--> "Who the fuck are you?"
--> "Death."

DeathWish is a series of movies starring CharlesBronson as architect-gone-vigilante Paul Kersey. After his family gets killed in the beginning of the first movie the TechnicalPacifist and conscientious objector Kersey becomes a badass vigilante thanks to the gun training he enjoyed as a kid, because his father was a gun nut. After receiving a gun as a gift from a Arizonan client, all hell breaks loose. The cops find out who the mysterious vigilante is, but instead of arresting him on sight, they decide to let him run, in order to not let the media turn him into a hero/martyr. The four sequels follow the same pattern, except for the murdered family of course.

The original film was denounced by critics as advocating vigilantism and unlimited punishment to criminals, but it was seen as echoing a growing mood in the United States as crime rose during the 1970s.

The DeathWish series includes the following movies
* Death Wish (1974)
* Death Wish II (1982)
* Death Wish 3 (1985)
* Death Wish 4: The Crackdown (1987)
* Death Wish V: The Face of Death (1994)

There also is a remake in plans, due to be released sometime in 2011.

----
!!Tropes associated with the Death Wish series:

* Badass: Paul. By the series end he's a BadassGrandpa too.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Paul is a pacifist, but he learned to use guns in his younger age (and it shows).
* CaliforniaDoubling: Death Wish 3 takes place in New York, but was filmed in London.
* CoolOldGuy
* CrapsackWorld
* CrusadingWidower: Paul Kersey.
* CultClassic: Death Wish 3.
* DisposableWoman: One of the series most notorious traits. Actually, if you're female and hang around Paul Kersey you're pretty much screwed.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: Paul doesn't seem to get a "true" one until the fifth film.
* ElectricBoogaloo
* EmotionlessGirl: Paul's daughter becomes this after being raped.
* EveryCarIsAPinto
* FilmOfTheBook
* HandCannon: His friend "Wildey" (more specifically, the .475 Wildey Magnum. Currently the most powerful semiautomatic handgun in the world.)
* [=~Hey, It's That Guy!~=]: Daphne Moon's ex-fiance appears as a lawyer in Death Wish V. Ian Malcom is one of the criminals who kills Paul's wife. LaurenceFishburne plays a hoodlum in the 2nd film. Counselor Troi gets raped and killed in Death Wish 3. Cummings, from Mitchell is Paul's old war buddy.
** As such a long-running series (five films spread out across twenty years), Death Wish features of a number of appearances by then-unknown actors who would go on to star in bigger and better roles. In addition to those listed above, Machete, XFiles Director Skinner, Mulan's father, and Lieutenant Tuvok all appear as henchmen in Death Wish IV. Bill S. Preston appears as a Mook in Death Wish III.
* KillAllHumans: The bad ones anyway.
* MoneyDearBoy: The reason Charles Bronson kept coming back to the role for the sequels.
* MoreDakka: In Death Wish 3 and Death Wish 4, Kersey uses a .30 caliber M1919 and a M16 with an M203 respectively.
* NewYorkSubway
* NumberedSequels: Alternates between normal and Roman numbers.
* PreMortemOneLiner
* RapeAsDrama: Kersey's daughter was raped when his wife killed, all for drama and motivation. Also the rape/murder is played for exploitation turn-on, which makes all of the subsequent action seem more than a bit hypocritical.
* RevolversAreJustBetter: Kersey carries around a revolver for most of the films
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge
* Sequelitis
* SoBadItsGood: Death Wish 3.
* TookALevelInBadass
* UnfortunateImplications: Kersey seems to kill mostly black men but movie itself seems to lampshade this. "What do you want, racial equality among muggers?"
* UnwittingPawn: Paul becomes one in The Crackdown.
* UglyGuyHotWife: Or in most cases, girlfriend.
* VigilanteMan
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: In the third movie, Kersey's friend leaves in the middle of a town-wide gunfight to reload his zip gun. He doesn't appear again. He's probably deader than a doornail.
* TheWoobie: Paul Kersey obviously. His wife was killed, daughter was raped (on two different movies), traumatized, and then committed suicide. Cops are always after him, and most women he becomes involved with get killed off and the fact that we had to mark the latter in spoiler tags is even sadder.
* YourMileageMayVary: The quality of the sequels.
