** "Defense" Shikigami, the strongest type and the most taxing on the user, since they are more-or-less always active and constantly draining the user's magic reserves. The drain is usually not a problem when they are not physically manifested in the real world, but can be quite taxing on the user once they do. These range from especially-made artificial shikigami with both the ability to be controlled remotely and with the ability to act independently, to living, breathing beings which take the form of various mythological figures and creatures. These latter ones are explained as beings suddenly coming into existence or awareness through items that possess great amounts of magic power. [[note]]There's tons of these in the series, like Natsume's [[DragonsUpTheYinYang dragon Hokuto,]] [[LittleBitBeastly Kon]], Yakou's [[UndyingLoyalty Hishamaru and Kakugyouki]] and Kyoko's Kakfu and Hokfu. Harutora himself is technically one of these to Natsume.[[/note]]

In UsefulNotes/WorldWarII, the Japanese military approached the [[TheArchmage genius onmyoji]] Yakou Tsuchimikado, seeking new weapons to further the [[TheEmpire country's]] ambitions of [[TakeOverTheWorld becoming a world power]]. With their resources he was able to [[DoingResearch rewrite the book on magic]], creating a modernised form of UsefulNotes/{{Onmyodo}} with incredible power. Yakou was regarded as [[LivingLegend a hero or even a figure of worship]]... until he brought about the [[HellGate Great Spirit Disaster]] in [[TokyoIsTheCenterOfTheUniverse Tokyo]] during a LastStand to avert Japan's defeat. While Yakou died in the Disaster, magic and {{Magitek}} derived from his teachings are still in use today.

Harutora Tsuchimikado comes from a branch of the same prestigious family as Yakou, but his ability to [[SupernaturalSensitivity detect spirit energy]] is zero. Since he has no interest in becoming a proper onmyoji nor obligation to do so, he's been enjoying a peaceful daily life with his friends at a normal high school. And then one day his childhood friend [[TeenGenius Natsume Tsuchimikado]], heir to the head family, suddenly appears...

''Toky Ravens'' is a Japanese light novel series written by Kōhei Azano and illustrated by Sumihei, currently running since 2010. A manga adaptation ran from 2010 to 2017, with several spinoffs released until 2015, while a 24-episode anime adaptation aired in October 2013.

* DeathIsCheap: Averted. [[spoiler:Several characters get revived. But not one has come back as a human...]]
* {{Deconstruction}}: The story deconstructs the role of magic in society and its lack of domestic benefits. Its only use is combat and exorcising spiritual disasters caused by Yakou's failed ritual and spiritual terrorism.

* EmpathicEnvironment: Inverted. [[spoiler:Again, fireworks pop in the background when Natsume sacrifices her life to save Harutora after the Raven Coat reacts with his power.]]
* {{Familiar}}: Shikigami; there are different types. In general, we have:
** "Simple" Shikigami, which can be anything ranging from vague figures to animal-shaped to full-on human-like constructs. Typically, they perform only the basic commands and functions for which they were intended, or are outright-used as remotely-controlled puppets. Their vessels are always typical shikigami charms, since they are not that complex compared to the other types. [[note]]Examples of this type include the various black figure shikigami seen [[MundaneUtility used to move things,]] the general-use shikigami used by the [[RedShirtArmy Magical Investigators]] and [[BadassTeacher Ohtomo,]] [[ItMakesSenseInContext Natsume's male-version of herself]], and [[spoiler:[[TheLostLenore girl-Hokuto.]]]][[/note]]
** "Mechanical" Shikigami, named not because they are made from machines or so, but because their vessels are typically not shikigami charms, but various tools charged with magic or outright magical shells that act as their bodies. Depending on the shikigami, they have varying grades of awareness and ability to act independently. [[note]]Examples include the [[WarmUpBoss Ashura]] used by Suzuka at the start of the series and the Onmyo Academy gatekeepers Alpha and Omega.[[/note]]
Harutora himself is technically one of these to Natsume.[[/note]]
* FamousAncestor: Tsuchimikado Yakou is the ancestor of Harutora and Natsume, and Abe no Seimei is another one of their ancestors further back.
* FieryRedhead: Takiko Souma. Her personality causes a few '''[[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom HUGE]]''' [[SpannerInTheWorks problems]].
* FiringOneHanded: Averted in the [[AnimatedAdaptation anime]] with Magical Crime Investigators[[note]]mage police[[/note]], they use both hands when using handguns. Played straight with Hirata Atsune [[spoiler:because he is actually a teenager in disguise.]]
