Trope changed to Holler Button, as per the Trope Repair thread. Making redirect due to Inbound Links.

When the action of a button in a video game is to call for someone, often via shouting. Usually it's used to call a name when the player's character is searching for someone. When this is plot related, more often than not the action of calling the character has no effect on the outcome of said searching.

Related to TauntButton. Not related to the [[FridayThe13th psychotic killer of the same name.]]

----
!!Examples:

* ''HeavyRain'' is the {{trope namer}}: in the game's prologue, [[TheHero Ethan Mars]] is looking for his son (named Jason). As you wander around the area you can press X to shout his name, but it won't do anything. None of the other people at the mall react to your yelling, and there are only about two voice clips of "JAAASSSOOONNN" that it uses.
** And then you can press X to shout the name of Jason's brother Shaun a little later in the game.
*** [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGekslFMhr0 Parodied here]] by LittleKuriboh.
*** Also parodied [[http://www.heavy.com/post/press-x-to-jason-the-game-4539 here]].
*** There's even [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_56257iS77A a song!]]
*** In the {{cutscene}}s in ''TheImpossibleQuiz'' Book Chapter 2, you can press X to Jason instead of S to Skip, if you like.
*** Someone even went so far as to make a "scripted weapon" for ''GarrysMod'' that does nothing more than let you Click to Jason.
** This has become a RealLife MemeticMutation. At PAX East 2010, when a large group of people were queuing up for a panel or something, one person would yell "JASON!", then another would yell, then another, and so on.
* In ''LuigisMansion'', the 'A' button causes Luigi to shout 'Mario!' Unusual for this trope, it works for the entire game.
** The A button is actually the "examine objects" button. If Luigi isn't positioned in front of an object he can examine when you press the button, shouting "Mario" is the default action which occurs.
** To add up to it, it exists about four different tones he can do it in, triggered mainly by his health levels, ranging from completely calm, slightly creeped, seriously scared and finally at near zero, panicking. This is entirely justified in that Luigi's health meter directly measured by how scared he is.
* In the beginning of ''SilentHillShatteredMemories'', the 'A' button causes Harry to shout 'Cheryl!'
** Interestingly for this trope, there's about ten or fifteen different inflections of ''Cheryl!'' Harry will raise his voice if he's outside and whisper it nervously if he's indoors. He'll also sometimes say ''Sweetie?'' instead.
* In ''ShadowOfTheColossus'' you can have Wander call for his horse, Agro.
** Likewise, in ''{{Ico}}'' by the same company, the titular boy can call out for Yorda, a girl he escorts around. Before you find her or if she's far out of range, he'll just make an odd yell. Unlike most examples, Yorda will react and come to you.
* Can be done in the ''DeadRising'' games to herd survivors. Oddly, it also works in Infinity Mode, where it is completely useless (all the survivors are [[EverythingTryingToKillYou trying to kill you]].)
* The up button in ''RedDeadRedemption'' calls your horse. As an {{Acceptable Break From Reality}}, you will always call a horse even if the one you legally own has died. [[GameBreaker This can be abused for a source of income.]] If you're walking slowly and near a neutral NPC, you can press B/Circle to Howdy (and occasionally tip your hat to them too)
** Or insult them if you have negative reputation.
* The {{Wii}} version of ''ABoyAndHisBlob'': Pressing down on the directional pad causes the main character to yell "BLOB!"
* In ''SamuraiWarriors 2'', Keiji can call for his horse, and so can any player character as long as they have a horse equipped in ''DynastyWarriors 5''. ''WarriorsOrochi'' expanded it so anybody could call a horse.
* In most of the ''HarvestMoon'' games, there are buttons to whistle for your dog or horse. In some games this also catches the attention of nearby {{NPC}}s.
* ''{{Fallout}} 3'', when you are first born, and when you are one years old you can make baby noises when trying to interact. [[spoiler: And when you are dying on the ground in the original end, all you can do is make wheezing gurgles.]]
* ''TheMaw'' has a button so the main character can yell "Maw!", usually to call him to you.
* If a Shadow Pokemon goes into Hyper Mode during battles in ''PokemonColosseum'', there is an option to use up a turn calling out to the Pokemon, which snaps it back to normal.
* You can make ''{{Okami}}'''s Amaterasu bark/yip with a button press. It does pretty much nothing beyond scaring non-threatening wildlife. And it's sooooo [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter cute]]! We are waiting to see if the same exists for Chibiterasu of ''{{Okamiden}}'', which will magnify this effect many times over.
* ''WindWaker'' featured partners and statues that would follow Link once he called out to 'em with a "c'mon!"
* The titular ''Boogerman'' could exclaim "BOOGER!" heroically with the press of a button. No point, just fun.
* ''TeamFortress2'': "MEDIC! MEEEDIIIIC!!" This causes anyone playing as the Medic to see a little speech bubble (which shows the player's approximate health) pointing in the general direction of the person calling for said Medic. There's also the "spy" voice command, which causes your character to call out the targeted class as a suspect - "I SEE SPY!" "Medic is Spy!" "That Spy's a double agent!" (The last robs us of the amusement of hearing "[[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment That Spy's a Spy!]]").
* The first ''KingdomHearts'' used the Triangle button to call over your friends to you (or, if you where in the air when pressing Triangle, make them jump). The second game his Triangle as the ActionCommands button instead, where it functions as this when escorting Minnie to the throne of Disney Castle.
* Hunting for Ames in ''MetalGearSolid2'' is done by pushing Triangle with the Directional Microphone equipped, causing Raiden to ask "You're Ames, aren't you?". There's just the one inflection, but if you spam it repeatedly Raiden's questions will get increasingly bored ("I bet you're not Ames either."). Perhaps {{lampshaded}} by the fact that there's a parrot who can learn to say the phrase if you spam it at it enough times.
* Much like the ''LuigisMansion'' example, if you look at another survivor (with the chat command) in both ''Left4Dead'' games, your character will call out the survivors name.
* In ''Final Fantasy XII'', there is a minigame of sorts where you must spread the word throughout the town of Bhujerba that your comrade Basch, contrary to popular belief, is still alive. By pressing a button, you could call attention to this by yelling out such things as "I'm Basch fon Ronsenberg of Dalmasca!" Your effectiveness in spreading this message would rise or fall upon your proximity to sympathetic or unsympathetic ears. ''Don't'' do this next to guards; the local guides, however, are particularly effective ([[spoiler:they're all members of LaResistance]]).
* ''EvilDead: Fistful of Boomstick'' had specific button for spiffy {{one liner}}s for Ash to shout.
* In ''{{Drakengard}} 2'', there's a button that calls your dragon down. What makes it fall under the trope is that Nowe shouts out ''"Legna!"'' when you hit it. (Caim would likely have done the same with Angelus [[TheVoiceless if he had vocal cords]].)
