An AlternateHistory work by [=RySenkari=] and Nivek on WebSite/AlternateHistoryDotCom, Player Two Start is a pop culture timeline that focuses on the UsefulNotes/ConsoleWars with one signficant change, a change that promises to not only impact the landscape of gaming, but all of pop culture and beyond.

As everyone well versed in the gaming world knows, Creator/Nintendo partnered with Creator/Sony to release a CD add-on for the UsefulNotes/SuperNintendoEntertainmentSystem, only to break off the deal after Nintendo discovered a clause in the contract that would have given Sony's 100% of the software royalties for every CD game sold. Sony would eventually launch the UsefulNotes/Playstation, causing Nintendo to struggle to stay relevant in the console space, but would also contribute to Creator/Sega leaving the hardware market and becoming a Third Party developer. Now many have wondered what if Nintendo decided to continue working with Sony and made the Super Nintendo CD a reality?

In this timeline, Hiroshi Yamauchi, president of Nintendo, decides the technology offered by Sony is too good to pass up, and decides to renegotiate Nintendo's contract with Sony, using the on-going talks with Philips as a bargaining chip...

* With no deal with Philips, the UsefulNotes/PhilipsCDi is just a footnote in gaming history. The Mario and Zelda CDi games never get made, and never get used in WebAnimation/YouTubePoop parodies.
* In general, with the existence of the SNES-CD, games that originally released on the Super Nintendo (and, in some cases, the Genesis/Sega CD) become SNES-CD games instead.
** VideoGame/SuperMarioKart becomes a SNES-CD launch game when the original Mario platformer for the add-on, Super Mario World 2, is delayed in development, resulting in Kart being made for the SNES-CD (with a much-touted four-player mode) instead of the Super Nintendo just so there is a Mario game of some sort at launch.
** OTL's VideoGame/FinalFantasyMysticQuest becomes ITTL Final Fantasy: New Generation for the SNES-CD. It does well enough that Square decides to localize the SNES-CD version of VideoGame/FinalFantasyV.It's released as III, but after Origins is released, reprints would restore the original number.
** VideoGame/StarFox becomes a SNES-CD game -- with live-action cutscenes by the Jim Henson Company. The first game to utilize the [=SuperFX=] chip is Super Squadron X, a sequel to X on the UsefulNotes/GameBoy.
** VideoGame/SecretOfMana was in fact originally planned to be a SNES-CD game. With no retooling needed to fit the limits of a Super Nintendo cartridge, this means a more fleshed out game than OTL, with MultipleEndings and a better localization.
** Contra: Hard Corps for OTL's Genesis becomes Contra IV: Hard Corps for the SNES-CD. The Genesis would get instead Contra: Probotector, a game that had a RobotWar plot instead of an AlienInvasion, introducing the Probotector concept outside of Europe. The Probotectors were the protagonists in all European versions of Contra games at the time, replacing the human characters. This was due to the CensorshipBureau in Germany looking down on depictions of violence on humans.
** Instead of a port to the Sega CD, VideoGame/Snatcher is ported to the SNES-CD under the helm of Creator/MasahiroSakurai at HAL Labratories. With the SNES-CD way more successful than the Sega CD in the our timeline, the game reaches around 400,000 copies, even with an M rating. The Sega CD version in our timeline? Only a couple thousand copies. And it was rated T.
** VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry was planned for the vanilla SNES as OTL, but Nintendo asked Rare to make it for the SNES-CD instead, signifying that even Nintendo was moving away from developing SNES cartridge games.
** VideoGame/Pulseman is developed for the SNES-CD instead and published by Sony, along with Western releases. (OTL Pulseman only made a North American release via the Sega Channel before made available via the VirtualConsole.) It would be the basis of a relationship between Sony and the game's developer, Creator/GameFreak.
** VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI is purely developed for the SNES-CD instead of being a ported cartridge game. The game is the first in the series to feature lyrical music during the game's classic opera scene (with Celes' part performed by then-unknown singer Kristin Chenoweth). The World of Ruin arc is made more linear, and certain sidequests integrated to the story. ITTL, it is the first game to keep its numbering in Western localizations.
