The type of significance one character will have to another will depend on the nature of their rivalry. At best, the object of affection will be left with the impression that they're into the same things and see the suitor as someone (s)he can banter and have fun with. Or, acknowledge the other party as a WorthyOpponent who will provide a challenge, as "iron sharpens iron". At worst, the LoveInterest will hate the other person's guts (maybe because of bad IWasBeatenByAGirl sportsmanship from one side or the other), but that suitor will still prefer the negative attention to that love interest not even knowing they exist.

I commented-out the Pokemon entry because it needs specific examples.

* Anime/PokemonTheSeries has many fics that take this approach between canon rivals, helped by the fact that many of them have plenty of ShipTease among them. Some of the most popular ones are May/Drew, and Dawn/Kenny (or for some Dawn/Zoey) who compete directly in Pokémon Contests. Even some stories focused on Ash and Misty take the competitive approach to develop their relationship.

Added DiffLines:

* Literature/TheBlackStallion series has an example of this between racehorses, of all things. After Wintertime almost beats Black Minx in the Kentucky Derby, she becomes obsessed with him; every time they're in a race together, she ignores it (and her jockey's orders) to go over to the colt and run alongside him. When their owners discuss the situation, it turns out that Wintertime is little better, as he's reluctant to eat whenever Black Minx is stabled too far away. Eventually Alec decides to just go with it and buys Wintertime, letting the horses have a foal together.

Compare FriendlyRivalry or DefeatMeansFriendship for non-romantic examples, although they could evolve into this trope. Contrast FoeRomanticSubtext and DatingCatwoman for when the two are outright enemies.
