails Doll]] (along with puppet versions of Knuckles and Sonic) appear as training dummies in E-102's first level.
* CaptainObvious: Quite a few snarky moments in [=SA1=], if you look closely.
-->''(the Egg Carrier changes its shape)''
-->'''Tails:''' Oh wow! It's changed shape! Did you see that?
-->''(Sonic gives him a weary look, and ignores him)''
-->'''Sonic:''' Shoot! How are we going to get to the bridge?
-->'''Tails''': I hate it when he doesn't listen.
* CharacterDevelopment: Tails learns to take on troubles without Sonic's help, and he even musters the courage to stop Robotnik's attack on Station Square. Amy also goes from being a DamselInDistress depending on Sonic to save her to an ActionGirl beating up the very robot that constantly pursued her. Finally, E-102 Gamma learns about love and caring, which motivates it to stop being a mindless servant to Robotnik, go on its own mission, and make [[spoiler:[[HeroicSacrifice the ultimate sacrifice in the end to free the bird trapped inside]]]].
* TheComputerIsACheatingBastard: Present in Tails's stages, specifically of the RubberBandAI variety.
* ConvectionSchmonvection: Sonic and Gamma can survive just fine in the incredibly hot volcano section of Red Mountain, with lava and geysers being the only hazards that damage them. Then again, this is true of all Sonic games where the characters don't suffer any ill effects from standing only a few inches above a lava pit.
* CrazyPrepared: Eggman. Not only does he have the God of Destruction at his command, he has a giant flying carrier (although it functions more like a battleship), [[spoiler:a second carrier to use against Chaos if it goes rogue, a HUGE missile stationed off the coast of Station Square should the Egg Carrier and Chaos be defeated]], and a giant base in the middle of Mystic Ruins.
* CrystalPrison
* CurbStompBattle: In the final route of the game, [[spoiler:Robotnik hops into the Egg Carrier 2 to tame Perfect Chaos. It's onscreen for maybe 30 seconds before Perfect Chaos blows it up.]]
* CutsceneIncompetence: In some cutscenes, Sonic is just standing there.
** He also...um...''gesticulates wildly'' with his eyebrows. Seriously, they're bouncing all over the place!
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: Now we know why Sonic refuses to sit in the cockpit of Tails' plane - Because gravity means '''nothing''' to him. He survives falling several kilometers to the ground not once, but ''twice'' in the game. The second time, Sonic's body endures a comical pancake effect when he hits the ground, but he's no worse for wear.
* DevelopmentHell: This wasn't the first attempt to bring Sonic to (non-isometric) 3D platforming. ''Sonic X-Treme'' for the SegaSaturn was supposed to do this, but turmoil within the company over the game's direction reduced it to VaporWare. According to Sonic co-creator Yuji Naka in an interview for the first issue of Official Dreamcast Magazine, [=SA1=] was at one time supposed to be a Saturn game, but the idea was scrapped when the company decided to focus on the Dreamcast.
* [[DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu Did You Just Punch Out The God of Destruction?]]
* TheDragon: Chaos to Robotnik. [[spoiler: [[DragonWithAnAgenda If just to get the Emeralds.]]]]
** E-102 Gamma to a lesser extent plays a similar role to Robotnik [[spoiler: prior to a HeelFaceTurn]] helping in preserve his alternative Dragon.
* EasterEgg: Cream the Rabbit [[EarlyBirdCameo makes a short appearance]] in the remake. [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wexxG6IaNi4&feature=related See video here.]] Also, E-105ζ "Zeta" is made of 6 Sega Dreamcast consoles [[http://info.sonicretro.org/File:E105.png located around the grey blocks under his cannons.]]
* EggshellClothing: One of the Chaos
* EldritchAbomination: Chaos
* FiveManBand:
** TheHero: Sonic
** TheLancer: Knuckles
** TheSmartGuy: Tails
** TheBigGuy: Big the Cat
** TheChick: Amy Rose
** TheSixthRanger: E-102 Gamma
* FixedCamera: Made more adjustable in the DX version.
* FloatingContinent: Angel Island before the Master Emerald was shattered, and the third segment of Sonic's version of Windy Valley.
* FreeRotatingCamera: Not universal though.
* FreudianExcuse: [[spoiler:Pachacamac retroactively gets one through ''Chronicles''.]]
* {{Futureshadowing}}: Some of the visions of the past do this. No, seriously.
* GameBreakingBugs: Windows will crash in certain times in DX. Most notably the fight with Dr. Eggman in the Mystic Ruins.
* GoingThroughTheMotions: Not a major example, but quite noticeable in Amy's ending when she performs her boss victory animation and then abruptly snaps back to her standing animation.
* HallOfMirrors: A segment exclusive to Amy's version of Twinkle Park.
* HelpFaceTurn: Eggman [[spoiler:[[YouHaveFailedMe disposing of Gamma's incompetent brethren]] in front of his eyes]], arguably him [[spoiler:abandoning Chaos on the falling Egg Carrier to be finished by Knuckles may have played part in the latter's double cross as well]].
* HeyItsThatVoice: Big the Cat is [[DukeNukem DUKE F***ING NUKEM.]] Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
* HongKongDub
* TheHub: Station Square, Mystic Ruins, and the Egg Carrier.
