Davian, a young student at a Gifted academy, is soon to face his trials, and his failure means a fate almost worse than death.
However, Davian is unaware that he wields the power of the Augurs, and sets off on a quest to learn more about his heritage and save the world from an ancient enemy, thought to be long-defeated. Along the way, he must learn to control his power and come to understand his role in shaping the events of the future.

*** Breshada is a highly skilled, notorious Hunter with a Named sword. Her violent tendencies and outright hostility to the gifted make her a better fit for a DarkActionGirl, though.
*** Dezia fits the role as well due to her excellent archery skills and [[spoiler: eventual influence over the Neskian army.]]
* AMindIsATerribleThingToRead: Augurs can read minds, but this is a dangerous process; they take on memories that aren't theirs and can even die during the process if they get too attached. Forced reading can also severely hurt the target, even [[spoiler: causing them to become brain-dead.]]

* TheAtoner: Caeden, even if he doesn't know for sure that he's guilty.
* BadFuture: Implied in Asha's vision of Davian. [[spoiler: The reality is more nuanced, as Davian contacts her before the Venerate have actually succeeded in their plan.]]
* BettyAndVeronica: Ishelle sees herself as the Veronica to Asha's Betty (with Davian as Archie). [[spoiler: It doesn't ring true, as Davian's feelings for Asha are too strong for him to really consider Ishelle as a romantic partner.]]
* BeautyBrainsAndBrawn: Davian is TheSmartGuy, Wirr is the most skilled at using essence and Asha, while no less competent than the other two, is Davian's beautiful love interest.
* BeautyIsNeverTarnished: Both Asha and [[spoiler:the true Shadraehin]] are Shadows, but remain beautiful despite their facial markings.
* BewareTheNiceOnes:
*** Wirr is good-natured and carefree, but also an immensely powerful Gifted. [[spoiler: After he becomes Northwarden, he also has the ability to command any Gifted or Administrator through an Oathstone. His kindness and integrity are the only reasons that power isn't exploited for political gain.]]
*** Erran is a genuinely kind and cheerful boy, and a good friend to Ashalia. He's also [[spoiler: a powerful Augur who has been Controlling Elocien for years.]]
* BigBad:
*** Aarkein Devaed. [[spoiler: Not really, as he switched sides and is actually one of the four POV characters.]]
*** [[spoiler: El/Shammaeloth]] fits this role much better by the end of the story.
* BlessedWithSuck: Gifted have immense power, but are bound by the tenets and therefore can only use it on other Gifted. They're also treated as low-class citizens.
* BookEnds: Caeden's complete journey as [[spoiler: an immortal]] both begins and ends with him being [[spoiler: beheaded.]]
* CrazyAwesome: Elocien's preferred method of entering a room for an important meeting is to kick the door down.
* EldritchAbomination: Several examples on the Venerate's side of the conflict.
*** [[spoiler: El/Shammaeloth's]] true form is an abhorrent, writhing mass of tendrils and sludge. Even seeing this doesn't convince [[spoiler: Alaris]] of its true nature.
*** All of the banes, to some degree. Special mention goes to the al'goriat, [[spoiler: they are disfigured, semi-translucent former humans]] with ludicrously sharp teeth, murderous instincts and time manipulation abilities.
* EveryScarHasAStory: Taeris has plenty, and Davian bears a few trademark cuts as well. [[spoiler: They’re all from the same horrifying incident.]]
* FantasticRacism: Due to their previous positions as the Augur's enforcers, the Gifted are discriminated against by the general population. Meanwhile, everyone discriminates against Shadows.
* FiveManBand: Out of the main group of travelers...
*** TheLeader - Taeris
*** TheSmartGuy - Davian
*** TheLancer - Wirr
*** TheBigGuy - Aelric/Caeden
*** TheChick - Dezia
* Foreshadowing: Chock-full of this, given that this story has elements of time travel.
*** Deilannis features an eerie skull mounted on one of its arches, which gives the group a good scare. [[spoiler: The skull actually belongs to Davian,]] justifying his unsettled reaction.
*** During their trek through Deilannis, the group encounters Orkoth, a savage beast that attacks their party, but leaves Caden and Davian alone. [[spoiler: This is because Caeden is the one who created Orkoth, and Davian has already been cleared to Orkoth by Malshash in his journey through time.]]
