** [[UsefulNotes/{{Houston}} Greater Houston]] during Hurricane Rita, before the storm moved north, due to the largest mass movement of civilians during peacetime. Any hurricane will result in a portion of the population moving to higher ground, helping to fulfill this trope for localized areas, but after seeing what happened to New Orleans the Houstonians understandably wanted to avoid it. To this day local citizens are still divided on whether to refer to 'Texodus' as an understandable precaution, a dry run for the next Cat 4/5, a panic-induced fiasco, or a combination of all of the above.

To this day local citizens are still divided on whether to refer to 'Texodus' as an understandable precaution, a dry run for the next Cat 4/5, a panic-induced fiasco, or a combination of all of the above. This was revisited during the Hurricane Harvey crisis of 2017, where torrential rain, power grid failure, and a myriad of other problems led to many Texas cities being flooded-out and barren of life. A similar power grid failure in 2021 during a period of extreme cold repeated the pattern--empty streets, not a soul visible anywhere--just with less water and ''much'' more ice.

* Croatian tale "Literature/{{Reygoch}}" has the city of Legen (translated as "Frosten"), a massive five-gated magical stone city situated in the centre of a vast and remote snowy plain. While exploring the city, Curlylocks notes it is terribly cold and she cannot see anything but crumbling walls, or hear anything except for the whistling of the wind and the cracking of frozen stones. Finally she runs into Reygoch, a giant who has been living alone in Frosten for a thousand years, counting the stones of the city. Legen (as well known as Ledan, meaning "frozen"), can be found in many Croatian folk-tales and ballads.

* ''Literature/LumbanicoTheCubicPlanet'': As exploring the Arista's mountains, the protagonist trio find a beautiful city constructed of blue stone...and completely quiet and abandoned, all signs suggesting that its inhabitants fled abruptly many centuries ago. Later, the kids learn the city used to be known as Astrópolis, "the Fallen Star", and used to be the Arista's capital city. However, the Astropolitans fled the city when a group of refugees of the outer lands travelled through the area. Shortly after, the mountain passes were blocked by an earthquake, and the Aristans were unable to return or find again their city. Seven hundred years later, many people believed Astrópolis to be only a legend.

* Narak from ''Literature/TheStormlightArchive'' is an unusually degraded example of this trope. It used to be the capital of Natanatan, one of the Ten Silver Kingdoms, but it was depopulated during the Last Desolation, and millennia of weathering has so degraded it that only the listeners even recognize that it used to ''be'' a city. Everyone else just mistakes it for oddly shaped rock formations.