* FlamingSword: The protective sword in Episode 3, passed down through Natsume's family, when unsealed, gains the power of the flame god, Indra.
* FlashStep: Spirit Step, an Imperial Style spell that Reji Kagami performs during the Chimera Incident. It uses [[BackgroundMagicField spirit pulses]] to move from one location to the next instantly.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** To Harutora's friend Hokuto [[spoiler: being Natsume's familiar]]:
*** In the early episodes, Hokuto (the dragon) responds to Harutora's calls.
*** [[SpoilerOpening In the opening when the camera focuses on Natsume's face, the features slowly start changing to Hokuto's face in the exact same position.]]
** At one point, Suzuka hugs a one eyed tiger plushie with a bandaged eye.
** Episode 9 [[spoiler: when Hirata performs the Taizan Fukun Ritual then gives thanks to the dead Mutobe.]]
** Touji is seen walking out of Shamanic/Onmyo Clinic in the first episode.
** Episode 2 has a pretty subtle one: during a history lecture on prominent Onmyouji, the blackboard displays the names and info of Abe no Semimei and Douman Ashiya. However, a birthdate and deathdate is only shown for the former...
** In the Light Novel & Manga: When Ohtomo first meets Kon, he notes that she has a [[PowerLimiter seal]] on her, this mentioned again by Suzu Saotome.
** In Episode 6, the camera pans to Kon as Kakugyouki comments on [[spoiler:Hishamaru]].
** Countless times, Harutora is mistaken for the heir of the Tsuchimikado family early in the story. [[spoiler: Harutora is the real heir of the Tsuchimikado's. His powers are sealed by his father and Natsume is adopted into the family]].

** The Tsuchigumos developed by Yakou Tsuchimikado for the army were used to wipe out a group of Magical Crime Investigators and KillTheCutie. Douman also used imitations of them to attack Omnyo Preparatory School and the Onmyo Agency.
** [[spoiler:The Tsuchimikados' plan to hide Harutora's identity as the true reincarnation of Yakou. They were doing quite well, Natsume's life-long burden aside, until the secrecy made an inconsistency apparent when Kyoko unwittingly revealed it to Takiko...which lead to the latter acting rashly, Harutora suffering PowerIncontinence, and Natsume [[HeroicSacrifice getting killed saving Harutora from it.]]]]
** [[spoiler:For that matter, Takiko's rash plan to awaken Harutora as Yakou. It was a complete and utter success. Not only did Harutora awaken, after a while so did Kon as Hishamaru, and even Kakugyouki returned to him as well. * GovernmentAgencyOfFiction: The Lingering Spirit Division in the Imperial Household Agency[[note]]Responsible for stabilizing the [[BackgroundMagicField spirit flow]] in Tokyo and exorcising [[ParanormalInvestigation lingering spirits]] which were predominantly [[BlueBlood nobles and royalty]]. This Agency became a nest for Yakou fanatics due to the [[TheseAreThingsManWasNotMeantToKnow nature of the work]] and was purged prior to the beginning of the story.[[/note]]and The Onmyo Agency.[[note]]Includes the Exorcism Bureau to handle spiritual disasters and the Magical Crime Investigation Bureau.[[/note]]
* GratuitousEnglish: Rather than something traditional like "Kyu-kyu nyo ritsu ryo"[[note]]Roughly "Heed this command swiftly", a phrase originally used to end government decrees[[/note]], the trigger command for modern onmyodo spells is "Order!".
* GunsAreWorthless: Averted as they show up in the hands of the right people despite the fantasy setting, who are not afraid of using them and the bullets hurt and kill people. Played straight against any of the top Onmyoji.
* GuyOnGuyIsHot: Due to Natsume's interactions with Harutora while crossdressing as a boy, ''most girls in the class'' mistake them for a couple and even encourage them, [[LoveTriangle sometimes putting Touji into the equation]]. The dorm supervisors in particular [[YaoiFangirl are fierce supporters of the alleged relationship]], and can't resist fantasizing about it.
* HandSeals: Used for spells.
* HellGate: Pretty much what spiritual disasters do and are: gradually damage the surrounding area, growing in power, manifesting physically as "demons" and monsters, and eventually becoming a huge mess of out-of-control spiritual energy that keeps creating more spiritual disasters to start the cycle all over again.
* HeroicBSOD: Happens to Harutora [[spoiler:after his PowerUp fatally injures Natsume.]]
* HeroicSacrifice:
** [[spoiler: Hokuto]] sacrificing herself to save Harutora from Suzuka's Tsuchigumo.
** [[spoiler: Natsume]] sacrificing herself to free [[spoiler:Harutora]] from his PowerIncontinence, which she partly blames herself for.
