* In the season 5 episode "Control", Sean's mother, after showing total apathy to his kidney cancer and at one point showing more concern over his brother's discolored ''bowel movement'', one night finally confides that she too battled cancer and is simply convinced that if she can beat it, he can too.

* Having had a rocky relationship with his son so far, Chief Reilly agrees to attend Peter's wedding. When asked about it by Lou, Jerry admits that he's not okay with it, but it's important to him that Peter believes that he is. Jerry later gives a wonderful speech at the ceremony and leaves on good terms with Peter, his love for his son having finally overridden his prejudices. [[spoiler: Also becomes a TearJerker when Jerry shoots himself at the end of the episode, but still heartwarming in the bittersweet sense that he valued reconciling with Peter so much before taking his own life.]]

* Tommy ducks out of a PD/FD hockey game when his post-traumatic stress catches up to him and suddenly brings him to tears. One of the cops, Collins, finds him in the locker room. The two just engaged in a fistfight on the ice, so you would expect more vitriol. Instead, Collins reveals that he too is dealing with SurvivorGuilt from 9/11, and that sometimes he can only cope by drinking himself into a coma. This moment of kindness and understanding of shared trauma catches Tommy off guard, but it also clearly means a lot to him.
