You would expect someone of his age who goes through a living hell full of torture, death, and suffering to either [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope lose their ideals]] or [[BreakTheCutie go mad]]. But no matter what he sees or how people act around him, Shu refuses to give in to deprevity and cynicism, and even if he directly is helpless to change things, his very idealism influences others to be better and he lives up to them until the end of the series. [[spoiler:Even after his kendo stick shatters, he still keeps up with his attitude as show during his goobye to Sara and the trip back to his world]]
