* ''Literature/{{Worm}}'': the protagonist, Taylor, gains superpowers and wants to become a superhero, but her first night out fighting crime sees her mistaken for a villain, and she receives an invite from a group of teenage supervillains to join them. She accepts, justifying it to herself by saying she'll infiltrate their group, discover who their sponsor is, and turn them all over to the law in one fell swoop. However, despite the group being made up of robbers, murderers, and even a rapist, she finds herself forming genuine friendships with them, being happier with them than she has been for years (especially given the violent bullying she's endured at school), and slowly falls in more and more until she herself is one of the most notorious and feared villains in the city.

* ''Literature/BreakthroughWithTheForbiddenMaster'': Earth Ragan is the son of two of the seven heroes who defeated the Demon King and ended the war. Unfortunately, all this means for Earth himself is high expectations he can't live up to and what accomplishments are treated as the baseline of what the son of the hero can do. Everyone, from his more talented peers, his own parents, even the maid he regards as a CoolBigSis, dismisses or disregards Earth. It's not until he becomes haunted by the spirit of the late Demon King, Tre'ainar, that he finds someone willing to give him the time and attention he needs, allowing him to improve his skills by leaps and bounds in a short period of time. When pressured about how he's using the Demon King's skills, Earth doesn't hesitate to choose Tre'ainar over everyone else, as while everyone else was criticizing and interrogating him, Tre'ainar was telling Earth to reveal his existence and let him take the heat.

* ''Manga/{{Inuyasha}}'': Rin became mute and scared of humans after her family was slaughtered by thieves. The villagers treated her as an outcast and beat her for picking up food. After she was killed by wolves, Sesshoumaru revived her out of curiosity but allowed Rin to tag along with him and his servant Jaken. Thanks to him, she recovered her voice and became a normal, cheerful child; also she was treated decently by the two cold youkais. The arrangement has benefited both parties, as Sesshoumaru eventually warmed up to Rin and developed a merciful side... kind of.

* In ''WebOriginal/BrigScarletFlamingo'', Joseph Avery is desperately unhappy and lonely both in his hometown and later at the orphanage (other children bully him, and as no adult looks out for him or gives him any advice, his only solution is to beat them up at the slightest provocation). He eventually runs away and joins a pirate crew, finding happiness and fulfillment, and the pirate captain becomes his ParentalSubstitute.
