* KillTheParentRaiseTheChild: Tahiri Veila is a human raised by Tuskens, in penitence for having killed her birth parents [[PoorCommunicationKills under mistaken assumptions]]. Her father and mother had rescued the injured Tusken Sliven, who thanked them by teaching them how to fight with a ''gaderffii'' staff, but Sliven's tribe witnessed their sparring and mistook it for their tribesman being attacked.

!!Tropes:
* BadassBystander: In ''Lyric's World,'' several young Melodies help Anakin and Tahiri fight back against a snake monster by throwing rocks at it. Given how they've grown up on a DeathWorld, they have quite a bit of practice.
* DeathWorld: The moon of Yavin 8 is occupied by sentient aliens called Melodies and all kinds of predators (avians, rodents, snakes, and the vicious Purella spiders) that are constantly trying to eat the Melodies. The Melodies start sending their Force-sensitive children to the Jedi Academy to learn combat techniques to fight back.
* FakeWizardry: The final two books feature Orloc, a supposed Dark Side mage, who turns out to be just a conman using various gadgets to make it look like he can use the Force.
* IJustWantToBeBadass: The second half of the series features a boy named Uldir Lochett, who wants to be a Jedi despite only being mildly Force-sensitive, and has an inflated view of his own importance and destiny (although he does get some CharacterDevelopment).
* InnocuouslyImportantEpisode: The series has fairly low stakes, but it also introduces Tahiri Veila and sets the stage for her ChildhoodFriendRomance with Anakin, which plays a big role in the ''Literature/NewJediOrder'' books and beyond.
* KnightOfCerebus: The second book is at its darkest when the Purella spider is the [=POV=] character and fantasizes about capturing children to eat alive.
* NoAntagonist: The first four books don't have any antagonists besides some dangerous predators (although one in ''Lyric's World'' gets a decent amount of page-time and ItCanThink characterization). Anakin and Tahiri spend the first three books trying to free the spirits of several children who the Sith Lord Exar Kun imprisoned, but Kun met his final defeat [[Literature/JediAcademyTrilogy back when Anakin was a baby]], so he has no direct role in the series.
* OurMermaidsAreDifferent: The Melodies of Yavin 8 hatch from eggs, live on land for the first twenty years of their lives, then metamorphize into mermaids, and find it harder to breathe air the older they get.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Tahiri's parents rescued Sliven, an injured Tusken Raider, in the desert, and while he was recuperating, he taught them ''gaderffii'' combat in gratitude. Sliven's friends came looking for him and saw Tahiri's father swinging a ''gaderffii'' staff while Sliven looked hurt and helpless. They thought Tahiri's parents were attacking Sliven and killed them before he could explain.