* IdiotBall: All three incidents when Sonic and Tails lose chaos emeralds to Robotnik. The third time this occurs, when two chaos emeralds are knocked out of Sonic/Tails's {{Hammerspace}} (depending on what character you're being) by a sharp impact. He then proceeds to '''lie there''' while Robotnik lazily floats over and [[TractorBeam beams them up]].
* IgnorantOfTheCall: Most of the cast react this way to Tikal's flashbacks. Near the end of his story Sonic fails to get the message that he should go after Chaos instead of Robotnik.
* IncomingHam: Oh yes, Robotnik's ''first line in the game'' is this. "You know NOTHING, fools! It's ''CHAOS'', the '''GOD''' of '''DESTRUCTION!!!!'''"
* IOweYouMyLife: Not directly stated, but E-102 Gamma's resolve to rescue the animals trapped inside the E-Series robots was partly due to Amy saving its life. [[spoiler:Gamma brings the trope to its natural conclusion by giving up its own life so that the Flicky powering it could be reunited with the bird Amy was taking care of.]]
** Said act by Amy was also provoked by Gamma freeing her and Birdie from Eggman's cell inside the Egg Carrier (which would later crash land into the ocean) making it both issued and returned at the same time.
* KaizoTrap: Egg Viper. The camera angle isn't great either, so even if you know it's coming, you won't be able to tell where he's gonna hit so you may still die anyway. Cue rage.
* {{Leitmotif}}
* LensFlare: Present in some of the cutscenes.
* LethalLavaLand: Red Mountain, [[HailfirePeaks combined with]] some DeathMountain.
* MacguffinDeliveryService: Sonic and friends do a ''terrible'' job of keeping the Chaos Emeralds away from Eggman.
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: E-102 Gamma ultimately.
* MythologyGag: [[AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog "Ooh, I hate that Sonic!"]]
* OffscreenTeleportation: Zero in Amy's levels.
* PalmtreePanic: Emerald Coast.
* PantyShot: Amy belts one out when you choose her in the character select screen. Made unsettling by the fact that she's [[{{Lolicon}} only 12]].
* PinballZone: Sonic's version of Casinopolis features Sonic and {{NiGHTS}}-[[ShoutOut themed]] pinball tables. Naturally, ''Sonic'' is the pinball.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Rather than talk to Sonic about why he's after the Master Emerald shards,Knuckles instead immediatly starts a fight with Sonic and Tails without reasonably asking the two directly about it, which could of prevented the whole fight in the first place.
* ThePowerOfFriendship: The bond of Sonic with his {{Nakama}} allows him to unlock the full potential of Super Sonic with the Chaos Emeralds, although Tails does say that Chaos only absorbed the negative energy of the Emeralds.
* RashomonStyle: Who won in the character vs. character fights? It depends who you ask. Most of the dialogue was rerecorded for each story even when it doesn't need to be.
** In Sonic and Tails's stories, the character played as is the one who fights most of the bosses and puts the keys in the Mystic Ruins.
* RecursiveAdaptation: Kind of. The version released on Steam for the PC in 2011 was a port of the Xbox Live in 2010, which was in turn a port of the PC version released in 2003.
** PC version is a port of the GameCube version. Yeesh.
*** And, of course, the GameCube version was a port of the original Dreamcast version.
* SealedEvilInACan: Chaos [[spoiler: was originally sealed in the Master Emerald along with Tikal when he was about to destroy the world, but in modern times Robotnik freed him by destroying the Master Emerald.]]
* SealedGoodInACan: [[spoiler: Tikal, technically.]]
* SlippySlideyIceWorld: Icecap, with an IcePalace section.
* SmokeOut: Eggman employs a variety of these tricks, including a flash grenade and sleeping gas.
* SuddenlyVoiced: ''Everyone''. The early games didn't even have ''subtitled lines''.
** Except Sonic and Eggman. [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0Qr0kSXGEg They talked]] in ''[=SegaSonic The Hedgehog=]''. (Ray and Mighty did too, but only Mighty reappeared, and even then only in KnucklesChaotix.) A few months later, Sonic sometimes exclaimed in SonicCD.
* TempleOfDoom: Lost World.
* ThatsNoMoon: The excavation team at the Mystic Ruins is flummoxed by a "mountain" which suddenly appeared from nowhere. Unbeknown to them (and the player, at first), it's actually Angel Island.
* TheVoiceless: Chaos.
* ThemeSongPowerUp: Subverted, Inverted, and Averted all in the final battle against Perfect Chaos. "Open Your Heart" (the game's main theme and Super Sonic's personal theme, more or less) plays during the first half of the battle. After you hit Chaos a number of times, it revives and the second half plays out under Perfect Chaos' own theme. It's subverted because Super Sonic doesn't defeat the creature for good while his own theme is playing, inverted because Perfect Chaos' own theme is what plays during the second half (after it's rejuvenated) so Chaos is the one powering up to its own theme, and averted because it doesn't do a lick of good anyway (it's already losing by the time its music starts up; you just have to land the finishing blow).
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: The opening trailer contains the destruction of Station Square and Chaos's final transformation. Since this is the first Sonic game with an unlockable secret finale, it may have been intentional to prevent players from putting the game down after completing Sonic's story. Or just to get some extra milage out of the lengthy FMV sequence.