* Nintendo's new deal with Sony includes provisions that Nintendo of America will not censor games for the CD add-on. As a result, Mortal Kombat is released uncut on the SNES-CD. This gets Nintendo in as much hot water as Sega with Congress on the subject of video game violence, the hearings taking place September 1993 instead of December 1993. Following that, Nintendo heavily markets VideoGame/SecretOfMana during the 1993 holiday season as a way to combat the controversy, boosting the game's profile considerably.
* With the early success of the SNES-CD, Sega of America's president Tom Kalinske convinces his bosses in Japan to work with Silicon Graphics. Result? The UsefulNotes/SegaSaturn now has the guts of our timeline's UsefulNotes/Nintendo 64.
* In response to the SNES-CD's big 1993 holiday sales, Sega reorganizes their pre-Saturn plans. The 32X add-on is dropped, and instead comes up with the Mega Charger, which is similar but, at only $50, is much cheaper. It combines the lock-on technology used in OTL's Sonic & Knuckles with processing chips from Silicon Graphics. 30% of the eventual Genesis library would take advantage of it, with a dozen or so titles outright requiring it. Among those games: Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which ITTL includes the Sonic & Knuckles content and becomes a KillerApp for the Mega Charger.
* As part of the Mega Charger push, Sega insists on a port of VideoGame/LunarTheSilverStar for it. A lot of content is lost in the transition, resulting in a substandard port that bombs in the market. This incredibly sours Sega's relations with Creator/WorkingDesigns, which get worse when Sega reveals they can't finance the localization of VideoGame/LunarEternalBlue. As a result, Creator/WorkingDesigns outright leaves Sega's camp, eventually joining Nintendo's.
* invoked Games that were never released outside of Japan during the 16-bit era in OTL get localized or RemadeForTheExport. This includes:
** The second, third, and fifth games in the Franchise/FinalFantasy series, all receiving SNES-CD releases. The former two games are released together (along with the the first game) as Final Fantasy Origins under their original titles, sorting out the problem of Market Based Titles early on before confusion started to really set in; later reprints of the American Final Fantasy II and III are done under their proper names, VideoGame/FinalFantasyIV and V (ITTL, it was V and not VI that got released as III initially).
** A Super Nintendo remake of Mother, becoming this timeline's [=EarthBound=], the game's promotion not using any ToiletHumor. As for the sequel (OTL's VideoGame/EarthBound), it heads for the SNES-CD instead.
** Super Detective Club, a remake of two Famicom Disk System mystery games from Nintendo.
** Franchise/FireEmblem: Mystery of the Emblem gets localized as Fire Emblem.
** Enix, seeing an opening for a since Square was focusing on the SNES-CD instead of the Super Nintendo, localizes VideoGame/DragonQuestV (still a cartridge game) as Dragon Warrior V.
** VideoGame/I gets localized, and practically gives Jerry Falwell a heart attack when he finds out about its subject matter. Despite Falwell's attempts to whip up controversy, it goes mostly ignored in the West, selling around 20,000 copies.
** VideoGame/CastlevaniaRondoOfBlood is made for the SNES-CD and no pared down version for the SNES is made.
* When Apple pulls out of development of the game console they were working on with Bandai, Bandai is left to shoulder the full weight of the failure of the Solaris (TTL's name for the UsefulNotes/Pippin). The company nearly goes bankrupt, saved only by Franchise/PowerRangers merchandise, and to stay afloat, they're forced to sell the VideoGame/Tamagotchi to Creator/Hasbro (who turns it into a smash hit). Ultimately, Sega buys out what's left of the company for a song in 1998, liquidating it and taking control of its [=IPs=].
* Square doesn't develop VideoGame/SecretOfEvermore. As a result, Music/JeremySoule starts his career with Sega instead, with the latter having Jeremy work on the Franchise/Ultima series.

* James Jordan, father of UsefulNotes/MichaelJordan, lives when the criminals that killed him in our history instead target a truck full of video game consoles. With him alive, Michael would stay on the Chicago Bulls for at least the 1993-94 season instead of his one-year retirement to play baseball.
