* Meta moment: The Original Star Trek series ended on the Federation making peace with their long-time enemies, the Klingons. Exactly in line with the original creator's vision of a peaceful and post-scarcity future where the only goal was peaceful exploration. The Federation-Klingon war ended not on the destruction of one side, but on peace and cooperation.

** The novelization actually has [=McCoy=] mentally note exactly that, the trial is a KangarooCourt, ''everyone'' knows it's a KangarooCourt and Colonel Worf is still doing his damnest to defend them as their councilor.

-->'''Sulu''': You'll find that more happens on the bridge of a starship than just carrying out orders and observing regulations. There is a sense of loyalty to the men and women you serve with; a sense of family. Those two men on trial... I served with them for a long time. I owe them my life a dozen times over. And right now they're in trouble, and I'm going to help them; let the regulations be damned.
-->'''Tuvok''': Sir, that is a most illogical line of reasoning.
-->'''Sulu''': You better believe it. Helm, engage!

** The novelization actually has [=McCoy=] mentally note exactly that, the fact that Colonel Worf is genuinely there to defend them, with such observations as the fact that Kirk and [=McCoy=] weren't identified as the assassin's, and asking how the assassin's could be walking if the gravity was out.

** Although it's a tense scene, it demonstrates Sulu's UndyingLoyalty to his old crew. The ''Enterprise'' is getting stomped by Chang, ''Excelsior'' is on the way, but still several minutes out at warp speed. Keep in mind that according to both WordOfGod and supplemental materials, Sulu's command is everything he's ever wanted in life. ''Excelsior'''s helmsman warns that she'll fly apart if they push the warp drive any harder. Sulu, knowing his friends are in mortal danger, snarls, "Well, fly her apart, then!"