* TranquilFury: In contrast to his usual LargeHam, Robotnik's encounter with Tails in the Egg Walker has him speak this way. Surprisingly, it's very unsettling.
* UpdatedRerelease: The [=GameCube=] DX version, which added some more character cameos (namely Cream) and a catalog of Game Gear games. Further upgraded with the PSN and XBLA, with trophy/achievement support.
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: [[spoiler:Pachacamac's reasoning for wanting the Chaos Emeralds taken from the shrine. It does nothing to cover up his power hungry nature and lack of regard for life at that point.]]
* {{Video Game 3D Leap}}
* WhatMeasureIsAMook: E-102 Gamma's story deconstructs this trope by virtue of being a playable {{mook}}.
* YouHaveFailedMe: Robotnik sorta does this to Gamma's E-Series brethren after they fail to retrieve the Chaos-enhanced Froggy, dispatching E-103ζ Zeta for a torturous upgrade and demoting E-104δ Delta and E-105ε Epsilon to generic "badniks" in random areas.
** Which doesn't make a great deal of sense when you remember that they're ''the Egg Carrier's crew''. How is Gamma meant to keep the place running by himself?
** Admittedly the rest of the Egg Carrier "crew" [[ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything weren't really seen doing much]] outside trying (and failing) to collect Froggy (Gamma attempted to collect Birdie and destroy Sonic and again failed at both). Not to mention Eggman was nearly at the brink of completing Chaos at which point [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness they would likely be needless to his plan]].
* [[YouWontGetAwayWithThis You Won't Get Away With This]]: Said by Tails in regards to Robotnik's scheme.
** Robotnik says this in every battle when he has 1 hitpoint remaining.

!!''Sonic Adventure 2'' (2001)
One of the Dreamcast's final releases, and a title to mark the [[MilestoneCelebration 10th anniversary]] of the series.

Framed for the criminal acts of a black hedgehog, Sonic joins his friends to stop Eggman from collecting and using the Chaos Emeralds to fuel the deadly Eclipse Cannon of the abandoned Space Colony Ark.

This is the first game in the series (bar racing and party games) where you get to play as the villains, and by extension, the first where you get to play as Eggman. Introduced Shadow the Hedgehog and Rouge the Bat.

Re-released for the [=GameCube=] in 2002 as ''Sonic Adventure 2 Battle'', which added Chao Karate and more stuff to 2-Player Mode.

!!!'''Gameplay Types/Playable Characters'''
* '''Action Stage''' (a.k.a. classic Sonic style) - Sonic/Shadow
* '''Shooting Stage''' (a la Gamma from [=SA1=]) - Tails/Eggman
* '''Hunting Stage''' - Knuckles/Rouge

There is also one driving stage each for Tails and Rouge. Beating one of them unlocks the single-player kart racing minigame, while beating the other unlocks the two-player option.

!!!'''[=SA2=] provides examples of:'''
* AndYourRewardIsClothes: The rewards for getting all the emblems/A-Ranks for a character are an alternate outfit in 2P-Mode and an alternate kart in the kart racing minigame, although they ''do'' have some different attributes (Tails's alternate mech, for example, makes him a ''lot'' faster, but robs him of the ability to use special attacks).
* ArtisticLicensePhysics: After Eggman uses the Eclipse Cannon aboard the ARK to blow a chunk out of the moon ''as a warning shot'', everyone become concerned about the seriousness of Eggman's threats and possible responses - never mind the fact that the affect on the tides alone would cause incalculable casualties in RealLife.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Knuckles and Rouge show signs of this throughout most of the game.
* BilingualBonus: An army called GUN is not just a [[IncrediblyLamePun horrible pun in English]]; "gun" is also the Japanese word for "army".
* BreakTheCutie: Eggman does this to Tails and Amy by [[spoiler:shooting Sonic out of an explosive rocket]] before their very eyes, leaving them to think that [[spoiler:Eggman finally killed their best friend (don't worry, he used Chaos Control)]].
* BadAssLabcoat: Gerald Robotnik.
* BrokenPedestal: Even Eggman is surprised when [[spoiler:Gerald]] turns out to be a nutbar.
* TheCameo: Big the Cat can be seen during some cutscenes and even in the middle of some levels, as well as used in multiplayer... in the Dreamcast version.
* CameraScrew
* [[ChekhovsGun Chekhov's Gun]]: After seeing Shadow disappear in a flash of light as he used Chaos Control as many times as he did -- and for that matter, seeing Sonic escape certain death via Chaos Control once before -- was it really such a stretch to believe that Shadow [[NeverFoundTheBody had survived his plummet to Earth?]] On the same note, Tails mentioning that the fake Emerald had the exact same wavelength as a real Chaos Emerald came in handy later when [[spoiler: Sonic used Chaos Control to escape Eggman's trap]].
** Those mathematical symbols on Sonic's jail cell in Prison Island? [[LampshadeHanging The ones that Amy comments on?]] Why yes, those were the calculation performed by [[spoiler: Dr. Gerald Robotnik to calculate how long it would take for the ARK to impact the Earth. You see the cell in all of Gerald's diary entries.]]
* TheChessmaster: Shadow the Hedgehog, [[spoiler: who manages to take advantage of Eggman's ambitions in order to further his own hidden plan to get revenge on humanity for the G.U.N. massacre on the ARK 50 years ago.]]
