The book begins with a sixteen year old boy, Michael, who lives with his mother and father on a small island in Greece. Michael has dreams of joining the Venetian fleet, which would be impossible for him due to his lack of Venetian citizenship, but when the Venetian army is decimated by the plague and is forced to accept non-citizens. Michael finally has a chance to fulfill his dreams and avoid living the monotonous life his parents live. Unfortunately his journey doesn't go the way he plans.
