Bob must wear some form of uniform which he finds repressive or simply dislikes, so he tries to act out and be an individual by wearing something distinctive. If he actually gets away with it, he may even inspire others to do the same. Often, Bob's change to his uniform comes from [[LoopholeAbuse finding a loophole]] -- The rulebook says "black shirt, shoes, socks, and pants," but says nothing about [[TheHilarityOfHats silly hats]] or [[SleevesAreForWimps tearing the sleeves off the shirts]].

This is often done in fiction to make things more visually interesting while still keeping a team feel. In Real Life, this is a key reason why novelty neckties are so popular. Big earrings, watches laden down with gadgets, mismatched socks, you get the idea. In the professional world, this is popular with men, who tend to have fewer options for "proper" attire than women.

This is often the case with {{Superhero Team Uniform}}s. CustomUniformOfSexy is also usually this, but with a specific {{Fanservice}} angle. Compare CustomUniform -- while that one is "I won't wear the real one, so I'll wear whatever I damn well please," this is "I'll wear the real one, but I'll make mine different than everyone else's." TransferStudentUniforms: "Technically I'm waiting for my new uniform to be made so I'll wear my old one, but this is symbolic of my [[NewTransferStudent status]]."

* [[DownplayedTrope Downplayed]] in ''Manga/AttackOnTitan''. The soldiers are provided pants and an overcoat (or green cloaks in the cases of Survey Corpsmen), but they're suppossed to provide their own shirts, leading to some variety in the uniforms.

** Perhaps as a reference to this, the "uniforms" of ''ComicBook/{{Nextwave}}'' were just a roughly knee-length trenchcoat (usually grey with black lapels) over whatever their normal outfits were. Or perhaps it was just Creator/WarrenEllis' love of trenchcoats. Either way, it worked.

* When Reep "Cham" Daggle decided to institute uniforms for his version of the ''ComicBook/LegionOfSuperHeroes'' (The 5-years-later/TMK Legion, for those keeping track), they lasted for all of nothing before the various members started wearing them in distinct ways, if they were wearing them at all.

* In ''ComicBook/{{WITCH}}'' and its animated counterparts the Guardians of Kandrakar wear custom outfits that are always green and violet (pink in the animated adaptation) and include leggings or socks striped in two different shades of green and identical wings (changed to a different design in the New Power version). A difference between the original outfits and both the New Power versions and those of the two known previous groups (their immediate predecessors and one of a few millennia ago) is that the first costumes all have an exposed stomach while the New Power ones and the other Guardians' don't (in the New Power only Taranee kept it, while the previous team had Yan Lin not exposing it and the team from a few millennia ago all had covered stomachs).
* Commonly seen throughout the ''Franchise/XMen'' franchise. Any given junior team such as ComicBook/NewMutants or ComicBook/GenerationX usually have a standard school uniform, but some may modify it to accommodate their powers, "sex it up", or discard it completely to signify leadership or lone wolf status.

* ''ComicStrip/ForBetterOrForWorse'' had April, who was going to an Ontario high school, have to buy certain clothes that fit exact specifications, but the list didn't mention socks, so she wore knee-high socks with rainbow stripes.

** Back in the '90s BestBuy used to require a more formal dress code in its corporate offices before compromising and allowing corporate staff to wear the same "Blue-Shirt" uniform that store staff were required to wear.

** [[NiceHat Multi-colored surgical caps]] are also popular, again to avoid even momentary confusion about who is who when everyone is gowned, gloved, and masked and there might be a dozen people on the team for a complicated procedure.

*** Ryu Commander has gold trim, a BadassLongcoat, armored shoulders, and a symmetrical ChestInsignia, unlike the asymmetrical ones the other rangers have, to reflect that he fills the traditional SixthRanger role. *** The same red stripe pattern appears again in ''Series/TheHighSchoolHeroes'' on the ranger's ties with the red ranger again getting a yellow stripe instead. Unusually, the sixth member doesn't have a non-standard suit.

