* ZigZagged by TokenEvilTeammate Shadowheart in VideoGame/BaldursGateIII. She's a raven-haired young woman who was indoctrinated into the ReligionOfEvil surrounding the GodOfDarkness Shar at a young age, and as a result of this she's a brooding, cynical, DefrostingIceQueen. However, despite her DarkAndTroubledPast she's ultimately a JerkWithAHeartOfGold and is shown to have more of a PerkyGoth personality once you get to know her.

* Severus Snape from Literature/HarryPotter is the very meaning of this trope. This is a man who just wanted to be loved, but fate denied him on numerous occasions. Never mind that people neglected and bullied him in his youth, only for his true love, to date and later marry his most egregious bully. In his own way, Snape cared for Harry, because he was the only thing left of his mother that remains.

* Played slightly more realistically in Series/TheFall. Teenager Katie has been traumatized by the death of her father, and falls in love/lust with Paul, which leads to her becoming even more obsessed after she learns he's a serial killer. In Series 2, she starts dressing far more gothically, wearing all black, and fetishizing violence and death. However, this is pretty clearly self-aware posturing on her part.

The Goth subculture, the emo subculture, and other related subcultures originated from a genre of music. The goth subculture started with fans of "gothic rock", a variation on punk music. * Series/AmericanHorrorStoryMurderHouse: Both teenagers Tate and Violet are modelled quite purposefully on the goth/emo subcultures. Violet was actually initially written as a goth, and Tate often dresses in quite a goth style, but also both have distinct crossover with emo culture, such as listening to sad music (Music/KurtCobain is a favorite), chain-smoking, and both are shown being fascinated (rather than scared) of the ghosts in the house. Both are self-harmers, and Violet is a depressed teenager who , while Tate is from a combination of MommyIssues and the OedipusComplex.
