** He needed to set things up so Syrus — who at this point is prone to messing up under pressure — would combo his cards correctly. If Jaden had destroyed Defense Wall, he'd risk Syrus misunderstanding Jaden's plan and misplaying by trying to destroy Gate Guardian with Drillroid instead of Shield Crush. Since the anime version of Drillroid destroys the monster after damage calculation (ergo, you still take damage if the other monster's DEF is higher), this would have cost them the duel. Jaden purposely set things up so that Syrus would only be able to use Drillroid on Defense Wall, thus requiring him to save Shield Crush for Gate Guardian.

** Right before that play, Jaden took damage from Ectoplasmer and found that half his body had started phasing in and out of reality. Logically, his first thought was to destroy the card he blamed for his immediate injury. And from a gaming perspective, there were already some monsters at that time that could activate effects from the hand. If Jaden hadn't used Clay Wrap, attacked with Rampart Blaster, and Jinzo turned out to have Kuriboh or something, Jaden wouldn't win on that turn, but would still be forced to Tribute Rampart Blaster at the End Phase, which would guarantee his loss the following turn.

** The Duel Spirits were almost definitely also affected. Besides all the new Evil Hero cards, you can see that even the basic Elemental Heroes he was fusing into them had changed their card art during his reign, implying they were corrupted too, just to a lesser degree. A flashback in episode 141 shows that Neos' card in particular was explicitly coated in some kind of dark power during this time.

** He couldn't do that, because Chazz had already ended his Battle Phase. Chthonian Blast was a Normal Spell instead of a Trap in the anime, so after Judai used Mirror Gate to switch Flame Wingman and Sparkman during Wingman's attack, Chazz had to go to Main Phase 2 to be able to activate Blast.
** As for why Chazz didn't just wait for Mirror Gate's effect to end and switch Flame Wingman back to his control, that card didn't work like that in the anime at first either — the control-switching was permanent. The End Phase reversal was added to the IRL card and not implemented in the show until later.

** Edo may have purposely chosen not to finish it that turn to prove a point. In the original translation, right before he attacks, he does say something about how if Judai really thinks he can change his destiny, then he can go ahead and try. Taken literally, that would mean he was leaving Judai with some Life Points remaining so that he could "go ahead and try" to turn things around, only to lose anyway. Of course, if that's the case, he made a terrible mistake since obviously Judai went on to win. And the more likely answer is that it was just a duel writing mistake.

** Trapper really wanted to get his hands on the Crystal Beasts, so, by all appearances, yes.
