* ''WesternAnimation/BlueEyeSamurai''. Taigen finds Mizu seriously wounded after her battle with the Four Fangs, but forgoes the temptation to kill her then and there. When she wakes up he's drawing up a contract for their next duel, and when she puts a sword to his throat he points out that he could have killed her easily before. Mizu is unimpressed; being obsessed with her own RoaringRampageOfRevenge, she says that Taigen is just playing at revenge, otherwise he would have killed her without all this stuffing about.

* In the ''Heavensward'' expansion of ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV'', there's two characters who embody this mentality on the dragon side of the Dragonsong War.
** Several conversations with Hraesvelgr make it clear that [[IGaveMyWord his promise to Shiva that he would never take another life from mankind]] is all that's stopping him from tearing the heroes asunder. Especially once someone claims to know more about Shiva than he does. Hraesvelgr even says that his patience is getting close to its limit, and testing him any further is likely to prove fatal.
** Estinien has a EurekaMoment when he realizes the motivations of the BigBad boil down to something like this. [[spoiler:Between ''A Realm Reborn'' and ''Heavensward'', the barrier surrounding Ishgard falls thanks to Lady Iceheart and her heretics. So Nidhogg could attack Ishgard at any time and wipe them out, yet he doesn't. When the other characters wonder what Nidhogg is waiting for, Estinien realizes that Nidhogg isn't going to wipe them out; his vengeance is keeping Ishgard locked in a ForeverWar so that they will never know peace and comfort. Hraesvelgr eventually confirms outright that this is what Nidhogg's ultimate goal is, which shifts the mood of how to deal with Nidhogg considerably.]]

* A non-lethal version of this is invoked in the ''Franchise/PowerRangers'' fic "[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/48140428/ Thunderstruck]]" when Billy Cranston (the original Blue Ranger) affirms that he could have theoretically shut down the [[Series/PowerRangersOperationOverdrive Operation Overdrive team]] and their access to the Morphin Grid any time he wanted, as he maintains a degree of access to the Grid using Zordon's technology to ensure that nobody tries to harness that power for dangerous reasons.