** The kicker is that in both cases, the parties making the sacrifice were [[spoiler:the same person.]]
* HeroWithBadPublicity: [[spoiler:Harutora is branded as a terrorist and is on the run from the authorities.]]
* HiddenDepths: Everyone has their own beliefs and agendas.
* HiddenElfVillage: The Seishuku Temple holds a number of Living Spirits and practitioners of First-Class magic, who aren't licensed. It's a place for homeless practitioners with nowhere else to go, effectively making it a den of magical criminals and the perfect place [[spoiler:for Natsume to hide.]]
* [[TheWildHunt Hundred Demons' Night-Parade]]: A phase 4 spiritual disaster that spawns more {{Youkai}}.

Judging by how twisted he is, he may have done that on purpose, but he still had the ball firmly grabbed if he believed he would not suffer any consequences in the pretty probable case that Shaver ended up butchering them all.
* ImportantHairAccessory: Hokuto wears a short pink ribbon that Harutora won at a festival game. When Natsume starts to dress as a boy, she wears one just like it to tie her hair. As it turns out, [[spoiler: it's the same ribbon. Since Hokuto is actually Natsume's familiar, she must have collected the ribbon sometime after her "death".]]
* InSeriesNickname: Harutora's is "Bakatora"[=/=]"stupid tiger." The Creator/FUNimation dub changes this to "Stupidtora".
* ISurrenderSuckers: What Daizen Amami does to take down the mole, [[spoiler:Takiko Souma disguised as Hirata.]]
* ItsRainingMen: [[TankGoodness Armoured]] [[SpiderTank Tsuchigumo]] [[{{Youkai}} warriors]] can be air-dropped.
* KillTheCutie: Happens to [[ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice Hokuto (the girl)]].
* KissingCousins: Harutora and Natsume. Technically, what Kyoko wants with Natsume [[spoiler:--before learning Natsume is actually a girl. Then it's with Harutora--]], since the Kurahashi clan is a Tsuchimikado branch family that separated generations ago.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: If you watch the bottom-right hand corner during the principal's lecture on Yakou in Episode 4, the corner reveals a person looking back at the camera.
* LittleBitBeastly: Harutora's shikigami Kon which is a [[AsianFoxSpirit Kitsune]].
* LooseLips: [[spoiler:Kyoko leaked the fact that Natsume is a girl to Takiko Souma and the Onmyo Agency.]]
* LovesMyAlterego: Harutora develops feelings for the dead Hokuto... [[spoiler:who is actually Natsume, through at first he doesn't know that.]]
* LoveDodecahedron: Between Harutora, Hokuto, Natsume, Kyoko, Kon and Suzuka. To wit:
** Hokuto pretty obviously has feelings for Harutora, who was unsure of how he himself felt for Hokuto. These feelings are what lead her to [[spoiler:[[HeroicSacrifice sacrifice herself to save Harutora from Suzuka's Tsuchigumo,]] which leads Harutora to [[LoveEpiphany realize too late what he really felt]] for Hokuto.]] However...
** Natsume is in love with Harutora, who admits to having feelings for [[spoiler:[[TheLostLenore Hokuto,]] or rather, the person who controlled her vessel, who happens to be Natsume.]] Harutora doesn't realize any of this [[spoiler:until later.]]
** Kon is [[UndyingLoyalty completely and utterly devoted]] to Harutora, with plenty of ClingyJealousGirl moments to hint that she likes Harutora as [[BodyguardCrush more than master and servant,]] even after just meeting each other. This is very likely because [[spoiler:Kon is Hishamaru's sealed state, and is unconsciously reacting to her feelings for Yakou, who Harutora is the reincarnation of.]]
** Kyoko is in love with Natsume ([[DramaticIrony not knowing Natsume's actually a girl]]), with whom she made a promise in their childhood the one day they spent together to find and return to her a ribbon Kyoko's grandmother made for her. [[spoiler:She actually made that promise with Harutora, but she never asked his name when they were together. [[note]]She assumed he was Natsume after asking her grandmother for the Tsuchimikado heir's name, and so assumed she made the promise with Natsume, which is the basis for her feelings for Natsume at the start of the series. Natsume herself was sick that day, which is why Harutora was on his own when he and Kyoko met.[[/note]] Once Natsume's real gender comes out, Kyoko realizes the misunderstanding and her feelings shift to Harutora.]]