* In the first season of ''Series/Space1999'' the crew of Moonbase Alpha all wore the same beige uniform, the only difference between them being the colour of one sleeve, denoting their department. The only exceptions were Koenig's, which had a round collar in the command colour of black; Bergman's, which had no sleeve colour, befitting his status as an OmnidisciplinaryScientist, and the sash worn by security guards. In the second season, the producers made an attempt to 'humanise' the characters by giving them jackets to wear over their tunics. The jackets, which came in several designs and colours, were decorated with the insignia and patches of various scientific organisations and space agencies. Although the main characters wore the same jackets fairly consistently, others were passed around amongst the supporting cast. Koenig also got to wear a sleeveless waistcoat on one occasion and female Alphans now had the option of wearing skirts. The most non-uniform uniform worn by any Alphan was that seen on a one episode character played by Patrick Mower. It not only featured a camouflage-patterned jacket but a stetson hat and cowboy boots!

** ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamTheWitchFromMercury'' has most of the cast in military school uniforms: the Asticassia uniform being an apparently-unisex dark blue-green jacket and shorts with red trim. However, students are shown to have a fair bit of freedom in terms of how they wear the uniform, particularly among the more important students, and the cut of the uniform, the length of the shorts, whether the jacket is worn open or closed, what is worn under the jacket, what is worn ''over'' the jacket in some cases, and what is worn for socks or shoes can all vary from person to person. Shaddiq takes this to particular extremes; the only part of the standard uniform that he wears is the jacket, with the rest of his outfit unique to him.

* Late in ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing'', when the five Gundam Pilots finally start working as a team, they start wearing matching {{Latex Space Suit}}s, mostly black with white and red trim and different colored patches on the chests and arms: [[HitmanWithAHeart Heero]], [[TheHeart Quatre]], and [[ArrogantKungFuGuy Wu Fei]] have a tan-brown while [[TheLancer Duo]] and [[TheStoic Trowa]] have blue. There doesn't seem to be any real reason behind this, either in terms of "coding" or style.

** Series/HimitsuSentaiGorenger'': The pink ranger and the red ranger both have several differences between them and the other three rangers. Pink and red both wear white gloves and boots instead of black ones. Pink has a red visor instead of a black one and the number on the front of the helmet and the stripes on the back are red instead of white. Her helmet also includes earrings which can be used as bombs. The red ranger has a blue visor and the number on his helmet is yellow and has wings to show that he is the leader. He also has a yellow stripe on his chest while everyone else has a different number of red stripes and he wears a gun holster on one leg and he also has a taller collar and the silver line on the front of the suit goes all the way up to his visor instead of stopping at the neck like the others.

** This gets ramped up in ''Series/UchuSentaiKyuranger'', where out of team of around a dozen heroes, nearly ''everyone'' gets extra personalization on their suits that would normally be reserved for a Sixth.

*** Black and Gold are robotic and sport an armored look.

The female of the team, Miss America, also has hair on her helmet and skin-colored legs.

** ''Series/GoseiSentaiDairanger'': Even in the show he originally came from, the white SixthRanger had a very different suit design. His suit switches several of the colors around and replaces the white vest the other ranger wear with a black and gold chest armor piece with a different insignia that is larger and in middle of the chest instead of on the left side.

** ''Series/DenjiSentaiMegaranger'' and ''Series/PowerRangersInSpace'' is a rare case of a SixthRanger averting the usual degree of customization, with minimal changes to the suit design and mostly just color changes and additional highlights.

*** The male black/grey Ranger is more armored and has red highlights and his helmet has dog ears.

*** One of the movies showed an alternate reality with a slightly different version of the Go-Busters who all had black visors instead of shiny metallic ones, except for the silver ranger, whose appearance is unchanged because he is the only member who retains memories of the original timeline. The same alternate team had a temporary black member whose suit included a ScarfOfAsskicking.

*** Along with the beefed-up excursion jackets, Kirk wears an additional field vest beneath his jacket, over his duty undershirt. Notably, he's the only one in the landing party wearing this variant, as when we see [=McCoy=] and Saavik remove their jackets, they're not wearing vests.

** Next Generation had Troi, who for the majority of the show wore what appeared to be a nonstandard outfit. She doesn't begin wearing uniforms until late in the show's run when a visiting Captain complains about it and only returns to her counselling outfits a few years later.

