Bookish seventh-grader Jessica balks when her English teacher pairs her up with Daphne, the quietest and most picked-on girl in her class, to create a picture book for a local contest. As they work together, Jessica and Daphne--plus Hope, Daphne's little sister--forge a strong bond, enough to withstand the teasing of the popular kids. But it doesn't take long for Jessica to discover a terrible secret that Daphne is keeping from everyone at school.
