* BigSisterInstinct: Annette is a full-on KnightTemplarBigBrother towards Dani and does't forgive easily whoever hurts her little brother.

The main characters are a girl named Annette Burnier and a boy named Lucien Morel. They're best friends but they fight sometimes. On Christmas, Annette's mother gives birth to a boy, whom Annette names Dani, but the mother dies after he's born. Five years pass. But after a series of misunderstandings, Lucien is angry at Dani and threatens to throw his pet kitten, Klaus, into a ravine. But Klaus bites him, and Dani falls into the ravine after him. He's alive, but his leg is so severely injured he can't bend it, and has to use crutches for the rest of his life. Annette is furious, so much so that whenever Lucien tries to do something nice for them, she deliberately ruins everything he makes. Neither children are happy, and have to forgive each other sometime.

* AdaptationSpeciesChange: Klaus is a female white kitten in the books, but in the anime he's a male ermine for some reason.
* AdaptationalWimp: Pierre, one of Monsieur Nicholas' students is an intelligent, role-model student whom Lucien gets jealous on in the novel. In the anime however, his role is reduced and sometimes seen [[ButtMonkey being bullied]] by Jean. The model student role is taken by [[CanonForeigner Franz]] instead.

* CoolOldLady: In the anime, there's Annette's Great Aunt Claude Martha. Not only is she the most understanding and rational person in the entire series, she actually knows how stupid Annette and Lucien are behaving toward each other and gently calls Annette out on her grudge. Not only that, she's especially kind and understanding [[spoiler: when Annette confesses she breaks Lucien's wooden horse carving.]] Not only that, she understands that Lucien didn't hurt Dani on purpose, unlike Annette, who believes he did.