** There was also the occasional extra wearing a miniskirt uniform instead of the usual two-piece uniform with trousers.

** B'elanna Torres, USS Voyager's Chief Engineer, would occasionally wear a long coat over her uniform, tailored with a chest pocket full of unidentifiable tools. Off screen, the reason for this was to disguise Roxann Dawson's pregnancy.

** ''Film/StarTrekFirstContact'' introduces a broad change in uniform design for the TNG-era. This included a vest -- similar to the vests Kirk wore -- meant to be worn over the division-color turtleneck in place of the standard duty over-shirt. Only three officers are ever seen wearing this vest: Picard, [[Series/StarTrekDeepSpaceNine Sisko]], and someone impersonating a high-level official from Starfleet Internal Affairs.

* All five ''Anime/{{Smile Pretty Cure}}s'' wear some kind of variation on their school's uniform, complete with color-coded ties and (for the most part) vests.

** Knight of Six Anya has the most [[AgeInappropriateDress different]] uniform: the shirt covers only the breast-area and the jacket is instead sleeveless, backless ''and'' open in the front to show the BareYourMidriff. She uses shorts and thigh-high pink stockings with garters. Her cape is pink.

Both forms have a x-shaped visor and change around some of the colors to gold and silver and change a few other minor details. His Lupin X form has an armored torso and does not have a cape, while his Patren X form wears a BadassLongcoat.

*** A gold ranger who only appeared during an imaginary sequence used a recolored version of the silver suit with the googles lowered over the eyes and additionally wore a scarf and had a chest piece similar to what the other rangers have in their SuperMode.
*** The blue and pink rangers also have a solid line in the middle of the stripe on their chests while the rest of the rangers have a broken one.
** ''Series/KikaiSentaiZenkaiger'' takes this to such an extreme that it becomes an aversion, in that the suits can no longer be said to be "uniform" in the first place. The Zenkaigers each have similar belt buckles and crests on their foreheads, but that's all. Four of the Zenkaigers look like miniature versions of the mechs from previous seasons, while the leader, Zenkaizer, looks similar to a multicolored [[Series/HimitsuSentaiGorenger Akaranger with some features of the Varidorin]]. And the SixthRanger Twokaizer looks like a gold [[Series/KaizokuSentaiGokaiger Gokaiger based on the Gokaioh]]. And the evil Ranger Staceasar looks like a purple knockoff of Zenkaizer but with a helmet and scarf similar to [[Series/BattleFeverJ Battle Japan]].
** ''Series/AvataroSentaiDonbrothers'' goes the same route as ''Kyuranger'', giving each Ranger their own customization. The Red Ranger has a gear-shaped crest sticking out of the back of the helmet like a topknot and a large pink peach symbol on his helmet unlike the rest of the Rangers, who have a much smaller gold one. The Yellow Ranger has shoulder spikes. The Blue Ranger who is based on a Japanese macaque is bulkier than the other rangers and has a vest that exposes his abs, fur covered arms, and a red patch on his butt. The Pink Ranger has wings and super-long legs that end in boots resembling talons. The Black Ranger is smaller than the rest of the Rangers, has cartoony body proportions, and has canine features including a tail. When the rangers change into their SuperMode they become even less uniform, with pink and black no longer even being humanoid in shape. The SixthRanger of the team has an almost entirely different suit style and doesn't even wear the same style of belt as the other rangers and doesn't even wear the team's peach logo anywhere. The only similarities are having a similar visor and mouth plate style. The purple ranger who doesn't join the team until the last episode has a red visor and a black headband and replaces the peach symbol with a shark. He also has a slightly different chest piece that has a fishnet pattern around the neck.

