Instead of using them, Harry uses the fireplace to communicate with him and [[spoiler:gets himself caught by Umbridge, as well as getting fooled by Kreacher, resulting in Sirius' death]]. Harry only remembers about them later and makes an attempt to communicate with Sirius [[spoiler:after he's already dead]], which obviously doesn't work. The mirrors are brought back into play in the seventh book when [[spoiler:Aberforth Dumbledore]] is using the other one to keep track of Harry.

The mirrors are brought even open it until the end of the book where he learns it was a 2 way mirror he could have communicated with Sirius with. However, as [[spoiler:Sirius is already dead by then]], it is useless and Harry throws it back into play in the seventh book when his trunk where it shatters. It isn't until 2 books later where it finally becomes relevant as [[spoiler:Aberforth Dumbledore]] is using uses the other one second mirror to keep track tabs on Harry who started carrying a shard of Harry.his broken mirror around after finding it while cleaning out his trunk.
