Iori is smoking hot, so it's not a stretch to assume that even at 16 she'd dealt with unwanted advances for some time and thus automatically distrusts any guy who approaches her. In that situation, Ichitaka being TheStoic around her worked to his advantage – plus it's heavily implied that Teratani often put in good words for him – allowing her to see him as a non-threat.