** ''Series/BakuryuuSentaiAbaranger'' and ''Series/PowerRangersDinoThunder'': The Black Ranger has slightly more armor, more gold on his suit, and a more detailed diamond pattern. The evil White Ranger has a red visor instead of a black one, body armor, no ChestInsignia, a different belt buckle, different boots, and his suit replaces the diamond pattern the other rangers have with a spikier triangle pattern that covers more of the suit.
** ''Series/TokusouSentaiDekaranger'' and ''Series/PowerRangersSPD'': Had two regularly appearing {{Sixth Ranger}}s and three or two extras and they are all very different from each other and the rest of the Rangers. The male white Ranger is similar to the other Rangers but the number on his suit is in Roman numerals (VI) and his suit turns the silver parts gold and some of the black parts blue. The male black/grey Ranger is more armored and has red highlights and his helmet has dog ears. The female white/orange Ranger looks almost nothing like the other rangers aside from still having the same badges on the chest and helmet. Her suit has body armor, no number, and a helmet shape that vaguely suggests wings or cat ears. Also, unlike most of the Rangers her suit is nearly symmetrical. The female blue/grey blue Ranger also has a nearly symmetrical suit, no obvious chest number, a differently shaped helmet with a fancier version of the helmet badge, and has gold where the main Rangers have silver. The gold ranger, who was only briefly seen in one movie, is actually very similar to the main rangers but with an X for the chest number and a slightly different helmet.

** ''Series/JukenSentaiGekiranger'' and ''Series/PowerRangersJungleFury'': The three core rangers are patterned like the stripes or spots of different big cats. The wolf-themed violet ranger has armor on his arms and legs, a different suit style, and a more animalistic helmet style with actual ears instead of just the vague suggestion of them. The rhino-themed white ranger also has a different suit style with orange highlights, a different ChestInsignia located on one side instead of the middle, and a belt.
** ''Series/EngineSentaiGoOnger'' and ''Series/PowerRangersRPM'': The Black and Green Rangers have gold parts where Red, Blue, and Yellow have black; indicating them as a slightly different sub-team (even though the five are usually treated as a single group). The Gold and Silver Rangers have differently designed helmets with crests, red highlights, and protrusions on the forearms. The arms, legs, and torsos of their suits are also mostly black. The chests have their own insignia instead of a stylized number like the other rangers, and the "seat belts" are X-shaped instead of V-shaped.

** ''Series/TokumeiSentaiGoBusters'' and ''Series/PowerRangersBeastMorphers'': The gold and silver rangers have asymmetrical chest patterns that are also on opposite sides for each of them. They also both have armor that the other Rangers don't have, but Gold has leg and shoulder armor while Silver has armored arms and bigger shoulder armor. The parts of the chests that are silver on the other Rangers are black. A few parts of the Gold Ranger's suit that are black on the core Rangers are silver. And several parts of the Silver Ranger's suit that are silver on the Gold Ranger are metallic blue instead and he also has a metallic blue visor instead of a visor matching his main color. The gold suit, which was the primary SixthRanger of the season, had blue highlights instead of yellow ones and highlights in more places and his personal insignia on a blue triangle instead of the yellow triangle, and the rest of the yellow triangles on the suits were removed, and one of the silver stripes was replaced with a lightning bolt shape. He also had two shoulder pads instead of only one and his had bigger spikes. And his SuperMode gives him gold spikes on his arm instead of silver ones. The grey and cyan suits both replaced the yellow parts of the suit with a dull gold or brass color. The violet suit was completely standard. The silver suit and navy suit turned all of the normally silver parts of the suits gold. The navy suit also replaced most of the yellow parts of the suit with silver except for the emblem and had a fin on the shoulder pad instead of spikes. When the navy suit was being used by a villain, it had dark red arms and red highlights on the helmet, and also added two more gold fins to the right arm in the same places where the six main suits got spikes in their SuperMode.
** ''Series/ResshaSentaiToQger'': The SixthRanger has black gloves and boots instead of white ones and a slightly different helmet style. His chest number is in the middle of the chest instead of to one side. The chest number is also surrounded by a yellow and black circle instead of a white and black one and doesn't have more lines coming off of it. He also wears yellow and black suspenders and a yellow and black belt instead of a silver belt. Interestingly, when Right briefly uses the orange suit in the last episode the gloves and boots are white instead (This might be because the orange suit's regular user is a reformed shadow). The epilogue movie adds a seventh ranger who uses the same helmet as the sixth but otherwise looks the same as the core rangers except for also having his chest number in the center with six lines coming off of it instead of four. The red ranger of the team also has a noticeably different helmet than the rest of the rangers because all the other rangers are based on modern trains while red is based on a steam engine.

