* This is PlayedForDrama in ''ComicBook/{{Maus}}''. Art Spiegelman is horrified to realize that his father Vladek, a Jewish Holocaust survivor and the subject of the biography, is [[RacistGrandpa racist against black people]], to the point that when he sees a black hitchhiker, he immediately declares that the hitchhiker is a thief. Art calls him out for this, but Vladek says that [[MoralMyopia it's okay to be racist against black people, but not Jews]]. When Art shares the story with his therapist (himself a Holocaust survivor), his therapist explains, with a good deal of sadness, that going through hardship doesn't automatically cause people to learn lessons. Vladek didn't survive the Holocaust because he learned a valuable lesson about the folly of man's inhumanity to man, he survived because he was lucky. The idea that [[SufferingBuildsCharacter his suffering made him a better person may be comforting]], but that's because the truth--that all the horrors of the Holocaust happened for no good reason and had no good outcomes, and the good people lived and died no differently to the bad--is just too depressing to fathom.

* This trope PlayedForLaughs is a running gag in the Literature/SweetPickles series of kids' books:
** After spending the entire book blaming everyone else for her missing shoe and for all the problems that resulted from it, Alligator finds that she left it in the wrong place herself. She immediately blames the neighbor who pointed this out to her.
** Goose's house and yard are a huge mess because she spends all her time goofing off and never picks up after herself. She has decided to spend the day "taking it easy" and ignoring all the things that need to be done. After ignoring multiple other problems, she is forced to actually take time to fix a problem before it gets worse. Rather than recognizing she should have been doing so all along, she's disappointed to have not gotten to spend the day taking it easy and vows to take it easy tomorrow, instead.
** Yak is so busy chattering and not listening to anyone else that he wrecks the taxi he is driving, despite Rabbit warning him several times about a road obstruction. He's oblivious as to why Rabbit is irritated and keeps chattering away to the tow truck driver.
** Rabbit is stressing himself out by overscheduling himself. His friends finally convince him that he needs to rest... which he will do, just as soon as he makes up a specific schedule for resting.

* ''Fanfic/Digimon02TheStoryWeNeverTold'': Despite how much Cody admires his grandfather, he completely ignores how he's constantly encouraging him to keep an open mind, especially when it comes to the matter of [[TheAtoner Ken]]. No matter how much evidence mounts that the former Digimon Emperor has truly changed, or how willing others are to grant him the benefit of the doubt, Cody refuses to do so himself.

* ''Fanfic/TheWildHorseThesis'': Unlike the other fiancées, Shampoo never grasps the idea that Ranma doesn't like her because the possessive way she treats him and her violent efforts to get rid of any rivals eliminates any attraction he might have felt. She even attempts to attack Rei and Asuka the moment she gets the chance.

* In ''Fanfic/TheChosenSix'', the Malfoys are forced to acknowledge as early as Draco's first year that their attitude towards Draco has left him with an inflated sense of his own importance and ability. Despite Narcissa acknowledging that Lucius stepping in won't help Draco learn anything, Draco himself continues to blame others for his shortcomings rather than accept that he made his own mistakes.

* ''Fanfic/CommonSense'': Damien abandoned Charmander for being "weak"; upon seeing that the little fire lizard was stronger than he'd thought, he tried to take him back, only to be violently rejected. Rather than learning anything from this, Damien's grown even ''more'' abusive since then, [[DeniedFoodAsPunishment starving]] and [[CorporalPunishment beating]] his pokémon whenever they don't meet his standards. [[spoiler:James sees this and robs him of all his pokémon.]]
* ''Fanfic/VillainOfYourOwnStory'': After learning about how the Ladybug Earrings and Black Cat Ring can be combined to MakeAWish, Alya decides that'd be the ''perfect'' way to learn Hawkmoth's secret identity, blowing off Marinette's warnings that RealityWarpingIsNotAToy. This creates an AlternateUniverse where ''Alya'' was Hawkmoth all along, and [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor nothing turned out the way she expected]]. So Alya decides that her best course of action is to keep "playing" the villain, get the Earrings and Ring again, and make ''another'' Wish -- because ''clearly'' something went wrong with the first one, and the best way to fix it is to try again!
