* DismemberingTheBody: Standard procedure for werewolves who have just killed a vampire is to rip the vampire into pieces, then burn the pieces.
* DistressBall: Jacob ends up grabbing this when he shoves Leah out of the way just to be crushed by a Newborn Vampire. The book attempts to make it out that Leah was the one in distress because she was fighting the vampire alone to begin with, but... both she and her little brother have defeated newborns in single combat before, and nothing about this fight really necessitated Jacob shoving her out of the way. [[TheScapegoat Of course, all the blame for this goes to Leah]]. Not to mention the entire reason Jacob gets hurt is that he was too slow for the vampire, making this a TooDumbToLive moment on an even higher level - Leah is the fastest werewolf.

* VehicularSabotage: Edward does this to Bella's truck to keep her from going to La Push and spending time with werewolves.
* WhosYourDaddy: This is a minor, [[AbortedArc unresolved]] subplot with Embry, who turns out to be a [[OurWerewolvesAreDifferent shapeshifter]], which means he has ancestry in the native American Quileute tribe. The thing is, his mother is from an entirely different tribe so he can only get this from his father and the only men who could have fathered Embry were married to women other than Embry's mother at the time. It's an uncomfortable subject that most of the pack (some of whom, logically, must be Embry's half-siblings) tries to avoid. (''The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide'' would later list Embry on the Uley family tree, effectively confirming Joshua Uley as his father.)

* TactfulTranslation: Attempted, but ultimately subverted. Edward tries to give a more polite wording to what Jacob is thinking, but that just annoys Jacob, who growls at Edward to translate accurately.

* OutlivingOnesOffspring: Quil's grandfather, Old Quil, makes an appearance in this book. WordOfGod says that Quil's father, who Edward calls Quil Ateara Sr., is dead before the beginning of the series. This is implied in the series itself in that Quil's mother and grandfather are both mentioned as being around during the series but his father isn't. The only reference to Quil's father contrasts him with Sam's father, who "isn't much of a father".

!!This book contains examples of:

* AdaptationalHairstyleChange: Bree Tanner was described as having chin-length hair. She had Creator/JodelleFerland's natural waist-length hair in the film.
* AnalogyBackfire: Bella compares herself to Cathy of ''Literature/WutheringHeights'' and her love for Edward to Cathy's love for Heathcliff... seemingly forgetting there is actually an ''Isabella'' in the same novel who ''does'' marry Heathcliff... to [[DomesticAbuse disastrous effect]].
* ArtisticLicenseEconomics: Rosalie explains in her backstory that her family was well off during the Great Depression because her dad was a banker. Part of the reason why the Depression got as bad as it did to begin with is that most if not all of the US banks went bankrupt after stock market investors hastily withdrew their inflated shares to cut losses after the stock market crashed. Since banks were losing more money than they could cover, it's very unlikely that a banker, of all people, would have been doing any better than anyone else. Then again, perhaps her father was a Joe Kennedy type...
* BarredFromTheAfterlife: Taha Aki believing this about himself, as a result of Utlapa stealing his body, was a major part of the anger which allowed his wolf to transform into a human.
* BetterPartnerAssertion: Jacob repeatedly tells both Bella and Edward that he thinks he would be a [[VampireWerewolfLoveTriangle better romantic option]] for Bella. He cites the following reasons: Bella wouldn't have to give up her human life and become a 'monster' to be with him, they could be intimate without having to constantly worry about Jacob accidentally killing her due to bloodlust, Edward is the first and only boyfriend she's ever had so she can't know for definite he's 'the one', that her love for Edward is more like a drug addiction than anything, and that he made Bella happy again after Edward broke her heart in ''Literature/NewMoon''.
* BloodKnight: Alice shows shades of this when she finds out that Edward will be sitting out of the fight with the newborn army at Bella's request, even stating that he is going to be missing all of the fun.
* BloodSplatteredWeddingDress: Rosalie after being turned into a vampire took revenge on her ex-fiancé and his friends after they raped and left her for dead in an alleyway. She wore a wedding dress to do so. She says she made sure none of them splattered blood on it, though.
* CampfireCharacterExploration: Bella is introduced to the Quileute tribe's histories by listening to the chief's story by a campfire. Unusual example because it's more of the character exploration for an entire tribe.
Not to mention the entire reason Jacob gets hurt is that he was too slow for the vampire making this an WhatAnIdiot moment on an even higher level - Leah is the fastest werewolf.
* DroppedABridgeOnHer: Bree Tanner. After being given focus throughout the book and even surviving the New Born battle, she is unceremoniously killed by the Volturi as a testament to their ruthlessness.
* EnemyMine: The climax has the Quileutes and Cullens working together to defeat a vampire army headed by Victoria.
* HarmfulHealing: When Jacob's ribs get broken, the others have to keep re-breaking them because they keep healing incorrectly.
* HeirloomEngagementRing: Edward gifts Bella his mother's antique engagement ring with his proposal.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: Rosalie hates being a vampire and has admitted she'd give up her beauty and immortality just to have the opportunity to have a child of her own.
* KillerBearHug: Jasper instructs the Cullens and the Quileutes on fighting the newborn vampire army that are coming to wipe them out. He explains that while exceptionally strong, they are vulnerable due to lack of control and technique. The most important thing is that they don't get their arms around anyone as they'll use that strength to crush their target to a pulp. Sure enough, this is exactly what happens to [[spoiler:Jacob]], the only one of the defending side to be hurt.
* LoveHurts: Jasper initially believed that Maria, the vampire who had turned him, truly returned his affections. However, she was still hung up over losing her mate, and since vampires mate for life, he knew it would literally take ''forever'' for her to get over him.
* NewPowersAsThePlotDemands: Victoria's power to always know where to hide was basically a way for the author to HandWave how a pack of werewolves and the entire Cullen family together couldn't catch her sooner.
* OneWordTitle: The name of the book is "Eclipse".
* PreppyName: Rosalie's ex-fiance Royce King II.
* RapeAsBackstory: [[spoiler:Rosalie's backstory includes this element.]]
* RescueRomance: Emmett was rescued from a bear by Rosalie. The two of them are a romantic couple.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: Carlise helps to take care of the wounded Quileutes, despite the centuries-old feud between the two groups. This helps to bridge the gap between the two clans.
* SecretChaser: Bella mentions that Renee has the capacity to become one to her.
* TheTalk: Bella has an exceptionally awkward one with Charlie. In the novel it just comes across as fairly uncomfortable, but in the movie Kristen and Billy make it hilarious.
* TransEqualsGay: The Quilleute shapeshifters' discomfort with opposite genders sharing sexual memories through their telepathy is characterized as gender confusion.
* VampireBitesSuck: Extremely painful venom and one of the few things that can actually leave a mark on vampire skin.
* VehicularSabotage: Edward does this to Bella's truck to keep her from going to La Push and spending time with werewolves.
* WifeHusbandry: Quil and Claire.
* WithUsOrAgainstUs: After her breakdown in book II, Bella divides her acquaintances at school into "friends" and "enemies" based on how loyal they were to her after what amounts to a four-month-long silent treatment.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: Victoria had planned to do this with [[spoiler:Riley]] under the guise of "being in love" with him, which Edward tried to warn [[spoiler:Riley]] about.