* Polly Klaas is never murdered because her would-be kidnapper tripped over her SNES-CD console, giving her father time to catch and subdue him until police arrived.
* A 21-year-old Marshall Mathers gets gunned down in a dispute over a stolen game console.
* Tonya Harding's plan to take Nancy Kerrigan out of contention in the Olympics is foiled when the man she hired to break her knee slacks off on the job because he was playing too many video games.
* Ray Combs' work on the Series/FamilyFeud FMV game butterflies away his suicide in 1996, and he in turn helps Creator/MaryKayBergman back from the brink as well. Furthermore, a domestic dispute between Music/CourtneyLove and Music/KurtCobain over the latter playing too many video games leads to Cobain getting sent to rehab and eventually getting clean, preventing his suicide.
* Katey Segal's pregnancy is butterflied away, and with it, the Wanker County arc on Series/MarriedWithChildren.
* Butterflies from the success of the video game adaptation of ComicBook/SpiderMan: Power and Responsibility lead to Ben Reilly permanently becoming Spider-Man in the comics, as the game, which features Ben as the main character, causes him to develop many fans. Peter Parker, meanwhile, retires from being Spider-Man so that he can be with Mary Jane. On one hand, most of the widely-derided Clone Saga is averted, but on the other, a BrokenBase develops between Peter Parker fans and Ben Reilly fans.
* DC Comics delays ComicBook/ZeroHour to February 1995 to coincide with the tenth anniversary of ComicBook/CrisisOnInfiniteEarths and becomes a different product altogether. Hal Jordan is still ostensibly the villain as Parallax, who wants to restore the TheMultiverse and Coast City along with it but is instead a pawn of the Time Trapper as part of his plan to use the chronological instability to reshape the universe.
** Hal Jordan performs a HeroicSacrifice to restart the universe and thus vindicates the character after Emerald Twilight.
** Fan backlash after a leaked memo saves the ComicBook/JusticeSocietyOfAmerica from decimation and are given retirement instead.
** PowerGirl dies in a similar fashion to her previous Earth-1 counterpart.
** Franchise/WonderWoman and the Silver Age Hawks have their timelines adjusted and their places on the Justice League of America restored.
* The OJ Simpson case is instead a MurderSuicide, with both OJ and Nicole found dead by Ron Goldman.
* The spat between Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes and Andre Rison in 1994 that, in OTL, ended with her burning down his house ends here with him killing her. The resulting distraction and controversy leads to Rison spending eight years in prison, and Rison's San Francisco 49ers losing the NFC Championship to the Dallas Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys then defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers (who themselves beat the Chargers who won that year's AFC Championship IOTL) in UsefulNotes/SuperBowl XXIX, making them the first NFL team to win three straight Super Bowls. Lopes' death (coming so soon after the aforementioned OJ Simpson MurderSuicide) became the climax of a massive controversy over domestic violence among NFL players, which would eventually lead then-NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue to resign.
* Selena Quintanilla-Pérez survives the attempt on her life that killed her in OTL thanks to butterflies from her husband, Chris Pérez being childhood friends with a successful video game developer. When the success of this friend's game Frederico prompts him to call Chris to remind him of a SideBet the two made, the timing of the call wakes Chris up in time to accompany his wife to her fateful meeting with Yolanda Saldívar, stopping Saldívar when she pulls a gun on Selena.

* Nintendo still starts using the "Play It Loud" slogan mid-1994.
* Despite the availibity of the more powerful Super Nintendo CD, VideoGame/YoshisIsland is still a [=SuperFX=] enhanced cartridge game.
* Nintendo will still undo their DubNameChange for Princess Peach.
* The Houston Rockets still become champions of the 1993-1994 NBA season. The only difference is that their opponents were the Chicago Bulls (with Michael Jordan still playing for them) instead of the New York Knicks.
* Television shows WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse and Series/OnceUponATime, among others, still exist in this timeline, with the latter still starring Creator/JenniferMorrison to boot (even with her personal life taking a drastic turn).

----

* AdaptationExpansion: VideoGame/TheSecretOfMonkeyIsland is ported to the SNES-CD with additional puzzles, locations, and songs. It is considered more well known than the original PC version.