** And Shadow's actions, in turn, were the result of [[spoiler: Gerald Robotnik placing subliminal messages and tampering with memories during Shadow's 50 year hibernation when he went mad.]]
* ClassyCatBurglar: Rouge the Bat.
* ColonyDrop: [[spoiler:The Last Story.]]
* TheComputerIsACheatingBastard: In the racing minigame, computer opponents can make 90 degree turns ''instantly'' without losing ''any'' momentum.
** In the levels near the end of each campaign where you face off against your same-mission-type Rival once again, they can use the usually 2player-mode-only special attacks, but you cannot.
* CriminalDoppelganger: Pretty much the reason why Sonic is captured by G.U.N. twice and why him and his friends are constantly chased throughout this game. Justified in that the only times that Shadow is seen by the police is during the night and that there only happen to be two well-known anthropomorphic hedgehogs in the world.
* CutsceneIncompetence: Sonic's capture by GUN at the end of City Escape.
* CuteLittleFangs: Rouge the Bat has them.
* CutscenePowerToTheMax: In the Hero Story, Sonic engages in a boss battle against the Egg Golem. In the same sequence in the Dark Story, the fight is condensed into one flying kick, complete with a ThemeMusicPowerUp.
* DatingCatwoman: Knuckles and Rouge.
* DeadLittleSister: Maria's death hit Shadow hard. But not as hard as it hit Gerald, who completely ''[[OmnicidalManiac snapped.]]''
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: Knuckles and Rouge after the whole Meteor Herd incident.
* DisproportionateRetribution: [[spoiler: Gerald held all of humanity responsible for Maria's death, when it was really just GUN.]]
* EnemyMine: The hero and dark teams both team up in the final story [[spoiler: to prevent the ColonyDrop.]]
* EternalEngine: Trope Namer.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Eggman may want to use the Space Colony ARK to take over the Earth, but he balks at the idea of using its power to kill all humanity.
* EvilCounterpart: Shadow to Sonic.
* EvilVirtues: For Eggman, it's hard work. In the ending, Eggman reveals that he aspired to Gerald's great accomplishments from the time he was little.
* ExtremityExtremist: Knuckles and Rouge use only punches and kicks, respectively.
* FinalSpeech: [[spoiler: Gerald gives one before being executed by GUN. It basically outlined his ColonyDrop plans and gave a big "You've been warned" message to humanity.]]
** [[spoiler: Shadow gives one believing that he has finally fulfilled Maria's final wish as he plummets to the Earth. Keep in mind that Sega originally planned to keep him KilledOffForReal when the game was released.]]
* FogFeet: A chao that plays with bats will eventually have its legs disappear; it'll hover above the ground instead.
* FridgeHorror: When Eggman blows up part of the moon, just stop and think about where [[OhCrap those big chunks of rock went.]]
* FunWithAcronyms / SpellingSong: Averted on both counts with Eggman's theme, "E.G.G.M.A.N."-- it's never spelled out in-song, and it doesn't seem to stand for anything. (Amusingly, it's also one of exactly two songs ever to use the exact phrase "[[TheBeatles I am the Eggman]]".)
* FurryConfusion: Rouge the Bat is a playable character, but regular Bats can be found and rescued from the stages. Most confusing is the fact that the Bat is only in this game.
** The level ''Death Chamber'' takes it even further: it has actual, real-life bats. That's three different kinds of bats in one game!
* GameplayAndStorySegregation: All three of the good vs. evil battles are ultimately seen to end in draws, even though you have to win the actual fight for whichever side you're playing.
** An especially noticeable example is the battle against the Egg Golem. In Hero Story, you have to (as Sonic) get behind it and jump up platforms on its back in order to homing attack its head's weak point to damage it; you need to do this several times. In the Dark Story, it's defeated by Sonic in a cutscene where he takes a giant leap at its weak point (a leap which, incidentally, is not possible when ''playing'' as Sonic) and defeats it in one kick.
* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: Various BGM tracks have suggestive lyrics, but Wild Canyon takes the cake. The radar caught this one; the ESRB rating has "Mild Lyrics" as a descriptor. But apparently, SEGA's translators didn't.
-->''"They wanna [[IfYouKnowWhatIMean play with my Emeralds]]? They're playing with the wrong guy!"''
-->''"Yeah, Rouge, she's sexy and smooth! A double cross spot-thief, that's [[IfYouKnowWhatIMean out for my jewels]]."''
** That may not be intentional though, as the song does mean it literally. However they do use "damn" in at least 2 different songs, and the "Mild Lyrics" did not appear on the back of the box until Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, as the original did not have that.
** Shoot, [[MsFanservice Rouge's]] [[{{stripperiffic}} design]] by itself does this.
* GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere: King Boom Boo.
* GrindBoots: Sonic's shoes were redesigned into this. Shadow's are also able to grind.
* GuideDangIt: The hidden [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5lYzoBsaTo Secretary]] and [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCL3Zm278_g Maria]] menu themes.
** Some of the "Find the Lost Chao!" Missions are near impossible to complete without looking in a guide. In particular, all the steps that you need to do in [[VeryDefinitelyFinalDungeon Cannon's Core]] to find that chao is pretty daunting.
