Closely related to Membership Token, but for ideas and habits. Named for an incident in the Old Testament, (making this trope Older than Feudalism) in which the good guys are sorted from the bad guys as they try to enter a walled city. One group says "Shibboleth," the other says "Sibboleth" and gets put to death. Shibboleths are a popular sorting tool for in-groups and out-groups. In any plot in which the Truth Will Prevail, the shibboleths will be the things that mark whatever in-group the Hero is supposed to overcome - for instance, wearing a particular color or having a particular accent. Other shibboleths can be shared references or in-jokes. When used in the real world, Shibboleth often implies that the referenced idea is ripe for a shake-up by a maverick genius. However, sympathetic groups can also use shibboleths to recognize a new arrival as One of Us, and mastering the right shibboleths can be useful in You've Got to Believe Me moments.