** ''Series/ShurikenSentaiNinninger'' The gold ranger's helmet looks like he is wearing a cowboy hat, he wears a poncho instead of a sash, and he wears a different belt. The arms of his suit are also blue. The series also has multiple red rangers with the only thing distinguishing them being that the extra red rangers wear non-standard sashes.
** ''Series/DoubutsuSentaiZyuohger'': The primary SixthRanger of the season is based on three animals instead of one and so has his suit split into three colors. Gold on the right side, silver on the left, and black in the middle, divided in a way that makes it look like he is wearing a gold and silver vest over a black suit. He also flips the black and white on the suit's gloves and boots. He also wears a white belt instead of a silver one and has pointy shoulders. The orange ranger is just a recolored version of the red ranger with the visor and chest design turned blue and the black parts of the boots and gloves turned gold. The original red ranger, whose abilities were later passed to the current one as an alternate form, has long coattails with the chest design stretching all the way down one of the tails, and also has pointy shoulders and a yellow collar.

The Red Ranger has a gear-shaped crest sticking out of the back of the helmet like a topknot and a large pink peach symbol on his helmet unlike the rest of the Rangers, who have a much smaller gold one. The Yellow Ranger has shoulder spikes. The Blue Ranger who is based on a Japanese macaque is bulkier than the other rangers and has a vest that exposes his abs, fur covered arms, and a red patch on his butt. The Pink Ranger has wings and super-long legs that end in boots resembling talons. The Black Ranger is smaller than the rest of the Rangers, has cartoony body proportions, and has canine features including a tail. When the rangers change into their SuperMode they become even less uniform, with pink and black no longer even being humanoid in shape. The SixthRanger of the team has an almost entirely different suit style and doesn't even wear the same style of belt as the other rangers and doesn't even wear the team's peach logo anywhere. The only similarities are having a similar visor and mouth plate style.

* For a short time in the nineties, Comicbook/TheAvengers wore brown leather jackets with the Avengers' logo on the shoulders. This gave the team a uniformed look while maintaining their individual identities.

* When Reep "Cham" Daggle decided to institute uniforms for his version of the ''Comicbook/LegionOfSuperHeroes'' (The 5-years-later/TMK Legion, for those keeping track), they lasted for all of nothing before the various members started wearing them in distinct ways, if they were wearing them at all.

** In ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy'', the members of the team wear red uniforms, but each one is customized in some way. Gamora's has gloves and a lower neckline, Rocket Raccoon's has no gloves or shoes, while Drax's has no shirt.

** When the first film's uniforms proved uncomfortable and unpopular among the cast (let alone unpopular among much of the fanbase), new uniforms befitting ''Film/StarTrekIITheWrathOfKhan'' director Creator/NicholasMeyer's vision of ''Literature/HoratioHornblower'' [[RecycledInSpace in Space]] were commissioned. Despite the more militaristic "Monster Maroons", designer Robert Fletcher still kept the idea of customizable uniforms for mission-specific needs, as well as casual variants.

** Even the original ''X-Men'' movies invoked this trope. The team wore black leather bodysuits with slight variations. (ComicBook/{{Cyclops}}' visor was incorporated into his, Beast's costume was modified for his bulky frame, Comicbook/{{Storm}} had a cape attached, etc.). Also, some characters have subtle accents in different colors (such as yellow for Wolverine, white for Iceman, and pink for Shadowcat).

* Similar to Touken Ranbu, in ''VideoGame/{{Bungo to Alchemist}}'', authors who have literary factions will likely dress in matching outfits or wear matching accessories but still add unique alterations. The key word is ''likely'', as this game's dress code rule is laxer -– there are cases of authors' not dressing in their faction's uniform (Tanizaki Jun'ichirō), wearing two uniforms at the same time (Kitahara Hakushū) and some factions' not having uniforms at all (Leisure, Neo-Aesthetic and any foreign author, whose "factions" are not literary schools at all, but their countries).

* The original ''Videogame/PlanetSide'' had each of the three empires using standard-issue uniforms for the different armor types, though high battlerank players had different color schemes, and gaining Command Ranks would add small flairs to the armor such as a radio backpack and shin guards. ''Planetside 2'' again gives each class on each empire a standard uniform, but features far more customization courtesy of RevenueEnhancingDevices; players can purchase nonfunctional extra armor, camouflaging (ranging from actual camo to iridescent neon red "camo"), decals, and so on.