** Suzuka developed a crush on Harutora because of his compassion for her and forgiving her for [[spoiler:"killing" Hokuto,]] the event that is the reason part of her feelings were driven by guilt. That, and because [[SacredFirstKiss he was her first kiss.]] Her feelings only grow because of the several times Harutora attempts to cheer her up and make her acknowledge that she doesn't have to be alone.
*** So, to summarize: Suzuka likes Harutora. Kyoko likes Natsume [[spoiler:then later likes Harutora]], who likes Harutora, who likes [[spoiler:Hokuto, who's also Natsume.]] Kon likes Harutora because [[spoiler:Kon is Hishamaru, who likes Yakou, who is also Harutora.]]
* MageMarksman: Hirata, and Magical Crime Investigators who are authorized to use firearms.
* MagiBabble: A lot of dialogue around magic relies on understanding the principles.
* MagicalIncantation: Various Mantras such as Acala's Fire Realm.
* MarshmallowHell: Kyoko subjects Suzuka to this.
* MeaningfulEcho: Hakuto's death early on in the series is repeated by [[spoiler: Natsume later on, when she's about to die as well.]] They both even share some of the same dialog. This becomes especially meaningful once one realizes that [[spoiler: Hokuto was Natsume's familiar.]]
* MediumBlending: The AnimatedAdaptation mixes CG in for Man-made Type shikigami and drawn ones for organic Servant Type shkigami.
* MistakenForGay: Both Harutora and Natsume are mistaken, when Natsume's male double shikigami (long story) undresses while in Harutora's embrace. The Girls LOVE IT.
** Then comes the Dougenzaka mess, where the past incident's misunderstanding comes up again. They manage to shake off the homosexuality suspicion...but [[IdiotHero Harutora]] accidentally lands himself an even worse label: paedophile.
* MistakenIdentity: Harutora is sometimes mistaken for Natsume. This is mostly due to Natsume pretending to be a boy. [[spoiler:The reason Kyoko even likes Natsume is because she got Natsume mixed with Harutora as children and really fell in love with him.]]
* MomentKiller: Suzu Saotome showing up right before Natsume is about to confess to Harutora.
* MonsterThreatExpiration: The first time a Tsuchigumo is seen, it defeats a group of professional Onmyoji with ease. The second time they are deployed en mass by Douman and are held back by a group of Onmyoji students. Justified in that they were imitations that lacked solid vessels.
* MoodWhiplash: Kon. Around three different emotions a minute and has a [[ClusterFBomb really filthy mouth]] and [[{{Yandere}} crazy affection]] when she wants to let go.
* MundaneMadeAwesome: You know that lightning that pops up whenever two students have a stare down? [[SugarWiki/FunnyMoments Yeah, that's literal, complete with shining glasses]].
* MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours: Averted as the characters in this universe do not [[CombatPragmatist fight fair]].
* NecessaryEvil: How the Onmyoudo Agency sees Dark Temples. Practitioners and Living Spirits that couldn't fit in had to go somewhere and it existed even before their formation. [[spoiler:The plot of the 10th Novel is basically with the new reforms they are no longer necessary and will either be bought into the fold or eliminated.]]
* NoodleIncident: Pretty much what happens in every side story.
* ObliviousToLove: Harutora.
* OccultDetective: Mystical Investigators are assigned to deal with crimes involving magic-users, rather than perform exorcisms like Onmyouji.
* OffModel: In the first episode, Hokuto is shown in close-up directly in front of a bed of sunflowers. However, when another camera angle is shown, the flowers are to her right.
* OneDialogueTwoConversations: Natsume and Harutora’s conversation regarding Natsume’s alter ego and cross-dressing.
* PaperTalisman: Everywhere, comes in a belt-holster too.
* PhraseCatcher: A little before entering the magic school, Natsume starts calling Harutora "Bakatora"[=/=]"Stupidtora" like Hokuto used to do.[[spoiler: This should be one of many clues that tells the audience that Hokuto and Natsume are very intimately connected.]]
* PlotTriggeringDeath:
** The death of Hakuto (the girl) prompts Harutora to become an onmyoji to fulfill her wish.
** [[spoiler:The death of Natsume and subsequent [[CameBackWrong botched resurrection]] drives Harutora on a journey to recover various artifacts to fully revive her.]]
* PoliceBrutality: When the Magical Crime Investigators raid the Twin Horn Syndicate.
* PostModernMagik: Modern magic utilizes technology and modern equipment.
* PowerIncontinence: Happens to Harutora [[spoiler:and it kills Natsume.]]
* TheProphecy: What Yasuzumi Tsuchimikado is trying to stop.
