* ''Manga/RurouniKenshin'':
In ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia''
** During Midoriya's first conversation with Endeavor, the latter expresses the hope that his son Shoto, whom Endeavor groomed to be a hero who will surpass the #1 Hero All Might, will triumph over All Might's protege, Midoriya. Midoriya then replies that he isn't All Might, and Shoto isn't Endeavor. Much later, during the fight with [[spoiler:Dabi, who's just revealed that he's Endeavor's eldest son Toya]], Midoriya declares that Endeavor is trying to change, "And guess what?! You aren't Endeavor!"
** At the beginning start of the series, Kenshin says: "A sword Midoriya declares that this is a weapon. Kenjutsu the art story of murder...But, how he will become the world's greatest hero. Much later, in Chapter 297, as All For One [[spoiler:breaks his original body out of Tartarus Prison]], he declares, "This will be the story of how I became the greatest demon lord of all!"
** After defeating All For One in Kamino Ward, All Might declares, "You're next!", which sounds
like Miss Kaoru’s [[TechnicalPacifist idealism]] better than its true nature." It's revealed a warning to the villains still at large, but is actually a way of telling Midoriya, his successor, that his time as the first sentence Symbol of Peace is his mentor's philosophy, and he quotes it back to Kenshin to remind him that real life is over. In Chapter 316, All For One leaves a CrapsackWorld.
** A one-person IronicEcho happens when, after Saitou reappears in Kenshin's life, he mutters to himself
recording for Midoriya saying that he will never change, no longer has any interest in All Might, and that Kenshin will revert has now moved on to his old ways sooner or later. When Kenshin adamantly refuses Midoriya, concluding with the same phrase.
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' tends
to do so, Saitou amends his statement as this a sign lot:
** One of these triggers Sakura's first JerkassRealization. Naruto asks to have lunch with her, only for her to coldly brush him off with the line "You're annoying". Later, she makes the mistake of insulting Naruto's lack of parents in front of [[SoleSurvivor Sasuke,]] who coldly brushes her off with the line "You're annoying".
** Tsunade said
that becoming Hokage was "a fool's game". Later, Orochimaru says the same thing when Tsunade protects Naruto.
** After their first battle, Sasuke coolly asked the frightened Naruto "You all right, scaredy cat?" And later, in the Forest of Death, when Sasuke was the one freaking out and about to be attacked by a giant snake (during a battle with [[BigBad Orochimaru,]] at the time by far the most powerful character yet introduced), Naruto stops the snake just in time and calmly asked Sasuke the same question.
** When Sasuke departs the village and receives his first power-up,
he's accepted this.
** There's also an action ironic echo:
told that in order to gain the first time Kenshin power he must die (as in, taking a pill that puts him into a death-like state). Four years later when learning how to be a sage, Naruto is told he must die (although it turns out that the toad telling him this was MetaphoricallyTrue).
** "THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SACRED TEMPLE, MOTHERFUCKER!"
*** The above happens when Naruto
and Aoshi face off, Kenshin defeats him by executing Bee pull a BarehandedBladeBlock. In the lead-up to the final showdown, Aoshi prank on Yamato. Bee tells Yamato that using a clone is disarmed by an opponent mirroring his sword style, but he pulls off a one-handed BarehandedBladeBlock with a spiffy OneLiner obliquely referring to the useless because "THIS IS A SACRED TEMPLE, MOTHAFUCKA! The previous event.
* ''Anime/TransformersCybertron'' has a funny one.
--> '''Evac''': What are you
generations watch over this place, your bitch-ass tricks ain't gonna fool no one!" when he suggests doing here? What do you want?
--> '''[[ManipulativeBastard Sideways:]]''' Sorry,
so to Naruto. (Yamato suggests this because he believes the headless statues are previous Jinchuuriki). Naruto puts his head in the hole and starts screaming. When Yamato pulls him out, his head is below his collar and Yamato is clearly horrified. Bee, however, knows that it's just a joke and he and Naruto pull a laugh, while Bee admits he did the same thing and the statues are just broken. Cue Yamato getting pissed off and yelling "THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SACRED TEMPLE, 'MOTHERFUCKER'!", mostly at Bee, but if I told you then I'd have at Naruto, too.
** During their fight in the Chuunin Exams, Neji asked why Naruto tried so hard
to tell everybody, change his fate. Naruto responds, "Because I was called a failure." Fastforward over 400 chapters and it wouldn't be much Naruto asks Neji why [[spoiler: he sacrificed himself to save Naruto and Hinata.]] Neji responds, "Because I was called a genius."
** At the start of the Shippuden, Naruto jumps to the top
of a secret.
--> '''Evac:''' Smart-alec. Crosswise, you got anything?
--> '''Crosswise:''' Well, I heard someone say something about
nearby building to look at the village and proclaims it hasn't changed at all. Much later, [[spoiler:Sasuke takes a [[MacGuffin Cyber Planet Key...similar location, only to muse the village has changed a lot.]]