*** Davian's first encounter with Malshash is rife with these. First, Malshash's use of the silver ring Vessel indicates that it will be of great significance to Davian. [[spoiler: It ends up representing both his love for Asha, and his relationship with his parents.]] Second, his horror at Davian's ability to shapeshift into another man is due to [[spoiler: his knowledge that Davian had to kill this man in order for it to be possible.]] Finally, the sadness he exhibits at Davian's progress comes from [[spoiler: the belief that he was responsible for killing Davian, and his remorse for his actions.]]
*** When lighting the [[spoiler: funeral pyre]] near the boundary at the end of Book 2, Karaleine sings a strikingly somber dirge. This hints at [[spoiler: her murder and replacement by Nethgalla, as these songs were a favourite of Elliavia as well]].
*** The Venerate's claims that Davian's head will be on a pike, and their warnings that Caeden [[spoiler: will kill Davian]], take on a new significance once [[spoiler: his apparent death at Caeden's hands is revealed.]]
*** A minor example, but Raeleth's similarity in appearance to [[spoiler: Davian]] hints at their actual relationship of [[spoiler: father and son.]]
*** Davian is somehow the only person who can access kan in [[spoiler: Zvaelar]]. He also arrives there 3 months after everyone else. This is because, like the al'goriat, he was [[spoiler: created there (allowing him to touch kan)]], and subsequently spent [[spoiler: about 3 months in Zvealar as a fetus (so his 'time signature' already counted those months and delayed accordngly)]].
* FutureBadass: Hinted at in Asha's vision of Davian, who is a lot more muscular and serious. [[spoiler: Verified in Book 3, as by this point Davian has become the most powerful Augur in history.]]
* GreatOffscreenWar: Three, in fact; The Unseen War, the Genesis War and the Eternity War.
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: There are plenty of men who fight with swords or Essence, but Dezia is the only character to use a bow.
* HeroOfAnotherStory:
*** Aelric and Dezia, literally. Their [[spoiler: journey to Nesk and eventual return to save Andarra]] is such a large story detour that it's getting its own book.
*** Cyr's actions have an immense impact on the plot, even though he is never directly shown before [[spoiler: his death.]]
* HeroesPreferSwords:
*** Initially downplayed. In Book 1,only Caeden and Aelric are shown to be competent with swords. The others, including the main trio, use Essence or Vessels to fight.
*** By the end of the story, [[spoiler: Davian and Ashalia]] have received enough sword training to be quite a force on the battlefield as well.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Several examples, mostly due to the Augur's visions of the future.
*** The defining example is the story of an Augur who saw he would be hung for treason. To avoid this, he ran away from his position in the king's court only to be caught and hung for treason.
*** Happens to both [[spoiler: Kol and Fessi]]. They recognize the circumstances of their death, panic, then accidentally instigate it.
*** The most extreme example belongs to Gassandrid. When he was a boy, his home city was destroyed while he was out in the desert hunting. His entire purpose as an immortal is to go back in time to find out what happened. [[spoiler: His attempt to do so actually destroys the city and causes the destruction in the first place.]]
* ImplausibleFencingPowers: Caeden might be a malnourished amnesiac, but put a sword in his hands and he becomes nigh-invincible. [[spoiler: Justified, due to his literal millennia of swordfighting experience.]]
* KingIncognito: [[spoiler:Wirr]] turns out to be [[spoiler:a prince of Andarra.]] By the end of the story, he also becomes [[spoiler: the de facto king, as the rest of the royals save his younger sister are dead.]]
* KryptoniteFactor: The Blind soldiers have Telesthaesia, armour that drinks in essence. The Banes have similar protection as well, making them hard to fight with Essence alone.
* LivingLieDetector: Davian's unique ability that marks him as an Augur.
* LoveTriangle: Davian, Asha and Ishelle form a Type 4, [[spoiler: with Ishelle as the odd woman out.]]
* ModestRoyalty: [[spoiler:Wirr]] again. The rest of the royal family is shown to be quite down to earth and reasonable as well, except King Kevran. [[spoiler: Though that's only he's being controlled by Tol Shen.]]
* MagicallyBindingContract: The Four Tenets, a set of oaths imposed upon every Gifted by a powerful Vessel. Certain non-Gifted, known as Administrators, also bind themselves to the Tenets. [[spoiler: Near the end of the book, Davian and Wirr work together to modify them.]]
** The First Tenet forbids the Gifted from using Essence to harm non-Gifted. [[spoiler: The amended version permits the use of Essence for self-defense or defense of Andarra.]]
