* The German Army started its love affair with the 'Kampfspaten' (literaly: combat spade) in WWI and never looked back. It was a used in that capacity in the interwar struggles (the Freicorps battles with Poland and the inter-German conflicts) and it was used that way in WW2. The Bundeswehr only got a bayonet in 1990 (!) when they inherented a number of AK bayonets that got covnerted to use for the new G36, but even today, and through all of the cold war, the primary melee weapon of the German soldier was the Kampfspaten: sharped on one side, saw tooth on the other, foldable and weighing in at less than one and a half kilogramm.

Can alternately be used as an easy way to render an enemy unconscious or as a lethal weapon depending on the user and media. Not to mention, it carries the advantage of being something inconspicuous in any home and useful if you need to [[DisposingOfABody get rid of a body.]] Indeed, if a gravedigger is presented as a combatant, he usually uses a shovel this way.

* In ''{{VideoGame/Verdun}}'', one of the many weapons you can get is a shovel. Considering that it's a game set in WorldWarOne, this isn't surprising. It also guarantees a OneHitKill.

* Part of the military training in JoeHaldeman’s ''Literature/TheForeverWar''. At the very beginning, one recruit isn’t impressed by the “eight silent ways to kill a man”: “‘(K)illing a man with a blow to the kidneys, from an entrenching tool (looks … kind of silly). I mean, when would you actually have only an entrenching tool, and no gun or knife? And why not just bash him over the head with it?’” [[note]]“‘He might have a helmet on.’”[[/note]]