Years later, Kakashi throws these words, adding that, "And those who don't have the decency to respect the memories of their comrades are the worst." Why is it impactful?[[spoiler: The person who Kakashi says this to is Obito himself, who has become the BigBad and revealed to be one of the perpetrators of the miseries to the major characters, Kakashi included.]]

* In ''Manga/OnePiece'', minor villain Bellamy condescendingly asks Luffy (who he believes to have a 30 million belli bounty, as compared to Bellamy's 55 million) "Do
you even know how to throw a punch?" Luffy, who doesn't care much what an idiot like that says, doesn't reply until Bellamy ''really'' pisses him off by further insulting the friends he'd already beaten up. In a SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome (of the entire series), as Bellamy rockets around on his springs while dramatically taunting him, Luffy calmly lifts up one fist and echoes "Do I know how to throw a punch?" He then takes the guy out ''[[CurbStompBattle with one punch.]]''
** When Marshall D. "Blackbeard" Teach reveals the PowerNullifier aspect of his Devil Fruit powers, he states that all of the overconfident fruit users of the world will be powerless against him. He later tries this against [[spoiler: Whitebeard,]] and promptly gets a chunk gouged out of his shoulder for his trouble. [[spoiler: Whitebeard]] then notes that Blackbeard is too reliant on ''his'' Devil Fruit Power.
** Bellamy has yet another one. When he meets Luffy and finds out that Luffy is a dreamer, he taunts him and says "because you are busy chasing a dream, you don't notice the treasures lying right at your feet". Much later, when Bellamy talks to a guy named Tank Lepanto who has essentially betrayed his country by pretending to fight for it and then revealing himself to be allied with an evil tactician from another country. Bellamy asks why he's doing this and he replies that he was paid well. Tank follows up with: "I'd rather my pick up money right at my feet than
I'd have chase a dream". Bellamy comments that these words make his ears hurt, implying that he has now taken the same stance to tell everybody.dreams as Luffy.
** And just before Luffy confronts Doflamingo, Bellamy is fighting Luffy again and is clearly heavily torn up about it. Much like last time they fought, Luffy takes him down with one punch, but the moment is anything but awesome and much more sad.

-->'''Ryo''': A professional must always keep a keen eye on their surroundings. If you, City Hunter's assistant, were beaten by a mere robber, you'll become the laughingstock of the whole world.
-->'''Kaori''': (holding a piece of broken concrete) Mind your own business! I was planning a counterattack!
* In ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'', [[spoiler:Grisha Yeager]] is told, "You started this story, didn't you?" at two major points in his life. The first is when, after [[spoiler:Grisha's son Zeke betrays him, resulting in the deaths of the Eldian Restorationist cell]], Kruger tells him to carry on with his mission despite his regrets, saying he took an interest in [[spoiler:Grisha]] after the latter chose to go beyond the wall [[spoiler:of the Eldian internment zone]]. The second time is when [[spoiler:Grisha]] is hesitating to do his most horrific action- [[spoiler:killing Frieda and her family to take the Founding Titan's power]]- and [[spoiler:his son Eren comes from the future]] and gives him a BreakingLecture concluding with this phrase.
* At the start of ''Manga/FailedPrincesses'', Hiro dumps his girlfriend Fujishiro, [[BreakTheHaughty a rather vain gyaru who's reduced to tears by the breakup]]. Immediately afterward, Kurokawa, the girl Fujishiro bullied, tells Fujishiro that "Anyone would feel sad when the person they love says such horrible things to them!" In Chapter 35, Kurokawa's words come back to her in a flashback, [[spoiler:helping her realize how much she hurt Fujishiro by pushing her away after Fujishiro made a LoveConfession to Kurokawa]].
* Tsukumizu, the mangaka of ''Manga/GirlsLastTour'', often uses this. A particular example is when Chito and Yuuri get into an elevator with the map-maker Kanazawa, and acrophobic Chito becomes nervous as the elevator ascends, asking why the engineers didn't think to put a chain-link fence, as there are many open spots in the railings, to which Kanazawa comments that they probably thought it would be a waste of materials. Cue the elevator stalling, Kanazawa losing the maps he's spent his lifetime working on, subsequently breaking down, and asking why the engineers didn't think to put a chain-link fence on the elevator...

