All dogs are still identifiable breeds though, including your PlayerCharacter, who can be one of about 50 different dog breeds. Some dog breeds even are portrayed with alterations that normally humans give to dogs, such as docked ears--though those could potentially be excused in-universe as being similar to human body modifications, such as tattoos or piercings.

* In ''Literature/WarriorCats'' canon this is subverted as no Clan cat has been described as a purebred. Even the ex-kittypets all seem to be nondescript mixes. This doesn't stop fans (and even some of the writers) from referring to certain characters as purebreds though. * This is justified in the case of conformation shows (which is what most people think of when it comes to dog shows). The primary reason that conformation dog shows usually only allow purebreds to compete in them is because the main point of them is to determine which dog is the best example of their particular breed and then deciding which individual dog is "Best in Show."
** However, other types of dog shows, such as herding trial and obedience competitions, often allow mixed-breed dogs to compete.

Purebreeds are preferred in the media for a few reasons. In live action works, studios often use multiple animals to play one animal character. This is a lot easier with a purebred dog, since there are many other individual animals that will look almost exactly the same. It's a lot harder to find "doubles" for a mutt that has a more unique appearance. In other cases, studios believe that viewers will respond more positively to a dog of a recognizable breed. Said reason also helps fit into the matter of [[DogStereotype Breed Stereotypes]], in which they want the "girly" dog to be something like a poodle, a "mean" dog to be something like a Rottweiler or doberman, or other dog breeds associated with (that is, bred for) certain traits. Mixed-breed dogs, on other hand, are considered [[ScavengersAreScum scummy scavengers]] and largely ignored at best.