** Cannon's Core - [[BlatantLies Knuckles' mission is not that hard.]] If you found the really well hidden Air Necklace in a previous level.
* HeroAntagonist: GUN
* HeroicSacrifice: Shadow after turning face in what is quite possibly the most famous example of this trope in a Sonic game. Overlaps with RedemptionEqualsDeath.
* HongKongDub: When the line takes longer to say in English than it did in Japanese, the next line will start while the previous one is still going...even when the next line is spoken by the same character.
* HumansAreBastards: Shadow's initial viewpoint. As well as Gerald's.
* InsultToRocks: Shadow finds it almost insulting that GUN mistook Sonic for him.
-->"You're not even good enough to be my ''fake''!
* IronicEcho: "Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog."
* ItRunsInTheFamily: The Robotnik family [[StrongFamilyResemblance mustache]]!
** InTheBlood: [[spoiler:Batshit insanity]], too.
* KarmaHoudini: GUN.
* KickChick: Rouge, to contrast Knuckles' punches only attack style.
* KillSat: Space Colony ARK.
* KnightTemplar: GUN will do almost anything to preserve world order. They got better eventually. Also, Gerald believed his ColonyDrop against humanity to be "justice" for the Ark Disaster.
* KillTheCutie: [[spoiler: Poor Maria.]]
* LawyerFriendlyCameo: The President.
* MoreThanMindControl: It's subtly implied that Gerald "reprogrammed" Shadow to go along with his genocidal ColonyDrop plan.
** More than implied. He "designed its mind to be perfect. Pure..."
* MrViceGuy / AntiHero: Rouge is secretly a government agent who's job is to protect the world from threats like Eggman and Shadow, and turns out to be GoodAllAlong. Also, her passion is jewels and in her free time she goes around greedily stealing gems wherever she can find them, not caring whether they're, y'know, necessary to the balance of the planet or not. Somehow, these two things never seem to clash - in fact, she's apparently only a good guy some of the time because the government pays her in jewelry.
* [[MsFanservice Ms. Fanservice]]: This game introduced the world to [[BuxomBabe Rouge]] [[BoobsOfSteel the Bat.]] She has [[MostCommonSuperpower a big bust]], [[AbsoluteCleavage a revealing outfit]], combined with JigglePhysics, and HartmanHips that go hand in hand with a [[BabyGotBack shapley keester]].
* MusicalNod: [[EarWorm City Escape]] appears as an instrumental in [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUZBu0gELsw Mario & Sonic Olympic Winter Games]].
* NoConservationOfEnergy: When Sonic and Shadow use Chaos Control to stop the falling ARK, the colony comes to a complete halt. The explosion of light was no where near big enough to be equal to its previous momentum. Of course, SEGA has never bothered to explain exactly ''how'' Chaos Control works, [[AWizardDidIt so... ]]
* NoSidepathsNoExplorationNoFreedom: ''Adventure 2'' does away with Adventure fields and the ability to select characters, instead having the player experience every gameplay style in the same story, with stages coming one after another in sequence. Upgrades are found within the stages as well.
* NostalgiaLevel: Collecting all 180 Emblems rewards you with a 3D version of GreenHillZone from the original ''Sonic the Hedgehog''.
* NotSoDifferent: Eggman and Tails share a moment on the ARK observation deck at the end.
* TheOtherDarrin: Knuckles is voiced by Scott Dreier in this game, when he was voiced by Michael [=McGaharn=] in the first. However, their voices are similar enough, so it's hard to notice the change.
* ThisIsSparta: Eggman when you get an A-Rank.
--> "NOW YOU KNOW WHY I! AM! THE BEST!"
* OutGambitted: Sonic and Tails plot to give Eggman a fake Emerald that will explode when it's put into the Eclipse Cannon, thus making it unusable. Having a feeling that this would happen, Eggman seals Sonic inside a rocket, causes Tails to accidently spill the beans, and shoots Sonic out of the Ark to a most certain death. Good thing Sonic still has that fake Emerald in his hands, and it is powerful enough for Sonic to use Chaos Control...
** See YouJustToldMe.
* OmnicidalManiac: [[spoiler:Gerald]] did ''not'' take Maria's death well.
* PoliceAreUseless: Even ''Sonic'' lampshades this.
* PosthumousCharacter: Gerald Robotnik.
* ProductPlacement: Due to Sonic now wearing Soap Shoes, ads for them are all over the game.
* PromotedToUnlockable: Robotnik.
* PsychoPrototype: [[spoiler:The Biolizard]] is this to Shadow the Hedgehog.
* RankInflation: You are ranked at the end of a stage based on your score (although you can automatically earn a perfect A if you collect ''every single ring'' in the stage). All 3D Sonics following this game would use a similar ranking system.
** NintendoHard: Getting A ranks on the early Action and Shooting stages aren't ''too'' obscenely hard, but roughly halfway through the game they become incredibly annoying without resorting to SequenceBreaking shortcuts to get massive time bonuses. And let's not even talk about the Hunting Stages, the system for which has been tweaked to be ''even more annoying''.
* ReactorBoss: EternalEngine, in which Tails fights ARK's power generator.
* TheRedSonja: Rouge for Knuckles.
* TheRival: Sonic/Shadow, Tails/Eggman, and Knuckles/Rouge.
