** The radio show based on the book lampshades this trope when Dirk successfully guesses who's at the door, much to the amazement of his companion. "Just my depressingly accurate powers of prediction," says Dirk. "You must be able to clean up on the ponies then!" says the police officer. "That's the depressing part," replies Dirk despondently, "I can't!"

* MisappliedPhlebotinum: Reg has a [[spoiler:time machine]] and he uses it to watch television. Specifically, he travels back in time to catch television shows that he missed. He claims this is simpler than learning how to use a video recorder.
-->'''Dirk''':You have a [[spoiler:time machine]] and you use it for... watching television?

* TechnologyMarchesOn: Modern readers probably won't understand the significance of Gordon Way having a car phone and tape deck in his Mercedes. Or know what an "Apple Macintosh" is, or why it's a big deal that Richard [=McDuff=] has six of them in his apartment. There's even a reference to a "Mac II"! In fact, to show how technologically savvy [=McDuff=] is, Adams describes how the character records his musical compositions "in sequencer files on the computers rather than on tape". And on it goes. All of these references seemed really modern and cool in 1987 when the novel was published but are rather quaint now.
