* Most of Literature/HeraldsOfValdemar takes place thousands of years AfterTheEnd of a civilization with a high enough degree of Magitek to uplift and heavily alter animals and create entirely new species, several of which survived to the "present day". A few characters with some awareness of ancient history know or speculate that creatures like colddrakes, basilisks, firebirds etc were created as weapons. This isn't ever fully explored, but The Black Gryphon looks back at a period after which an archmage had created intelligent gryphons to express his talent and flatter his ego. The gryphons, adoring him and dependent on him to reproduce, naturally backed him when he went to war with his ANaziByAnyOtherName rival, who promptly made "makaar" with which to counter them, gryphon-like beasts which are uglier, stupider, and more brutal.

* Literature/TheBeginningAfterTheEnd:
** Given how Agrona and the Vritra Clan are a faction of divine EmperorScientist[=s=], it should come as no surprise that their millennia-long experiments upon the inhabitants of Alacrya have led to the creation of many breeds of corrupted mana beasts that have their divine blood spliced into them to make them much more stronger and monstrous than before. These mutated beasts serve as hordes of expendable shock troops in their armies as part of their goal to invade Dicathen and eventually Epheotus. Naturally, the rest of the asuras look down on these with scorn as misbegotten freaks of nature, especially given their AlienNonInterferenceClause pertaining to the lives of the lessers.
** The Vritra are not the only clan of asuras to indulge in this trope. The Grandus Clan, the leaders of the titan race, are known for their creation of guardian beasts. These creatures, as their name suggests, are a more benign version of this trope in that they are created to act as GuardianEntities for important individuals in asuran society.

** Super Mutants were designed to be SuperSoldiers before the nuclear apocalypse. Humans exposed to the FEV transform into giant hulking brutes, almost always at the expense of their higher functions of intelligence, though focusing on staying educated during the process can avoid this. They're also generally extremely violent and profoundly antisocial to anything besides Super Mutants, and are ultimately sterile -- there is a significant amount of variety between the Super Mutants of various games, mostly because they came from different batches of FEV with slightly different results (for example, the Mariposa strain that West Coast Super Mutants came from had a higher chance of producing both intelligent and potentially sociable Super Mutants, while the Capital Wasteland and Commonwealth strains made Super Mutants grow much larger with age), but sterility is shared between all of them.

An AttackAnimal is useful, but sometimes what nature provides is lacking. So you create your own attack animal, genetically engineering existing organisms or creating your own. Maybe add some cybernetics just to make it even stronger. Needless to say, this often backfires, proving that GeneticEngineeringIsTheNewNuke. Maybe this new organism would rather just be left alone, and refuses to actually fight. Maybe it goes feral and becomes a dangerous monster roaming the wilderness. Maybe it actually works perfectly, but those in charge of it are far from ethical.