* SelfImposedChallenge: Try beating Knuckles' section in Cannons Core WITHOUT the Air Necklace.
* ShoutOut: To ''{{Nights}}'' and ''SambaDeAmigo''.
* SlidingScaleOfLinearityVsOpenness: The main game is level 3. There are multiple paths through each level, with more being unlocked as you gain more items, and you can replay levels with different goals for more emblems. The chao raising mini-game, though, is decidedly level 6, for the game gives you no overall goal to accomplish in raising your chao.
* SoundtrackDissonance: The themes for all of his stages seem to imply that [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy Knuckles]] is gangsta.
* StealthPun: The style of music played in Shadow's White Jungle stage, minus the [[AmenBreak Amen]].
* StopHelpingMe: Omochao, a chao-esque robot with a penchant for stating the obvious. Sega ''[[LampshadeHanging had]]'' [[LampshadeHanging to have known how much the mecha twerp would annoy players]], so it can be hit, thrown, and whatever else you can think of to shut it up, although sometimes it will [[WhatTheHellHero chew you out for the abuse]]..
* {{Stripperiffic}}: [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/sonic/images/4/41/Rouge_18.png Rouge's alternate outfit in 2P-Mode]].
* SuperDeformed: Curiously, Chaos Zero looks a lot "cuter" than he did in ''Sonic Adventure''.
* SympatheticPOV: The Last story consolidates them.
* [[{{ptitle79i5ttca}} The Ugly Guy's Hot Granddaughter]]: Maria Robotnik. Eggman's related to '''''her'''''???
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Tails vows to never forgive Eggman for [[spoiler:blowing Sonic to smithereens, ([[OrIsIt or so he and Amy think]])]]...
* TubeTravel: In the Crazy Gadget stage.
* TheVamp: Rouge the Bat.
* WorldMap: The stage select screen is done this way.
* WorthyOpponent: Eggman displays a sudden spike in competence when he locks Sonic in a space pod and then fires it into space. -- And then blows it up for good measure. As he overlooks the explosion, Eggman solemnly declares Sonic an "admirable adversary."
* YouJustToldMe: Eggman pulls a magnificent one on Tails and Sonic when they come to rescue Amy.
--> '''Eggman:''' You thought you could trick me with that fake emerald, didn't you?
--> '''Tails:''' So... how did you know it wasn't the real one?
--> '''Sonic:''' Tails!
--> '''Eggman:''' Because ''you just TOLD me, fox boy!''

!!Both games provide examples of:
* AnimatedAdaptation: Both games were adapted into arcs in the AnimeOfTheGame ''SonicX''.
* [[AutobotsRockOut Hedgehogs Rock Out]]: Admit it, the Crush 40 songs are friggin' awesome.
* BittersweetEnding: At the end of [[spoiler:Super Sonic]]'s story in [=SA1=], Tails says "all's well that ends well," even though [[spoiler:all of Station Square had just been demolished and flooded by Perfect Chaos's rampage, and ''at least'' half of the population had to have been killed]]. The final story of [=SA2=] ends with [[spoiler:Shadow preventing the ColonyDrop by sacrificing himself]].
** The bitterness of the latter is somewhat negated since Shadow got better in ''SonicHeroes''. YourMileageMayVary heavily on this.
* BlobMonster: Chaos from [=SA1=] and the knockoffs on the ARK created by Gerald Robotnik in [=SA2=].
* BossRush: Beating a story unlocks a minigame where you fight each of the bosses faced in that story one after the other (the exception being [[spoiler:Super Sonic]] in [=SA1=], whose story ''only'' consists of a single boss fight with some Adventure Field navigation beforehand).
** Also, Gamma only fights Beta [[spoiler: and Beta II.]] The other E-100s are left out.
* CameraScrew
* ComicBookAdaptation: Both games were adapted in story arcs in [[ArchieComics Archie]]'s ''ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehog'' comic book. The first ''Sonic Adventure'' was also adapted as what was notably the last new story arc in ''SonicTheComic''.
* ContinuityNod
-->'''Sonic (to Knuckles):''' "[[SonicTheHedgehog3 Did Eggman trick you ]]''[[SonicAndKnuckles again]]''?"
** In the first Adventure, the music for Twinkle Park's hovercraft and Windy Valley's "The Air" segments are remixes of the ''Panic Puppet'' and ''Green Grove'' zone themes from ''Sonic3DFlickiesIsland''.
** Tails is said in [=SA2=] to have got a Chaos Emerald for beating Eggman in Station Square back in [=SA1=].
** One of Amy's flashbacks in [=SA1=] is of Sonic saving her in ''SonicCD''. However the models weren't changed.
* DarkerAndEdgier: There's this series compared to the Sonic games before it, and then there's Sonic Adventure 2 compared to Sonic Adventure 1.
** Sonic Adventure 1 literally starts off with its opening cutscene depicting a city being flooded by Perfect Chaos, and later in the game, [[spoiler: the echidna tribe crosses a MoralEventHorizon]].
