* In ''OnePiece'' it turns out Portgas D. Ace took the last name of his mother [[spoiler: to honor her for extending her pregnancy at the cost of her own life so as to prevent him from being associated with his father Gol D. Roger. Due to having been told from a young age that his father was a demon and any children he might have had deserved to die for his crimes, Ace hated his blood father and preferred to honor his mother instead.]]

Yes, even the toughest BadAss around can still have a soft spot for dear old Mom. Sure, you have killed scores of men using only your right thigh, a roll of twine, and pure gumption, but ''she'' held you for nine months and took care of you when you were sick!

Fixing up some examples. Moved some probable non-examples to discussion. Drop the Trope Namer bit: it is stock phrase and assigning a trope namer adds little to the concept.

A subtrope of PetTheDog, this is when a tough or intimidating character is made more endearing via a loving relationship with their mother. It's usually just used for a quick punchline, but occasionally the concept is a bit more fleshed-out.

[[TropeNamer Named]] after [[RussellCrowe Ben Wade]]'s line in the remake of ''[=~3:10 to Yuma~=]''.

* This concept is explored some in ''YuYuHakusho'' when Kurama, a fox-spirit, possessed the body of a human baby to continue his existence after being killed. He planned to leave and continue his criminal ways once he regained his demonic powers, but found that he had come to love his human mother (Shiori) too much to abandon her, and was even willing to give up his life to save her from an illness.
** [[PapaWolf He's willing to give up your life, too]], if you threaten her safety in any way.
* Hehhehheh. HayaoMiyazaki's ''{{Castle in the Sky}}'': Mother lovin' sky pirates. A whole band of them.
** And the ''mother'' is the most BadAss of all!
* Lelouch Lamperouge aka Lelouch Vi Brittania, the MagnificentBastard from ''CodeGeass'', has as one of his motives to uncover the truth behind the ''really'' messy death of Marianne "The Flash" Lamperouge aka Marianne Vi Britannia, his beloved mother. [[spoiler: Episode 21 of the second season subverts this... because Marianne was actually ''not'' the loving, gentle mother he remembered, but a KnightTemplarParent.]]
** Also, the [[ActionGirl Bad Chick]] Kallen finds a soft spot for her racially discriminated against, drug-addicted mother. A happy life with her becomes her motivation for the rebellion (well, second only to the massive BodyguardCrush).
* It's worth noting that in ''JojosBizarreAdventure'', Jotaro travels all the way to Egypt, enduring constant attacks by enemy Stand users, and then faces off with a time-stopping vampire, all to save his mother. Jotaro's JerkWithAHeartOfGold personality prevents him from ever really admitting that he loves his mother, but his actions speak volumes to her, as she has always has had faith in his inner kindness, and in the end, she was right.
** Dio Brando himself arguably applies to this trope. As it's shown in Part 1 that Dio Brando harbors a fierce anger towards his father because according to Dio in his own words he "made mother suffer". More likely, his mother would be his only MoralityPet, thus when she died, Dio is free to become a CompleteMonster extraordinary, which he does with gusto.
* Female version in ''InuYasha''. Youkai leaderess Abi-hime's main motivation to strike a deal with BigBad Naraku was to get the human blood she needed to save the life of her mother, Queen Tekkei, who was not only old but also was poisoned after defeating and eating an ogre. Granted, she's not portrayed as sympathetic and the mother is a giant bird youkai, but Abi's devotion to her mother is still noticeable.
** Not to mention Inu-Yasha himself has some serious mommy issues. You do NOT insult the late Princess Izayoi to his face and expect to live (unless you're Sesshoumaru or something).
*** No, but Sesshoumaru does end up getting his arm cut off. That was one of only ''two'' times Inuyasha won a clean victory against him, the second being after a very successful and critically accurate use of the Wind Scar.

* The entire reason the homonculus do what they do in ''FullmetalAlchemist'' is because they love their father. Of course Father being a CompleteMonster just uses them for his goal, as their love makes them loyal to the end. Pride finally figures out that it was [[spoiler:Mrs. Bradley]] who was the person that was giving him the love that they crave.
** Of course, Envy mostly liked the power and chances to be an asshole that came with working for Father, Lust seems to have shared that as well as just being in the habit of living her life the way she did, Gluttony was a moron and also had a closer relationship with Lust than with Father (though he did worry about making Father mad when he ate Ed), Wrath's whole life and identity depended on Father's conspiracy and he took pride in what he was, and Greed saw right through the old man and scarpered. Twice. Before Greelin's HeelFaceTurn he did what Father said on about the same terms Lust had. Only Pride showed much sign of a parent complex.
** Since he's the oldest and the most like Father, it's quite possible Beard Guy unloaded his remaining parent issues re: Hohenheim onto him back at the beginning, since the old pseudo-affection seems to have totally vanished by the modern day.
** In the same series, an argument could be made for this in the relationship between Roy and Madame Christmas.
* ''{{Death Note}}'''s Teru Mikami is a notable inversion- he sees his mother as almost condoning the actions of evildoers by telling him that some things cannot be changed. When she is killed, he inwardly celebrates the death.
** Well, the manga states that he cried initially, so he ''was'' upset about her demise at one point. Light himself plays this straight, demonstrating love for his parents and sister long after he sinks to the point where he'd kill absolutely anyone else without a second thought.
*** Well, sorta. [[spoiler:When Sayu was kidnapped, he was open to the possibility of killing her if he thought he had to, even if he didn't like the idea.]]
*** In fact, though he didn't ''like'' the idea, his position in the first volume was already 'if I'm found out...Kira will have to kill his own family.' [[spoiler: He takes Souichiro's death lightly, too; his main concern at the time is convincing his dad to kill Mello before he dies, and he freaks over this failing and blames it on being upset about his dad dying.]]
*** In the live-action movies, he [[spoiler: actually does attempt to kill his father, not knowing that the Death Note he's using at the time is a fake.]]

Born horribly deformed, his father, the Czar of Russia, rejected him while the Czarina harbored him and paid for his education overseas. He hates his father and takes care of him at the end of the man's life only because Marius told him to do it. He interacts with the Marquis in a series of mood swings from cloying sweetness to brat-tastic rages, foists him on Louis half the time, and has Louis kill him when the slaves revolt because it's the most expedient thing to do. Not exactly a loving relationship.