* A nonverbal variant occurs in the first part of ''Anime/FiveCentimetersPerSecond''. Takaki had written a letter to Akari containing his compiled thoughts, [[spoiler:only to have it get accidentally blown away by the wind before he could pass it to her in person. As his train leaves Iwafune Station after their meeting, Akari takes out a letter of her own that she had written but didn't pass to him ''Anime/YuGiOh'' has an example during the meeting.]]
* ''LightNovel/TheDevilIsAPartTimer'': While working at her helpline job, Emi gets an unwanted call from Maou, whom she tells she's working right now and he knows it, then asks him what he
semi-finals of the Duelist Kingdom arc (in the dub), when [[TheLancer Joey]] duels [[SmugSnake Bandit Keith.]] This comes after Bandit Keith leads Joey straight into a trap:
-->'''Bandit Keith''': ''(laughs)'' You should have seen the look on your loser face, you dweeb! When your swordsman's own attack toasted him? It
was doing. Maou explains priceless!
** Then, after Keith falls for one of Joey's traps:
--->'''Joey''': Not bad, huh? I only wish you could have seen the look on your face when that Metalzoa of yours got shish kebabed! It was priceless.
** In Season 1, Kaiba threatens
that he bought a computer for Urushihara (Lucifer's identity on Earth) to discover he is a good hacker. Later on, while Maou is at his job, Emi storms in and demands to talk to him, where he feeds her the line she gave him not long ago.
--> '''Maou:''' I'm working right now and you know it. What do you think you're doing?\\
'''Emi:''' You started it while I was- shut up. I see what you did just there.
* This trope is PlayedForLaughs in ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf''. In the episode "Curse of the Scroll", a scuffle between Ranma and Genma inadvertently causes a talisman come off from a scroll, releasing the entity drawn on it -- a badly-drawn female panda, which wishes for a night out with a "boyfriend" before going back into the scroll. Ranma eagerly volunteers Genma (in his panda form, natch) to Painting-panda, saying to Genma: "Don't you feel sorry for her, pop?" Painting-panda, however, rejects Genma at once and takes a liking to RANMA instead, prompting Genma to prevent Ranma from running away with one hand while [[TalkingWithSigns holding a sign with the words "Don't you feel sorry for her, boy?" with the other.]] Ranma ends up as Painting-panda's "boyfriend" for that night, if reluctantly.
* ''Manga/TheQuintessentialQuintuplets'': At one point, [[{{Tsundere}} Nino]] condescendingly tells Fuutarou that there would probably be "at least one girl on this vast world" that
will fall in love with a "[[BrutalHonesty guy with zero tact]]" like him, only to eventually end up falling for him herself. She repeats from the same words during her LoveConfession in Chapter 60, and even adds "[[LampshadeHanging Well, that's me! Too bad, huh?]]"