** In Sonic Adventure 2, there's more than one character in the game who swears revenge on all humanity, and their motives are revealed in some cutscenes. Furthermore, Dr. Eggman, [[VillainProtagonist who you can play as in this game]], is willing to use a "weapon of mass destruction" (yes, it is actually described as that in the game) as a means of trying to intimidate people into surrendering to his empire, by threatening to fire it at inhabited parts of Earth. He demonstrates its power by firing it at the moon, and it happens to take quite a chunk out of the moon for that matter... add to that, of course, the government conspiracy sideplot, that involves them assassinating numerous innocent people on board the ARK (with Maria even dying onscreen). Outside maybe the Archie comics, this was perhaps the grimest depiction of Sonic yet at this point in time.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: In ''1'', Chaos only helps Eggman to get the Emeralds so that [[spoiler: Chaos can go OneWingedAngel and destroy the world]], while in ''2'', Shadow does pretty much the same thing, [[spoiler: in order to trigger Gerald's ColonyDrop plan to avenge [[DeadLittleSister Maria's]] death]].
* EleventhHourSuperpower: In the end of both games, Sonic becomes Super Sonic to stop the final bosses.
* EternalEngine: Final Egg in [=SA1=] and [[TropeNamer Eternal Engine]] in [=SA2=].
* GameplayRoulette: ''Sonic Adventure'' was where all of the infamous {{Unexpected Gameplay Change}}s the ''Sonic'' series infamous for started. ''Adventure 2'' was better about this, but it was still present.
* GRatedSex: Chao mating, combined with a HappyDance.
* {{Hammerspace}}: How Knuckles carts around his emerald pieces. (At least Rouge can claim to have a [[VictoriasSecretCompartment compartment]]). In ''[=SA2=]'', the Master Emerald seemingly has no set size, and even fits ''in Knuckle's palm'' during the finale.
** Taken to ridiculous levels when Amy's birdie manages to invisibly carry a chaos emerald the size of itself. Ditto for Froggy, who eats one.
* HeelFaceTurn
* IAmSong: Sonic's, Knuckles's, and Eggman's (in [=SA2=]) themes: ''[[ChaoticGood It Doesn't Matter]]'', ''[[BoastfulRap Unknown from M.E.]]'', and ''[[VillainSong E.G.G.M.A.N]]'' respectively.
* IWantSong: Tails's and Amy's themes: ''[[IJustWantToBeSpecial Believe in Myself]]'' and ''[[StalkerWithACrush My Sweet Passion]]''.
* InferredHolocaust: Both games. In ''1'', [[spoiler:Station Square is completly destroyed in the final battle.]] In ''2'', [[spoiler:Eggman ''destroys half the moon'' with the Eclipse Cannon as a ''warning shot''.]]
* LargeHam: Eggman, Eggman, [[RuleOfThree Eggman.]]
-->"YOUUUUUUUUUUU KNOOWWWWWWWWWW NOTHING, FOOOOOOOOOOOOL! It's ''CHAOS! The GOD! OF DESTRUCTION!! [[EvilLaugh HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!]]''"
** And yet as he says this, Sonic (who's right there) [[CutsceneIncompetence doesn't even notice him]].
* LeeroyJenkins: Sonic, even moreso than usual. He's concerned only with stopping Eggman and pays little attention to Tails' strategy sessions. When it looks like Eggman's getting away, Sonic ''[[UpToEleven dives headfirst off a flying aircraft carrier and into open space]]'' rather than let him escape!
* OneWingedAngel: Chaos in Sonic Adventure becomes Perfect Chaos when he drains the negative energy out of the Chaos Emeralds, the Biolizard in Sonic Adventure 2 becomes Finalhazard when he fuses himself with Space Colony Arc.
* PathOfGreatestResistance: Ever since Sonic Adventure introduced the Homing Attack, nearly all Sonic games since then have had paths identifiable (and accessible) only by finding a trail of stationary midair enemies. This is most commonly used to begin an expert path or for a shortcut; very rarely is it actually required.
* PatrickStewartSpeech: Delivered in the first game by [[spoiler:Tikal]] to make [[spoiler:Chaos]] turn face and in the second game by [[TheDitz Amy]] of all people to do the same thing to Shadow.
* PolygonCeiling: While these two games have a fanbase, the VideoGame3DLeap of Sonic was not universally praised, [[CriticalBacklash at least not by gamers]]. The ''Sonic Adventure'' series showed the first signs of ''Sonic'''s UnpleasableFanbase and BrokenBase.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: [=SA1=] introduced Chao to the series. Both games would use them as virtual pets that you could help grow using the animals and chaos drives you pick up from destroying {{Mooks}}. The system was improved in [=SA2=] with the addition of Hero and Dark chao, although the system would go through a complete overhaul for the [=GameCube=] versions.
* SceneryPorn
* SealedEvilInACan: Chaos in the first, Shadow in the second.
* ShiftingSandLand: The Sand Hill [[strike:snow]] sandboarding minigame in [=SA1=], and all of the stages surrounding and inside Eggman's Pyramid Base in [=SA2=].
* ShoutOut: [[NightsIntoDreams NiGHTS]] appears in the backgrounds, and the "flying" Chao is shaped like him.
* SugarBowl: All of the Chao Gardens, where the most pressing issue is an empty stomach; even the Dark Garden in [=SA2=], which looks like a haunted graveyard and has a pool of red liquid that may or may not be blood, is a pretty safe place for your cute little guys to reside.