* AllohistoricalAllusion:
** Super Mario World 2 is similar to both VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosWii and VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosU in terms of ExcusePlot. It starts at Princess Peach's castle with a party like Wii, only it's for her return. Bowser and the Koopalings than come in and capture the castle, kicking the Mario Bros. and Yoshi out, ala U.
** In our history, Sega and Bandai considered merging. In this timeline, Sega buys up Bandai in 1998 when the latter is put up for sale.
** Creator/JoeQuesada joked that he would have Peter sell his soul to Mephisto in order to make him Spider-Man again.
* CelebrityEndorsement: UsefulNote/AlGore mentions in an interview that he saw the redeeming value of video games after trying out VideoGame/SecretOfMana, and hopes there would more games like it rather than VideoGame/1.
* CompilationRerelease: Square decides to do remakes of the three NES Franchise/FinalFantasy games for the SNES-CD. The collection gets localized as Final Fantasy Origins and is released before VideoGame/FinalFantasyVI, meaning that game is the first in the series to retain its original numbering.
* UsefulNotes/ConsoleWars:
** The Fourth-And-A-Half Generation becomes more important in the grand scheme of things, as both the SNES-CD and the Sega CD become major players. By the end of 1994, it's clear that Nintendo's won this one, with Sega in a comfortable (if distant) second, while the 3DO, the UsefulNotes/PhilipsCDi (this time without its licensed Mario and Zelda games), and the UsefulNotes/AtariJaguar all bomb like they did in OTL. When it comes to the Fourth Generation "base" consoles, though, Sega is able to close the gap between the Genesis and the Super NES towards the end, thanks to price cuts, focusing on people who can't afford a SNES-CD (even if it means all but giving up on the Sega CD), and extending the Genesis' life with the inexpensive Mega Charger peripheral (with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as its KillerApp) to keep it competitive. Even then, though, the SNES-CD eventually starts taking over by 1995.
** As of the start of 1995, the Fifth Generation is shaping up with Sega prepping the Saturn for its Western release (it's already out in Japan) and Nintendo and Sony still working on a deal for their next console, only coming to an agreement in March. An early also-ran was the Bandai Solaris, TTL's version of the UsefulNotes/Pippin (Apple wisely pulled out of its development), which attempted to beat Nintendo to market but became just as big a white elephant as OTL's machine, nearly bankrupting Bandai (which was only saved by Franchise/PowerRangers merchandise) and leading to their getting bought out by Sega in 1998.
* ContinuityReboot: The VideoGame/Valis series gets a reboot for the SNES-CD. Three games are made for that system before doing a VideoGame3DLeap with Ultra Valis: Knight Of Light for Nintendo's SNES-CD successor, the Ultra Nintendo. The success of the reboot series would establish its developer, Telenet Japan, as a second party for Nintendo.
* DeathByAdaptation: Aunt May peacefully passes away in this timeline's version of ComicBook/TheCloneSaga, and has stayed that way ever since.
* DifferentWorldDifferentMovies: With the Super Nintendo CD on the market, brand new franchises have come into being, as well as different sequels to existing games.
* DomesticAbuse: An alternate version of the OJ Simpson case, combined with Andre Rison accidentally killing Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes when a dispute crossed the line into a fistfight, leads to a much earlier controversy over off-the-field domestic violence among NFL players, twenty years before the Ray Rice scandal did the same in our world.
* DreamTeam:
** The entire story is based on a classic WhatIf dream team in gaming history: Sony and Nintendo working together to make the CD peripheral for the Super NES, instead of Nintendo pulling out of the deal.
** Nintendo enlisted the Jim Henson Company to create FMV cutscenes for this timeline's version of VideoGame/StarFox.
* DuelingGames: VideoGame/MegaManX2 and VideoGame/Pulseman had North American launches in January 1995, so naturally there were comparisons made due to their similarities.
* FollowTheLeader: Not only is Secret of Mana more successful and more notable, it got the attention of one of Tom Kalinske's daughters. The Sega of America president, not wanting to buy a competitor's product for his daughter, pushes for the creation of a similar game, [=MagiQuest=], for the Saturn.