** During Midoriya's first conversation with Endeavor,
castle's battlement if Yugi wins the latter expresses the hope that his son Shoto, whom Endeavor groomed duel, causing Yugi to hesitate out of fear of killing Kaiba. In Season 5, Yugi once again faces a similar decision except this time he is facing [[spoiler: Yami Yugi/Atem]]. Yugi hesitates once again as [[spoiler: Yami Yugi needs to be defeated in a hero who will surpass duel to "die" and go to the #1 Hero All Might, will triumph over All Might's protege, Midoriya. Midoriya then replies that he isn't All Might, and Shoto isn't Endeavor. Much later, during afterlife]] but this time, Yugi carries through to win the duel.
* ''Anime/YuGiOhArcV'': Yuya's "The fun has just begun" line is mainly used by people with ''really twisted'' ideas of what "fun" is.

** The resident badass, demonic, [[{{Bishonen}} red-haired pretty boy]] [[TheChessmaster Kurama]] gets into a
fight with [[spoiler:Dabi, a demonic bomber named Karasu. Early on in the fight Karasu seems to have the upper hand and as a result mimics putting a pistol to his head and saying ''bang,'' indicating to Kurama that he should just simply shoot himself rather than continue fighting Karasu. About ten seconds later, Kurama transforms into his much more powerful true form and suddenly it's Karasu who's just revealed that he's Endeavor's eldest son Toya]], Midoriya declares that Endeavor is trying to change, "And guess what?! You aren't Endeavor!"

** In
the story of how he will become the world's greatest hero. Much later, in Chapter 297, as All For One [[spoiler:breaks English dub, Elder Toguro turns his original hand into a giant knife and mockingly claims his mother always wanted him to be a surgeon, when Kuwabara turns his Spirit Sword into a giant disc blade to strike every part of his body out of Tartarus Prison]], at once, Kuwabara claims his mother always wanted him to be an exterminator, as he declares, "This will be the story of how I became the greatest demon lord of all!"
** After defeating All For One in Kamino Ward, All Might declares, "You're next!", which sounds
swats him like a warning to the villains still at large, but is actually a way of telling Midoriya, his successor, that his time as the Symbol of Peace is over. In Chapter 316, All For One leaves a recording for Midoriya saying that he no longer has any interest in All Might, and has now moved on to Midoriya, concluding with the same phrase.

** When Kaori offers to disguise herself as one of the auditioners to help monitor the audition stage, Ryo dismisses her by asking what happens should her disguise as a woman fail[[note]] (Kaori responds by striking him with a hammer with the words "I'm a woman!" written on it)[[/note]]. On the day of the audition, Ryo takes a fancy with a woman he doesn't recognize (right down to his GagPenis ''literally acting up''), only for said woman to reveal herself to be Kaori with a wig. Cue Ryo nervously covering up his crotch.
-->'''Kaori''': What's wrong? Didn't you say I'm a girl with no sex appeal?
** Shortly after the scenario above, Kaori is getting ready for her audition and feels nervous, and the following exchange ensues:
-->'''Ryo''': Relax! There's no idiot here who will hire a transgender as their main star.
-->'''Kaori''': Then the one who's gotten a [[UnusualEuphemism mokkori]] from a transgender must be a bigger idiot.[[note]]It would become a BrickJoke at the end of the arc, as the studio manager who hires Ryo to bodyguard the auditioning women would suggest for Kaori to star in a movie, albeit in the role of a transvestite woman.[[/note]]
** After [[BigDamnHeroes Ryo fends off two thugs who try to take a woman by force]], he says to her "it looks like someone's out to get you" and suggests for them to discuss things elsewhere. She then says "it looks like someone's out to get you" to him as she sees Kaori behind Ryo, with a [[HyperspaceMallet hammer]] headed his way.
** On Omibozu's first day tending to Cat's Eye Cafe alongside Miki, Ryo pokes fun at him by claiming [[WifeHusbandry Omibozu set it all up, raising Miki while she was a child until she was old enough to fall in love with him]]. Shortly thereafter, Sara enters with her nanny in the hope of getting Ryo to protect them. When Ryo express no interest in helping them, Omibozu suggests for Ryo to take the job, arguing that [[WifeHusbandry Sara will grow into a beautiful woman in a few years and Ryo will be set for life with Sara's potential inheritance]][[note]]as she was born in a wealthy family[[/note]]. Ryo takes the job, even if not initially, but he's more fixated on the nanny.
