* Mace comes to the conclusion that even though Depa’s plan might have stopped the war, it would have killed Anakin Skywalker. And that if he is the Chosen One, he should be saved at all costs, even if every other Jedi in the galaxy should die, because he’s the ultimate hope against the Sith. Despite his previous caution with and mistrust of Anakin, Mace ultimately comes to believe in him. And though he will soon die in his attempt to kill Darth Sidious courtesy of Anakin cutting off his hand, his Jedi instincts will turn out to have been right all along, when [[Film/ReturnOfTheJedi Anakin turns on Sidious and kills him to save his son]], many years later.

** Even better? In the ''Revenge of the Sith'' novelization, also written by Stover, Yoda comes to the conclusion, while dueling Sidious, that no Jedi could possibly defeat him by conventional means--Sidious has spent too long training himself to battle Jedi and counter their tactics. The ''only'' way the Jedi could win was thanks to Anakin.

* In a twisted way, Vastor always referring to Mace as ''doshalo,'' because they are the last of the Windu clan. Even Kar Vastor, deep down, cares for the Five Pillars.

** Hearing about how the Windu clan is all but gone, Mace remarks in his journal that he would change the story if he could--not because they're his people, but because he would change every such story if he could.

* Despite everything, Mace shows an incredible amount of faith and trust in Nick--very possibly the first person to do so. And Nick never lets him down.

** As he watches every one of the prisoners he swore to rescue being safely taken away, he thinks to himself that the only reward he seeks is for them not to think of Jedi with hatred in their hearts. It's impossible to know whether or not they will, especially given that the Purge and the Empire are right around the corner, but it's also sweet to think that actions like this may one day lead to people risking their lives for the Rebellion and the New Republic.

* One of the Balawai prisoners kneels before Mace and starts pleading for the lives of his children. Mace tells him to knock it off--Jedi are the servants of the people, not the other way around. Naturally, he goes ahead to save the man and his children.
* When the girls plead with Mace to protect their families, he thinks to himself that if it were up to him, no one would hurt anyone. Anywhere. Ever.
* For a few shining moments, Mace is ''almost'' able to convince the Balawai that he's not their enemy.
* One of the few times when Mace comes the closest to falling to the Dark Side is when innocent civilians are being massacred, and more specifically, when [[PapaWolf Terrel]] is murdered by Vastor. Even after knowing what Terrel did, Mace is still furious and saddened by the boy's death.
* Having spent the whole book struggling with the question of what to do when there's no right answer, Mace finally comes to an epiphany--that even when there's no good result, what you choose still matters. [[ArcWords You don't need to win. All you have to do is fight]]. Why do the Korunnai fight the jungle? ''Because they are descended from Jedi.'' And that's what Jedi do.
* Mace's "hostage situation" to resolve the situation with Depa. He knows that no matter how far she's Fallen, there's still one hostage she won't harm: [[spoiler: ''Himself.'']] As it turns out, he's right!
* Despite everything, Mace shows an incredible amount of faith and trust in Nick--very possibly the first person to do so. And Nick never lets him down.