* FromBadToWorse: Despite Sega promoting VideoGame/SonicCD, the game fails to be a KillerApp for the Sega CD, selling to mostly existing Sega CD owners. A week later, Nintendo announces pre-Thanksgiving price cuts of the Super Nintendo CD and [=PlayStation=] combo set, killing whatever remaining interest anyone had in Sega's CD add-on.
* FullMotionVideo: Having two major optical-disc consoles in the early '90s leads to a larger boom in the FMV industry. Unlike OTL, where "FMV" became a byword for shovelware, some of these games are actually pretty good, most notably VideoGame/1 made as a collaboration between Nintendo and the Creator/JimHenson Company that leads to further partnerships down the road (including a popular FMV Muppets game in 1995). That said, there is still quite a bit of notorious crap; some games that only exist in TTL are bad enough to give the Nerd nightmares.
* Futureshadowing: The timeline is scattered with interviews and comments made in the future by various people. Notably, one of them is from Bill Gates of Microsoft, who notes he considered suing to break up one of the major players like how Microsoft was sued, hinting that Microsoft was a bigger underdog when entering the console market.
* GoneHorriblyWrong: Bandai decides to go all in as a competitor to Nintendo/Sony and Sega, using the Pippin technology from Apple. The Bandai Solaris becomes a massive money sink for Bandai, ultimately failing in 1996, and would later lead to the company's liquidation.
* HeyItsThatGuy: invoked A number of FMV games released for the SNES-CD and the Sega CD feature actors who went on to bigger and better things.
** One early title, a medieval fantasy game called Nightfall, is notable for having featured a pre-fame Kelly Hu as a HotWitch, and for having come up in the debates over adult content in games not just for its violence, but also for the stripperiffic outfits her character wore.
** A well-received space shooter called Meteora features Creator/GiancarloEsposito and Creator/MillaJovovich.
** For his 91st episode, WebVideo/TheAngryVideoGameNerd dumps on an utterly wretched 1994 game called Oops!, described as a family-friendly ripoff of VideoGame/NightTrap. One of the more noticeably bad elements of the game is the "acting" by the young actress playing the main character, who the Nerd calls "a no-talent hack". That actress? [[spoiler:A 15-year-old Creator/JenniferMorrison... who shows up (a la Creator/MaraWilson with WebVideo/TheNostalgiaCritic) to mock the game herself. The Nerd then forces her to help him review a whole slew of bad fairy-tale games, what with her being the star of Series/OnceUponATime. (The kicker is that, in TTL, Creator/JamesRolfe is married to Morrison, with WordOfGod stating that they'll get to the story of how they met eventually.)]]
** While she didn't appear in an FMV game, a pre-Broadway Creator/KristinChenoweth is featured in Final Fantasy VI as the singing voice of Celes during "Aria di Mezzo Carraterre" in the famous opera scene.
* HeyItsThatVoice: invoked The careers of a number of voice actors also go quite differently.
** The game Squad Four has Creator/CharlesMartinet, in a big break from voicing Mario, doing the voice of the main character Shad. Former Mouseketeer (and later Crystal Gem) Deedee Magno voices the ActionGirl Rebecca, while Michael Reisz and Creator/TomKenny voice the other two heroes, Marcus and Lane.
** Instead of starting her video game voice acting career with Claire in VideoGame/ResidentEvil2, Creator/AlysonCourt does her first video game four years earlier by voicing the little girl protagonist in the action-adventure game Jewels of the Realm.
* KillerApp:
** VideoGame/SuperMarioKart and Final Fantasy: New Generation are this for the SNES-CD at launch. Later killer apps for it include Super Mario World 2, VideoGame/1, VideoGame/1, VideoGame/SecretOfMana, Squad FourA sci-fi shooter that's described as a mix of OTL's VideoGame/JetForceGemini, VideoGame/SinAndPunishment, and Star Fox, and VideoGame/DonkeyKongCountry.