* UndergroundLevel
* VideoGameCaringPotential: Chao. If you are nice enough to a Chao, it will have a big smile on its face and clap whenever your character picks it up. Beware, however, that being ''too'' nice to a Chao might result in the little guy getting a spoiled personality, making it throw tantrums even when only a little hungry. Balance is the key, but regardless, if the Chao is happy enough, it will reincarnate into a baby at the end of its life.
* VideoGameCrueltyPotential: Chao. You can hit it, throw it, put it in water and watch it flail if it doesn't know how to swim, make it starve, and all other sorts of things. Such abuse will result in the chao crying a fountain of tears, blowing a raspberry at you, or if it's aggressive enough, it'll charge at you and futiley throw punches. If the chao is more sad/angry than happy, it ''won't'' reincarnate at the end of its life. Omochao is another source of cruelty potential as mentioned above, but even Chao ''lovers'' like to torture the thing. [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman Then again, it is a robot that just looks like a Chao and is not an actual Chao]]...
** The second game takes this a step further: With Light and Dark Chao, ''who'' is treating the Chao good or bad matters as much as ''how'' they're treated. So treating your Chao nicely with Shadow, Eggman and Rouge will make them Dark as well as being cruel with the good guys will, and vice versa.

Just get to the goal (which is sometimes
This page has been split. If an animal capsule reminiscent of the Genesis games, sometimes a Chaos Emerald, occasionally just an end area)! Has 10 stages.
* '''Miles "Tails" Prower''' - Sonic's two-tailed fox buddy. All of Tails's stages pit
internal link led you against Sonic [[spoiler:(and later Robotnik)]] in a race here, feel free to the end of the stage.
When Chaos is released from the Emerald,
change it is naturally broken into pieces.
Has 5 stages, two of which are simply get
to point B, and the other three of which are get to point B and beat the boss waiting for you.
* [[spoiler:'''Super Sonic''' - Defeat Perfect Chaos!]]

* BareYourMidriff: Tikal.
How are we going to get
to the bridge?
-->'''Tails''': I hate it when he doesn't listen.
specific game.

''VideoGame/SonicAdventure''
* CrystalPrison
* EldritchAbomination: Chaos
* FiveManBand:
** TheHero: Sonic
** TheLancer: Knuckles
** TheSmartGuy: Tails
** TheBigGuy: Big the Cat
** TheChick: Amy Rose
** TheSixthRanger: E-102 Gamma
* FixedCamera: Made more adjustable in the DX version.
* FloatingContinent: Angel Island before the Master Emerald was shattered, and the third segment of Sonic's version of Windy Valley.
* FreeRotatingCamera: Not universal though.
* HongKongDub
Cue rage.
* {{Leitmotif}}
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: E-102 Gamma ultimately.
* MythologyGag: [[AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog "Ooh, I hate that Sonic!"]]
* OffscreenTeleportation: Zero in Amy's levels.
* PalmtreePanic: Emerald Coast.
* SealedGoodInACan: [[spoiler: Tikal, technically.]]
* TempleOfDoom: Lost World.
* ThatsNoMoon: The excavation team at the Mystic Ruins is flummoxed by a "mountain" which suddenly appeared from nowhere. Unbeknown to them (and the player, at first), it's actually Angel Island.
* TheVoiceless: Chaos.
* {{Video Game 3D Leap}}

* '''Action Stage''' (a.k.a. classic Sonic style) - Sonic/Shadow
* '''Shooting Stage''' (a la Gamma from [=SA1=]) - Tails/Eggman
* '''Hunting Stage''' - Knuckles/Rouge

* BadAssLabcoat: Gerald Robotnik.
* CameraScrew
* ClassyCatBurglar: Rouge the Bat.
* ColonyDrop: [[spoiler:The Last Story.]]
* DatingCatwoman: Knuckles and Rouge.
* EternalEngine: Trope Namer.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Eggman may want to use the Space Colony ARK to take over the Earth, but he balks at the idea of using its power to kill all humanity.
* EvilCounterpart: Shadow to Sonic.
* GiantSpaceFleaFromNowhere: King Boom Boo.
* HeroAntagonist: GUN
* KarmaHoudini: GUN.
* KickChick: Rouge, to contrast Knuckles' punches only attack style.
* KillSat: Space Colony ARK.
* KnightTemplar: GUN will do almost anything to preserve world order. They got better eventually. Also, Gerald believed his ColonyDrop against humanity to be "justice" for the Ark Disaster.
* KillTheCutie: [[spoiler: Poor Maria.]]
* LawyerFriendlyCameo: The President.
* PosthumousCharacter: Gerald Robotnik.
* ProductPlacement: Due to Sonic now wearing Soap Shoes, ads for them are all over the game.
* PromotedToUnlockable: Robotnik.
* TheRedSonja: Rouge for Knuckles.
* TheRival: Sonic/Shadow, Tails/Eggman, and Knuckles/Rouge.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: [[http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/sonic/images/4/41/Rouge_18.png Rouge's alternate outfit in 2P-Mode]].
* TheVamp: Rouge the Bat.
--> '''Sonic:''' Tails!
--> '''Eggman:''' Because ''you just TOLD me, fox boy!''
----
!!Both games provide examples of:
* CameraScrew
* ContinuityNod
* HeelFaceTurn
* SceneryPorn
* UndergroundLevel