* TheProtagonist: Harutora [[spoiler:but switches to Natsume later on.]]
* PuttingTheBandBackTogether: Implied as what the villains are trying to do.
* RedemptionQuest: [[spoiler:For Yakou Tsuchimikado to restore the {{ancient tradition}}s he destroyed.]]
* {{Reincarnation}}: Natsume is believed to be the reincarnation of Tsuchimikado Yakou. [[spoiler: As it turns out, the ''real'' reincarnation was ''Harutora'' instead]].
* RitualMagic: Higher-Level spells, such as the Taizan Fukun.
* SacrificialRevivalSpell: The Taizan Fukun ritual, supposedly. [[spoiler:The version used by Suzuka is actually one of several versions, and there are ways to use it to successfully revive someone without need to sacrifice one's life.]]
* SecretKeeper: Both Harutora and Touji for Natsume.
** [[spoiler:Harutora and Natsume's parents for Harutora, because of their plan where Natsume unwittingly serves as a decoy to avert attention form Harutora, the true reincarnation of Yakou.]]
* ShoutOut: Tons of them to the anime version of ''Literature/TeitoMonogatari''.
** Although flipped, in the third episode, Natsume has a close-up with [[MemeticMutation her face covering the entire screen grumbling]].
* SuicideAttack: What Shidou Dairenji and Chihiro Mutobe do after they cause spiritual disasters.
* SweetPollyOliver: Natsume as she attends school in Tokyo, pretending to be a boy.
** SweetOnPollyOliver: Several girls have a crush on Natsume. [[spoiler:Stops after her true gender comes out.]]
* TakingYouWithMe: Curses triggered by the death of its caster.
* TemporalThemeNaming: Harutora (Spring), Natsume (Summer), Akino (Fall), Touji (Winter).
* ThreeAmigos: Harutora, Touji and Hokuto in the first chapters, then its Harutora, Touji and Natsume, mainly. Bonus points for [[spoiler:essentially being made up of the same three characters.]] This trio also forms part of the main cast alongside Kyoko, Tenma and Suzuka.
** [[spoiler:Later, they discover that Jin Ohtomo, Zenjirou Kogure and Suzu Saotome were a similar trio.]]
* TraumaCongaLine:
** Natsume: [[spoiler:She gets [[KillTheCutie killed]], her [[OneTrueLove love interest]] becomes someone she doesn't know, who [[CameBackWrong botches her resurrection, binds her soul bound to her dragon]] as a [[OurLichesAreDifferent lich]] and actively avoids her. She is also forced to hide her [[SecretIdentity new identity]] and is hunted by the authorities.]]
** Suzuka: [[spoiler:Watch as her love interest’s PowerIncontinence kill a [[KillTheCutie friend]], encounter her should be dead father who [[FateWorseThanDeath experimented]] on her, is captured by the authorities, separated from her friends and forced to work with the enemy.]]
* TrueSight: Spirit-seers can use this to see spirits, auras and fluctuations in the magic. It's stated that while anyone can use magic to an extent, as they possess some measure of power, you can only become a first-class Onmyouji or Exorcist if you can see spirit energy. Living Spirits have this by default.
* TheUnreveal: Just what exactly was in Natsume´s closet?
* UnwantedFalseFaith: The Yakou Fanatics are this to Natsume.
* VillainTeamUp
* TheWarRoom: Meeting room for the Divine Generals in the Onmyo Agency.
* [[WhamEpisode Wham Chapter]]: [[spoiler:The death of Natsume.]]
* WholesomeCrossdresser: Harutora had a date with one. Harutora thought that the crossdresser was a girl and was greatly disturbed when he found out.
** Also Natsume, thanks to a main family tradition that states the heir must present themselves as a male in relationships with outsiders, [[ExactWords which she took at face value.]] [[spoiler:A '''FAKE''' tradition that Natsume was told about in order to hide that Yakou's real reincarnation, who was born male, is not Natsume, but actually Harutora.]]
* WizardingSchool: Onmyo Preparatory School.
* WordPower: Known as Powerspeak, high level spells used by Divine Generals that allow the caster limited control over the victim’s body.
* WorldOfBadass: Almost every character.
* YaoiFangirl: It seems nearly the entire female student body is one.
* {{Yandere}}: Natsume towards Harutora. He has no idea that she likes him and it is PlayedForLaughs. Same goes for Kon, who piles BodyguardCrush [[spoiler:and ReincarnationRomance]] on top of that.
* ZigzagPaperTassel: Hung around the [[SacrificialRevivalSpell Taizan Fukun Ritual]] altar.
