* The Hillbilly in ''Videogame/DeadByDaylight'' has a chainsaw as a secondary weapon. The advantage of this is that it causes him to sprint and will instantly down a survivor, but it makes a lot of noise and takes a few seconds to rev up.

* ''Literature/TheZombieSurvivalGuide'' deconstructs this, noting all of the above reasons ''not'' to use a chainsaw against the undead, and adding that you're throwing infected bodily fluids all over the place if you ''do'' get it to work, that the very loud noise it generates is certain to attract more zombies and even its marginal usefulness as a weapon ceases completely the instant it runs out of gas or breaks down.

** In ''VideoGame/Doom2016'' the chainsaw returns in its murderous glory. Now it kills any enemy you use it on in one hit, but each use consumes fuel and fuel is quite rare. Its presence on Mars is explained as being imported by a black market for unusual weapon enthusiasts.

** The chainsaw in ''[[Videogame/DoomTheRoguelike DoomRL]]'' not only does a whole whackload of damage per strike, it's apparently Good enough that picking it up for the first time gives you a free Berserk Pack effect.

** In ''DoomTheRoguelike'', the chainsaw makes an appearance. It has the effect of a berserk pack the first time you pick it up, with the pickup message "[[ShoutOut BLOOD!]] [[VideoGame/DwarfFortress BLOOD FOR ARMOK, GOD OF BLOOD!]]"

However, there are several reasons why such that simply wouldn't happen in the real world. First and foremost, chainsaws were not designed to be used as weapons. Chainsaws are prone to a phenomenon called "kickback" where one tooth of the blade contacts something without cutting it and the resulting shock throws the blade backwards violently, often right at the unfortunate operator's head; obviously, this is all the more likely to happen when they're being used as a weapon.[[note]]In RealLife, a chainsaw needs to be firmly and slowly "applied" to the cutting surface to avoid kickback and get any useful cutting from it.[[/note]] The chain also runs the danger of snapping and whipping the user in the process. Fictional chainsaws also have the ability to start instantly, with one pull of the starter handle, unlike in RealLife where they require several pulls and most models will need to warm up for at least 30 seconds or they'll immediately die when you try to cut something. Most RealLife chainsaws also dull in seconds if they touch anything harder than wood.[[note]]Chainsaws with diamond teeth are used for concrete and some use water for cooling and safety purposes, but it's unusual for a non-professional to have one of these.[[/note]] Counter-zombie usage will create a whole lot of infected mist and grosser byproducts. Finally, running out of fuel or suffering a broken chain or clutch will leave the erstwhile chainsaw maniac holding a big, unwieldy and rather useless club.
