* Despite being a FishOutOfWater in Kings Row, it's rather heartwarming to see Nicholas finally adapt to his new school and earn the respect of his peers through hard work and determination.
* When Coach Williams is given the difficult choice of selecting either Nicholas or Eugene for the fencing team's reserve spot, Nicholas comes in and willingly agrees to give up his place for Eugene because he knows just how hard he worked over the years to finally make it.
** Coach Williams' response to this also counts. While initially berating him for willing to give up, she also [[SoProudOfYou praises his integrity]] and reveals that Eugene went to her beforehand to do the same believing that Nicholas needed it far more for his scholarship.
