* ''Comicbook/{{Supergirl}}'': In any universe and timeline, Franchise/Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El has endured tragedy: She always loses her parents -usually twice-, her home is destroyed -at least thrice-, she's used and manipulated... and she always tries to overcome her pain, make herself stronger and become a real hero. In the ''ComicBook/RedDaughterOfKrypton'' arc, an enemy notes this:

* Lapis Lazuli of ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'', especially in the episode "Jail Break." Steven is completely capable of getting her free, and alongside the Crystal Gems they'd be more than a match for Jasper and Peridot. But Lapis refuses to leave her cell because she believes that resisting would only make things worse and that the only way she can help them is by [[spoiler: stealing the reigns of a fusion with Jasper and dragging them both down to the bottom of the sea forever]]. New information has come about since this troper wrote their summary. We now also know that Lapis was trapped inside a mirror for 6,000 years and interrogated by Homeworld soldiers who mistook her, a civilian, for a Crystal Gem. Even after everyone fled, she was stuck on the Galaxy Warp for ages until Pearl found her. In addition, her fusion with Jasper did her absolutely no good, genuinely ''missing'' Malachite, the most toxic fusion we've seen thus far. Finally, Lauren Zuke confirmed Lapis Lazuli has PTSD, as was hinted at in 'Same Old World.'

** Despite her faux FunPersonified Demeanor, Amethyst has had a really harsh life. She said she never asked to be made. What doesn't help is that not only was she made to be a "bad" gem, but after her creation was left alone in a dark abandoned canyon for millennia without any friends. On top of that, she watched her mother figure due before her very eyes, and she was the one person she thought actually liked her. And chose to ran away from home, she even pushed Steven away, who is the LAST person to reject her for who she is. Poor Girl.

* A rare male example is Nick Wilde from ''Disney/{{Zootopia}}'' who started out as a happy, hell, downright ''sweet'' kid. Right up until he tried to join the [[ScoutOut Junior Ranger Scouts]], only to have them attack him and slap a muzzle on him. This turned him brutally sarcastic, cynical, and bitter for almost three decades. It took Judy Hopps, the city's first bunny cop to pull him out of it, and he did everything possible to drive her up the wall prior to her finally getting through to him.