** The Second Tenet forbids the Gifted from using Essence to deceive, intimidate, or otherwise work to the detriment of non-Gifted. [[spoiler: The amended version likewise permits the use of Essence in self-defense or defense of Andarra.]]
** The Third Tenet forbids either Gifted or Administrators from harming each other in any fashion. [[spoiler: This Tenet is left unaltered.]]
** The Fourt Tenet requires the Gifted to obey any order given by an Administrator. [[spoiler: Wirr and Davian simply abolish this Tenet.]]
* NightmareFuel: Echoes. They inhabit corpses and act like the person they used to be, right up until they get an opening to murder you. Even if they fail, they just go ''right back to acting like the dead person''. This means you essentially have to kill something that is, at that moment, non-aggressive and may just be begging for its life.
** Notably, despite the First Tenet forbidding the use of Essence against non-Gifted, the Gifted are still able to use Essence against Echoes. Whatever they are, it apparently doesn't count as "alive" or "human".
* NobleDemon: Aarkein Devead is described as doing both good and terrible things, but is mostly remembered for the latter.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: A lot of the Administrators, but Ionis definitely stands out.
* PoliticallyActivePrincess: Karaliene is very much this.
* ReallyRoyaltyReveal: [[spoiler:Wirr]] once again.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure:
*** Against all expectations, Elocien is actually quite patient, calm and supportive towards Asha. [[spoiler: Subverted, as Erran was Controlling him the whole time.]]
*** King Kevran becomes this once [[spoiler: Tol Shen's Control wears off]].
*** Driscin is a supportive mentor to Ishelle and Davian, and basically the only reasonable elder in Tol Shen.
* RebelliousPrincess: Karaliene goes wherever she likes, and hangs out with whomever she chooses, even if such activities aren't fit for a princess.
* TheReveal: Caeden is actually [[spoiler:Aarkein Devaed]]. He's also [[spoiler: Malshash, Davian's Augur tutor, and Talkanor, the Desrielite god of balance]].
* RoyaltySuperPower: Certain members of the royal family are given the authority to change the Tenets.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Every member of royalty, besides the king. [[spoiler: Even him, in the last two books.]]
* ScaryImpracticalArmor: Zig-zagged with the Blind. Their armour would be impractical for anyone else, as it lacks eye-holes. It doesn't seem to bother them, however.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: What the Darecians tried to do. [[spoiler: It didn’t work.]]
* Squick: Whenever there's a massacre, it's described in nauseating detail. And there are a few.
* SwordOfPlotAdvancement: Licanius.
* SwordSparks: During Aelric's bout in the Song of Swords.
* ThisIsYourBrainOnEvil: [[spoiler:Caeden]] is set to be quite different after discovering his true identity.[[spoiler: Defied. The second book makes it very clear that Caeden has always been the fundamentally same person and deeply regretted his atrocities even as he justified them to himself. ]]
* ThreeAmigos: Davian, Wirr and Asha.
* TookALevelInBadass: The four POV characters take several.
*** Davian becomes a much more talented fighter after learning how to use the full extent of his Augur abilities. [[spoiler: His imprisonment in Ilshan Gathdel Teth and subsequently Zvaelar push his physical and mental strength to the absolute limit. Wirr describes him as a 'whirlwind of death' when they make a stand against the Banes in Book 3.]]
*** Wirr's ascension to [[spoiler: the role of Northwarden, with its oathstone mind-control ability,]] and his subsequent military training turns him into an immensely powerful and effective commander.
*** Asha's [[spoiler: imprisonment in the Tributary]] provides her with plenty of time to hone her combat skills. Combined with [[spoiler: her practically infinite reserve, she becomes powerful enough to hold her own against one of the Venerate and create an ilshara from scratch.]]
*** Caden's fighting abilities drastically improve as he regains his memories. Once he has [[spoiler: Licanius]], he becomes nearly unstoppable.
* TwoGuysAndAGirl: The main trio again, though without any sort of love triangle.
* UnspokenPlanGuarantee: Asha's plan to expose Tenvar.
* WarriorPrince: Still [[spoiler:Wirr]], though he fights with essence rather than traditional weaponry.
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: ''The Impossible Tasks of Alarais Shar'' illustrates the consequences of immortality.
* YouCantFightFate: Malshash's personal opinion on trying to change past events.