** Sega doesn't have a killer app for the Sega CD, which plays second fiddle to the SNES-CD for its entire lifespan; they hoped that Sonic CD would be that game, but while it got rave reviews, it didn't sell many consoles. They did, however, have a big one for the Mega Charger: Sonic the Hedgehog 3. While it also released on the Genesis (where it became the first game in history to sell a million copies in one day), the Mega Charger version featured a massive amount of new levels and bosses and pushed more Mega Chargers than any other game. Later attempts at killer apps for it failed, however, as the ports of both Star Wars Arcade and VideoGame/Doom turned out to be fairly sloppy and rushed.
** In Japan, VideoGame/VirtuaFighter proves to be a minor killer app for the UsefulNotes/SegaSaturn.
* LegacyCharacter: ComicBook/SpiderMan was made into this, with Peter Parker retiring to focus on his marriage to Mary Jane and Ben Reilly taking over the role.
* MoralGuardians: Jerry Falwell's reaction to Franchise/ShinMegamiTensei is to call it "the most insidiously devilish thing I've ever seen." Unfortunately, since it only sold 20,000 copies in North America, he couldn't whip up a good moral panic over it.
* MultipleEndings: This timeline's version of VideoGame/SecretOfMana has three of them.
* MurderSimulators: The Senate hearings over video game violence still happen, three months earlier than OTL thanks to the uncensored release of VideoGame/1 on the SNES-CD.
* MurderSuicide: O.J. Simpson kills Nicole Brown before killing himself. Ron Goldman in this timeline would discover the bodies.
* TheNineties: So far, the entire timeline takes place here, though there are occasional references to future events.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: The SNES-CD add on so thoroughly overshadows the original SNES that Nintendo eventually drops the requirement that publishers must release a SNES cartridge game for every SNES-CD game they plan to release.
* PortingDisaster: invoked The SNES-CD port of VideoGame/AloneInTheDark, and the Mega Charger version of VideoGame/LunarTheSilverStar.
* RichardNixonTheUsedCarSalesman: A number of figures from OTL go on different career paths.
** Voice actress Jennifer Stigile wins the first season of Series/AmericanIdol instead of Music/KellyClarkson.
** Creator/AlexHirsch, instead of going into animation, becomes an indie game developer -- together with his twin sister Ariel.
** Joseph Lieberman is mentioned to be Vice President of the United States in 2006.
* So My Kids Can Play: The reason why Sega of America CEO Tom Kalinske commissions [=MagiQuest=] as a KillerApp for the Saturn. His daughter wanted an SNES-CD so that she could play VideoGame/SecretOfMana, but her father, what with his job, couldn't have any Nintendo products in the house. To make it up for her, he promised her that the Saturn would have an RPG even better than Mana.
* SparedByTheAdaptation: Valis: Rebirth, the SNES-CD retelling of the first VideoGame/Valis game, had Reiko, friend of the game's protagonist Yuko, survive at the end. Reiko would become a playable character in the sequel to Rebirth.
* SpiritualLicensee: invoked The Creator/Ubisoft RPG The Darkest Ritual is described as being heavily influenced by the Film/BuffyTheVampireSlayer movie. (It came out in 1995, so the TV series is still two years away.)
* Tuckerization: The protagonists of [=MagiQuest=] are named after Tom Kalinske's daughters.
* UpdatedRerelease: VideoGame/FinalFantasyIV and VideoGame/FinalFantasyV get released for SNES-CD with improved graphics and sounds (and in the case of IV, improved localization).
* WeAreStrugglingTogether: Sega so far avoids the conflict between their American and Japanese branches that plagued them in the original timeline. With the Sega CD not even being a niche success in the US, Sega of Japan is convinced not to push the 32X as a stopgap for the Saturn, and instead develop the Mega Charger as a cheap cartridge-based accessory for the Genesis. It also helps there's no true fifth-gen competitor for the Saturn to release against during 1995.
* WhatAnIdiot: Discussed InUniverse, Bandai choosing to market the Pippin hardware after Apple decided to drop the whole Pippin initative.
--> They ended up making the same mistake that Phillips, Pioneer, Atari, and 3DO had made before them: the combined juggernaut of Nintendo, Sony, and Sega was just too tough of a nut to crack.
